Anticipating practice
Posted by on August 4, 2011 – 12:13 pmIt looks like the CBA will be done in time for the Cards to have their full team practice today. Remember, an astounding 24 guys have been forced to sit at this point. Coach Ken Whisenhunt did say he would be willing to move practice a little later if the ratification was slow to happen, just to get practice in, but I’m not sure that will be necessary.
UPDATE: Player rep Jay Feely just tweeted out the Cards approved the CBA. Waiting for the rest of the league, but “practice will happen.”
Whisenhunt also said QB Kevin Kolb will definitely play in the preseason opener in Oakland despite short practice time. Today, Whiz said it was a “good question” what he’d be looking for from Kolb, but he stressed he’d be realistic with the whole team.
“I know at times it’s going to be ugly,” Whisenhunt said. “But I know at times guys will make plays.”
– Whiz said he wasn’t sure how much Patrick Peterson would be involved in the return game, but it sounds like he will get in there some. “He’s a natural,” Whisenhunt said.
– The first unit will get extra reps once they practice. It’s necessary given the way things have gone, and it will take reps away from some of the young guys trying to make an impression.

Darren,
Given that everything is a mess, do you think either brother (campbell or Skelton) stand much of a chance? Skelton seems to be the smallest posibility, having to beat out Dray and Spach for a spot. Thoughts?

Darren, there are recent reports saying that WR Jericho Cotchery could be released from the jets. If that does happen, what are your opinions on whether or not the cardinals could be interested in possibly going after him? I’m really hot on Braylon Edwards but it seems the cards have somewhat lost a bit of interest in him.

RE: Brothers
I’d actually rank Skelton’s chances higher than Campbell’s. But you are right, it’s going to be tough.

RE: Cotchery
As I have been saying, they’ll look at everyone. If the market is right, I could see that, but they aren’t pursuing a WR per se right now.

they traded a lot for kolb and they dont even know what exactly they want from him?

I have no idea what that means.

so darren,I know that the cardinals are looking on some widereciever options. But I still dont believe we have solved the Cornerback position, do you believe that Marshall is the guy, or will the cards look into that in free agency? or possibly a rookie?

So if the Cards are today $14 mil under the cap…that number includes this year’s cap number for Larry…so really they could be around $21-$22 mil under?

RE: CB
I think the Cards are comfortable at CB, at least the top three right now.

RE: Cap
Not sure why you would take Larry’s number out. Whatever his deal, his cap number is going to take a chunk of it, even if he extends.

Darren,
should we expect more than one quarter from Kolb in the first preseason game given the questions with protection?

RE: Kolb playing
I don’t know what to expect. I don’t think the decision is going to be made because of protection, however.

Darren,
You have said that Braylon’s chances of coming here are less likely than they were a couple of days ago. If the cardinals do end up going after another wide reciever to compliment larry, do you think we might try to go after derrick Mason?
By D on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
my polish cap math…probably of the remaining cap amount, $15-$17mil will go to Larry..so I can see why they are not spending any more

Darren,
Are the cardinals going after any other free agents besides widee receivers? Maybe some line backers like Crowder or Tatupu?
By mad4az on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
Hey Darren, do you think the cards should bring in ot jared gaither? We’re pretty thin at ot plus competition can’t hurt? IT probably only will take a 1yr deal since he’s come off an injury, but if he’s healthy its a definite upgrade at the position. Gaither when healthy is better than both our starters.
By salvador silva on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
so that means all free agents can practice today too?
By cards>niners on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
not signing another wide receiver would be an unacceptable mistake, mark my words.
By modavaysean on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
Braylon just signed with the 49ers . That leaves Floyd and Cotchery as the only viable WR’s left . I also hear Floyd is weighing between the Eagles and the Ravens . Ya i know you said we aren’t looking for a WR but we should be .

Darren-
I think “D” meant that in regards to signing Larry to a longer contract, we would then use whatever he currently costs against the cap plus some of the remaining $14 Million. In other words, we wouldn’t have to save that full $14 Million to renew Fitz, and still have some left over for a free agent or two…
By Scott H on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
Well, there’a a real nice one-two punch for Cardinal fans….Braylon Edwards will NOT be a Cardinal but he WILL now play against us twice this year for the 49ers. I’ll reserve further comment until I see where Floyd lands, but…we already lost out on the best player still available at a position of great need. And that just feels all too typical…
By Steve on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
Darren: Why the heck did the Bidwills just stand there and watch Edwards sign with SF for 1 yr and 3.5 mill after several of our players were clamoring for him to come here ? Mgmt could have easily matched that and supposedly we were in constant touch with Ben Dogra, his agent, the whole time. Whisenhunt was on Jim Rhome the other day saying that Edwards off field issues were not eliminating the Cards interest in him. What happened in your opinion???
By Steve on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
We have Larry Fitzgerald and no real #2 receiver to work with……thats just great.

Edwards is a 49er! Hope we gp after Floyd!!

Jerricho Cotchery and Malcom Floyd are still available, what are the chances we grab one of them?

Information to all Cards fans, Braylon Edwards signs with 49ers. one year contract
By cactus jeff on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
I think all the sports writers are wrong. Ranking Philly 1, Cards 2 in free agency is ridiculous, the 49ers are doing just as well. Here is CBS free agency rankings (Heap is not ranked)
CARDS 49ERS
Colledge 51 Edwards 10
Marshall 63 McDonald 46
Bradley 70 Goodwin 53
Lutui 73 Smith 70
Get Floyd, different story.

Looking at the cardinals new O line what do you think they will do better this year, Run blocking or pass blocking ?
By PACardsfan on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
Darren, any word if the Cardinals may go after Steve Smith (NYG)? since Edwards got picked up by the 49ers? I saw where they are interested in Floyd, but I think Smith would fit too. Also, read somewhere that Stephen Williams is a FA. Anyword on resigning him too? He looked ok filling in last season. Would like to see Bryant Johnson return since the lions released him, but know that’s highly unlikely.
By shannon robinson on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
The roster is complete. Now we go to Camp and the fight for 53 is on. I don’t expect any more major additions as competition is intense at every position. Good job Mr. Graves.

darren, PLEASE post the kolb press conference and kolb throwing the ball for us fans who work during the week and cant make it up to flagstaff!

darren when will you have video coverage of the practice for us?
By Scott H on Aug 4, 2011 | Reply
…and NFL.com is now reporting that the RAVENS appear to be the favorite to land Floyd. IF that happens, this is a total strike-out for the Cardinals.
Strike One – Losing Breaston
Strike Two – Swing and a miss on Edwards
Strike Three – Swing and a miss on Floyd

Maybe it didn’t eliminate their interest, but that interest had a price given the baggage. Guessing that was too much as a combination.

Looks like Floyd will sign with Ravens and we miss the chance of having any dominace on the outside, larry will have to work harder to get open and Kolb will have to make King and heap his safety blankets and main targets now, we may loose the best receiver in the game if he does not get the ball enough, what is wrong with who is negociating for us its a simple pitch ,come to Cards and have a chance in playoffs every year considering our division, if we get another outside threat we will win this division easily, but now we have defend Edwards twice this season, now all thats left is what we have already or over rated Steve Smith.

hay Darren Im not conplainning , the cards have done a good job in free agency, look at my previous post and tell me what you think ?
