Here come the visits

Posted by Darren Urban on March 8, 2010 – 3:48 pm

Reports are now coming about multiple free-agent visits for the Cards. Fox Sports’s Alex Marvez reports that Browns offensive lineman Rex Hadnot is coming in Tuesday night, while ESPN’s Adam Schefter says Steelers defensive end Nick Eason and Chiefs offensive lineman Wade Smith will come in tonight. Again, none of the names are sexy and probably not even as starters. But it is about building depth on the lines.

Linebackers Larry Foote and Joey Porter are also reportedly going to visit later this week.

Depth is never a bad thing, we could always use more depth. The Larry Foote and Joey Porter scheduled meetings are what excites us as fans because they could plug in some big holes at ILB and OLB.

  8. By Eazy E on Mar 8, 2010 | Reply

Depth along the lines aren’t bad at all. Eason played with cleveland too, he should make us deeper if we get him. Hadnot is a good player and he might challenge for a starting job at guard. Smith is another good depth move on our o-line. Porter and Foote would be great additions. Now schedule visits with Bodden and try to get Jamal because he’s visiting the saints and broncos. Maybe Kemoeatu, if we lose out on Jamal! I also hope the cards are waiting until Derek Anderson gets cut and signs him because he has a 7M roster bonus due on March 19th. They aint paying that. So good for the cards.

Any news on FA QB’s coming in? Have they contacted any guys? Id imagine with that extra 3rd rounder they can maybe take a gamble on taking a qb higher, but a vet backup is still needed. Batch? Bulger? Not really many out there.

    Hey Darren?

I see San Diego cut Jamal Williams loose. I know you probably get tired of being inundated with queries as to who you think the Cards might look at, and your opinion on this guy or that, but would it not be a good idea to try to take a look at the guy? He was pretty stout before he got hurt in 2009, but he’s probably healed up by now…

They will sign a veteran backup. But at this point, they are taking their time.

  16. By darrenurban on Mar 8, 2010 | Reply

    Dave —

Yes, many, many, many people are asking about Williams. If they are looking at him, it’s obvious they don’t consider him a priority, since so many other guys are coming in first and he’s visiting other spots. And I’m not sure, given his age and injuries, they are interested.

    Darren,
Joe that the Cards don’t have “big money” tied up with rolle/dansby/boldin,do you think they can start working with Dockett on an extenstion?
I know Rod Graves said those 4 players were part of the “core” last year or whenever, well now only Dockett is here……So I think it would restore ALOT of faith in cards fans and season ticket holders if the cards would pay 9-0 a top dt contract.Because if Dockett gets to his final year and Graves handles him like he handled the 3 guys who left Friday an he walks,I just don’t think I would know angry I would be.
    Thanks!

    Eazy E. –

I don’t agree with Derek Anderson because it is not good for the chemistry with Matt Lienart. Anderson career consist of QB controversy and we don’t need that here. Plus, he is coming from a losing team with a losing mentality which we just got out of. If a back up QB is required, then a rookie or veteran who can accept back-up QB label is the way to go.

I think we give Matt a real chance on becoming a NFL starting QB and after this year the question is still there then maybe a Vick will there available…he has one more year on his contract.

Do you know what’s going on with Rackers? He is listed as one of the top 25 FA on NFL.com and we cannot afford to lose Neil. Man when he is healthy there is no other place kicker in the NFL as physical as Rackers. There are truley 11 people on the field when he is kicking. That guy makes more tackles than the rest of Special Teams do. Do you think he will be back?

If Matt do not silence the non-believer this year, there a chance for panic just like the exodus last week. I believe Matt will do good…good enough to win the NFC West and with the NFC South / AFC West regular season match up well be fine. But if he doesn’t then I would rather take a chance on a QB who won some games (Vick) then one that haven’t (Andersen).

    Darren,
At the risk of being simple, I’d like to ask an obvious question – with all of the money we’re NOT paying Warner, Dansby, Boldin, and Rolle…shouldn’t we be able to afford something a little better than the guys on this list??? These guys in your report? You said it – not sexy at all! In keeping with that idea, we should be going after Beyonce or Carrie Underwood. Instead, we’re going after Sandra Bullock! See what I’m sayin??? Can you give me an idea of what their financial situation is as a result of these departures??? Surely, they must have more right now than they did a week ago…yes?

PS – And please don’t miss that perfect set-up I gave you to come back with that classic line from Airplane “And don’t call me Shirley!”

    Hey D-Urb,

Any mention of Kirk Morrison? The guy is a beast at ILB, and the Raiders only tendered him with a 3rd rounder. Any possibility the Cards dump their third (keeping the Raven’s third, the better pick, as they did with Rhodes and the 4th) for a shot at Morrison? I have read Docket mini-campaigning for him, and I know via Twitter he was courtside at a Suns game and also went to LoLo’s this weekend.

    Thoughts?

    Dre-

Did you forget that Anderson took the browns to a 10-6 record in 07? That’s like going undefeated for the dire straights that franchise has lol. And he would have kept his starting job if his recievers would hang on to the ball, the Cleveland recievers (Mainly Braylon Edwards who’d catched these ridiculous plays, and drop the balls that were right between the numbers) dropped so many balls in 08 when he lost his starting job. I think Anderson would be good with the talent Arizona has at WR, along with the reemergance of the AZ running game. So if Leinart does Struggle I do think Anderson could get it done. And for those who think Vick would be good I say it’d just be like bringing in a Matt Leinart that can run lol. Both Left Handed, low throwing, laser type passers.

Right now after Dansby left, the Cards can sign two guys for first-year salaries of $5.7 million and as many as they want at $3.7M. The only one I can see getting at least $3.7 M is Porter, and even he is a longshot for that money. The rule won’t be an issue.

    Dre-

Well Dre, Matt doesn’t deserve an all-out ”I’m The Starter” type ordeal. He needs that guy that can beat him out. Whiz said he wants competition. If you bring in a bulger, delhomme, etc. That’s not competition at all. Plus Derek being on a bad team and having a losing mentality, can you name a decent wr or te on their team? He has a horrible supporting cast, NO WEAPONS!! Their O-Line was the only thing decent about them offensively. Derek struggled because of no supporting cast. When he had weapons(Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow Jr.), he threw 29 tds and went to the pro bowl. Brady Quinn was trash because he doesn’t ever look downfield, Derek has a big arm and at least tries to make plays even with their sorry WRs and TEs.

  53. By alex u on Mar 8, 2010 | Reply

i think Gabe Watson played well this year and maybe good enough to start but, a good NT for the draft would be Jared Odrick out of Penn, he would be an amazing pick especially if we pick-up Foote and Porter, then i would have think no doubt we can be a top 10 defense for sure but, if we re-sign Robinson, i would take Jerry Huges out of Texas-Christian, would be awesome aswell and i would assume Hayes would move back to the NO.3 LB which is amazing depth. I think we need to adress LT, and i don’t know much about Rex Hadnot, i know he’s a Guard and started right away for Cleveland but, can he play LT maybe?

  55. By DRC#1FAN on Mar 9, 2010 | Reply

I play a lot of madden. As I am sure all of you do. And, this is the best way to manage a team and win year after year. You sign a lot of guys at the mid range affordable level and give someone the chance to rise to the occasion. Then trade or release them when they have value. Rolle and Dansby are not as good as they are payed now, but they were that good at least enough times to make an awesome highlight reel, right? I just hope we draft defense, but not as much as the patriots last year, lol.

    Darren,
Thanks for the reply. I hear you, but at the same time, that’s kinda my point! As always, I think in very simple terms. But why let all of these guys leave and end up with money to spend only to find there’s no one worth spending it on??? OK, Warner retired, and no amount of money was going to change that. Dansby wanted crazy money that he might not even be worth. OK, fine. I think Boldin wanted out and maybe no amount was going to keep him here. OK. I’m NOT ok with losing him but it was inevitable. But Rolle’s departure was NOT inevitable and that’s the one that really gets my goat. I think they would have been better served by doing what they needed to do BEFORE he was released because as far as I’m concerned, they lost him the moment he became available on the open market. Once that happened, he was NOT returning to the Cardinals. It didn’t need to happen. I think they could have kept a big playmaker who is just entering his prime years and already familiar with this defense here without going overboard. They might spend less for Rhodes ( must admit, I don’t really know that for sure ) but are they a better team for it? Doesn’t look like it to me.

  69. By fitzis11red on Mar 9, 2010 | Reply

Hey Darren. I have been a Cardinal fan since ’88 and proud of it. Because so many of us have put up with futiity for so many years it is awe inspiring to see players actually want to be here. Remember Montana? We were a stepping stone to K.C. I say this because Porter has expressed interest in playing here and that would have been nothing but wishful thinking if we had not gone to the Super Bowl in’08. So my question is, in your expertise and opinion, what is the realistic probability that Porter will sign with us? Take care.

  70. By darrenurban on Mar 9, 2010 | Reply

    Scott H —

Here’s where we disagree, though. I don’t think Rolle is worth what he got. I don’t think the Cards should have offered him as much as they did (even though he turned it down). I think throwing your salary structure out of whack (by giving him more that Wilson) is a mistake. I think paying your safeties that much combined would be a mistake.

If you think Rolle was going to accept an extension from say, mid-season on until free agency, you are being naive. If you think they should have extended him before the season, well, he was average as a safety in 2008; what if you committed big money to him and then he flamed out?

You and I disagree with Rolle too. You see him as this big playmaker. I think Antrel is good, but to me, Ed Reed is a playmaker. Rolle isn’t there yet and I’m not sure he gets there.

Thanks, darren. As always, you are wise and informative in equal measure. In my last post ( wondering why they let so many key players leave only to end up with more salary cap room and no one special to spend it on ), I meant to ask about Darren Sharper. Basically, he’s available…yes? Watching how he played last season for the Saints, he looks like he’s got plenty left to me. Was he even a consideration for the Cardinals at any point? I’m assuming there’s no way he is now after the trade for Rhodes…
