Cards tab Henderson for DB coach

Posted by Darren Urban on February 22, 2010 – 10:48 am

UPDATE: It’s official. Donnie Henderson is the new defensive backs coach, replacing Teryl Austin.

I have yet to hear anything official, but the National Football Post — reporter Brad Biggs was the one to break that then-Cards’ DB coach Teryl Austin was interviewing with the University of Florida — is reporting the Cardinals are going to hire Donnie Henderson to replace Austin. Henderson was out of the NFL in 2009, but has served as defensive coordinator with the Lions and Jets and was the Ravens’ defensive backs coach when Baltimore won the Super Bowl. I remember Henderson as an assistant at Arizona State back in the early 1990s.

Hey Darren, that report says the team is expected to release Rolle. I though they were talking restructuring his deal. Is this just a way to save that roster bonus? Seems like he would get that money back anyways with a new deal

    Branfon –

Their report about Rolle was based on this item I wrote.

OK. Hey, it can’t get any worse than it was last year. It’s not like the talent isn’t here, McFadden not withstanding. Knowing that he was with the Ravens during a period when their defense was so dominant is encouraging.

based on what i read about henderson it sounds as though this could be a very good pick to replace austin. henderson’s time in new york and baltimore enabled those teams to have some of the top ranked d’s against the pass year in and year out. now we just need to resign ware and rolle to give the guy more to work with in 2010. if rolle does leave i think the cards need to look at addressing safety at least by the 3rd round like last year. ware definitely needs to resigned no matter how it turns out with rolle. darren i imagine you’ll be together an article on henderson soon or would i be mistaken? thanks for the info as always.

Given the combine this week, a Henderson story will probably be on the back burner for now.

As you know, I’ve been very critical of the defensive coaching. From what I’ve read, this could be a tremendous move for the Cards. Henderson has a reputation for being an aggressive “fiery coach” able to relate well to players, but quick to get in a players face if they don’t perform. He had a good start with the Ravens in 1999 and quickly went from assistant DB coach to DB coach in 2000 where he stayed until they won the Super Bowl in 2003.
Then things get a little fuzzy. He went to the Jets as their DC and did well in 2004. After an off year, Herm Edwards was fired in 2005 and so was Henderson. Although Mangini kept the OC in what the New York press termed a “strange move”, because the OC Mike Heimerdinger stated publically he didn’t want to play for Mangini. We all know who well that worked out.

It’s unclear whether or not he interviewed with the Saints for the head coaching position. Old press clippings show that the Saints asked for permission to interview Henderson. It seems like he didn’t want to be the token Rooney Rule interviewee, despite the fact that while in New York Henderson repeatedly said his dream was to be a head coach in the NFL.

Henderson ended up as the DC for Detroit in 2007 only to be fired and replaced by Rod Marinellis’ son-in-law. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall during those coaches meetings. Talk about drama! And we all know how well that worked out!

In January 2008 Henderson was hired by the weasel Jack Del Rio for a “role to be defined later”. I couldn’t find any good press or blog on the subject but reading between the lines it sounded a little like bait and switch since the Jags needed a DC. Anyway Henderson ended up as the DB coach. It was not a good year for the Jags and despite Jack the snake Del Rio publically stating that there would be no coaching moves in the off season, something like 7 coaches were fired or left and Henderson was one of them. I found several quotes about how impossible it was for Henderson’s DBs to do well with the worst pass rush in the NFL, and Henderson was Jack’s scape-goat.

Henderson did defensive “volunteer” work for the California Redwoods of the UFL in 2009. Now there’s a story for you Darren. Did he just want a year away from the madness after Jacksonville, Detroit and New York, or did he just not get any good offers? Did Dennis Green, the Redwoods head coach, make a Cardinals connection?

All and all this move bodes well for suring up our secondary. This sounds like a man who wants to move to the top. He should be highly motivated and he’s at an age where he’s not going to get many more chances. Let’s wish him well and hope the Cards continue to make a series of smart moves like this in the coming 2 weeks.

Sounds like this could be a big move for the Cards. And now that I heard Darren Sharper might be available from the Saints.. with Rolle leaving… sounds like just what we need!

He does sound interesting and could be a nice upgrade for us.
GO Cards!! Kind of nice to be a fan of an organization where a coach comes to us now for a little stability ha ha ha. How many years have we all waited for this?

I see this as a great hire. Henderson sounds like the type of guy we need to push Toler and DRC and even Bill Davis. I would expect him to be the kind of guy to push hard for a great pass rush too.

This is the best news for the 2110 season for the cards, it will give us the best chance to win the divison again go coach Henderson.
