Cards lose Austin to college job

Posted by Darren Urban on February 11, 2010 – 12:29 pm

The Cardinals are looking for another assistant coach now that Teryl Austin has accepted a job at the University of Florida, a development first reported by Mike Jurecki that I have since confirmed. The Cardinals could stay in-house by promoting assistant defensive backs coach Rick Courtright or coach Ken Whisenhunt could look elsewhere. I would guess Whisenhunt would like someone in place by the end of the month when the coaching staff heads to the scouting combine. That begins Feb. 24.

UPDATE: Florida is telling reporters nothing is official yet. Rivals.com’s Tom Deinhart is saying Florida is in the middle of interviewing a different person for the job today.

UPDATE II: Florida has made it official.

In Ken we trust. This may not be such a bad thing seeing how safteys are part of the DBs crew. One of the inconsistancy’s this year has been coverage and giving up the big plays. I would say our safteys hit hard, but what good is it hitting hard if that doesn’t create opportunities.

I think a fresh (outside) view of the Cardinals secondary is called for, and therefore hope the Cards look outside the organization to fill the position. Breakdowns in pass coverage at the most crucial times have been a recurring theme since Austin arrived with Whiz. DBs have come and gone, but the overall result hasn’t – mediocrity and more mediocrity.

    Darren-
Are there any good canidates out there for this position, by this I mean a seasoned veteren backs coach that can teach our backs not to give up so many passing yards per game(not always going after the pick 6) and how to tackle like we were taught in pop warner? I am not seasoned on Rick so I have no idea how his past has been but I definatley think we need to get that care of especially with our now young cb’s.

I would assume Whiz knew Austin was looking at the Florida job and already had in mind what he was going to do if Teryl left.

Austin left for a promotion and a resume builder so we can only wish him well with the Gators plus he can feed coach Whiz inside info on future draft picks from a program producing many NFL players so this is good, but we need a DB coach and I have just made you GM.

Darren who are the 5 guys you bring in to interview for our DB coach?
    Thanks

must admit that i did not know who austin was until yesterday. not sure why someone would want to coach at college rather than the nfl, especially at arizona. having said that, i agree with the other people who commented that our secondary needs to play much better, especially in the big games. we need to find a coach who can improve our secondary.

I don’t pretend to know who candidates for a DB job would be. When you start talking coordinators, maybe there is an idea. But for that job, it could be anyone Whisenhunt or Bill Davis has had a relationship with at some point, or a guy someone knows who has a relationship with Whiz. I will say I would be surprised if something doesn’t happen quickly, however.

Don’t discount the idea that any coach would want job security, and with the current labor unrest possible in the NFL in 2011, that is a concern. Besides, if Austin is working as a defensive coordinator, that’s a step up from being a defensive backs coach and it gives him solid experience if some NFL team might want to make him a DC down the road. Maybe Austin would like to be a college head coach some day. There are lots of potential reasons to make this move.

this could be a good thing the secondary is the only real problem for the cardinals that i see
other then the tight end and left tackle

Wow (or DUH) — didn’t know Austin was the Card’s DB coach for the past seven years. A holdover from the Denny Green era. Definitely time for a Whiz pick to fill the open position.

Teryl came in with Whisenhunt. It is Rick Courtright, the assistant DB coach, that came in under Denny.
