Housler on call with Heap, Spach out

Posted by Darren Urban on August 19, 2011 – 3:59 pm

Tight ends Todd Heap (thumb) and Stephen Spach (calf) are sitting out tonight’s game in Green Bay. Heap would’ve played if this was a regular-season game, but there is no reason to rush it. That opens the door for more playing time for rookie Rob Housler (as well as Jim Dray, fighting to make the roster). Housler did have a touchdown catch last week, so he was of to a good start.

The others sitting out are guard Floyd “Pork Chop” Womack (shoulder) and, of course, safety Adrian Wilson (biceps) and cornerback Michael Adams (knee). Tackle D.J. Young, who missed some practice time with a knee issue, was not ruled out.

Darren, kind of an off topic question, but with Jefferson, Peterson, Toler, and Marshall where do you see Mike Adams fitting?

Is Spach improving? See him practicing at the next practice? I like his game and I like his toughness. Not sure why so many people don’t like him, clearly the coaches see what a handful of the rest of us do. He’s consistent which is good in and of itself. Anyway, how’s his improvement coming along?

How many games do you see Housler playing in this season? If they keep 4 TE’s do you see them leaving 2 or 3 inactive on game day?

    RE: Adams

They could keep him as a fifth CB and special teams.

    RE: Spach/Housler

I think they know what they have in Spach. As for Housler games, tough to know right now. I would expect at least three tight ends active on most game days.

Might we see the Skelton brothers in at the same time?

    Darren,
Watching the pregame show on TV, Heap is in uniform, just curious if he is officially out, or is he going to play?

    RE: Skelton

Well, since Stephen Skelton didn’t even get in the game last week, I think his first goal is just to get some time, period.

We were told he won’t play. Again, he would in the regular season. It doesn’t shock me that he’d put the uniform on.

Peterson is looking better in coverage just needs to pay more attention to the ball coming in. Kolb looked good for the most part with the exception of 2 things; Most of his completions are comeback routes, i think he needs to press the seam once in a while and throw some more challenging completions; and we need to get kolb a darn TD under his belt, the no TD/ high completion percentage is something that haunted leinart and im afraid if he goes a third game without a TD then the comparisons might begin.

    Darren,
After getting a better look at Housler I ask myself why the coaches don’t convert him to a WR? His blocks are not good and his man made the tackle multiple times and he doesn’t look like he even tries very hard at it. Why not move him to WR and utilize his tall/thin frame and speed instead of forcing something like learning to block as well as a TE should? Have you heard anything from coaches about this or am I the only one who feels this way? No doubt he has receiving talent and he’s quick but he doesn’t look like a TE to me. Thoughts?

    Thanks

What a shame about running back williams. i hope schofield has some time to spend with him having gone through similar experience.

I think it’s early in his development. His frame says tight end to me.
