Cards go with two QBs; Taylor, Adams inactive

Posted by Darren Urban on September 11, 2011 – 11:45 am

The Cardinals will go with two active quarterbacks today, with John Skelton (ankle) inactive and Rich Bartel as the No. 2 behind Kevin Kolb. New running back Chester Taylor will also be inactive, after just having a few days of practice with his new team, meaning Alfonso Smith will be the third back behind Beanie Wells and LaRod Stephens-Howling. Stephen Williams is inactive too, letting rookie DeMarco Sampson his first shot at a regular season game at receiver.

Cornerback Michael Adams (knee) isn’t ready yet either, opening the door for new acquisition Crezdon Butler.

The new rule is that teams only have to have seven inactives. There is no such thing as a “third quarterback” anymore. It gives teams a chance to have an extra player available on Sundays — but it also means, if you don’t make a third QB active, a third QB can’t play.

The other inactives:

  • CB Korey Lindsey
  • T D’Anthony Batiste
  • TE Jim Dray (pectoral injury)

UPDATE: As expected, the Panthers have QB Jimmy Clausen inactive, so Derek Anderson is Cam Newton’s backup.

    What’s up with Williams?
Injury or is Sampson the better option?

Is Stephen Williams hurt? If not any insight as to why the left him inactive and why sampson got the nod over him?

    RE: Willams/Sampson

Williams is not hurt. Sampson is apparently just head of him on the depth chart.

I really cannot believe how the NFL have continued to baby the quarterbacks. I understand they are the faces of the league but there is no way the roughing the passer call just before half on Cam Newton was roughing. The defender barely hit him and didn’t even knock him down. NFL has to let some of this go and let real football return or it will become arena football CRAP

I thought we brought Kolb in to get Fitz the ball, all im seeing is the same play Anderson provided us last year, man we miss DRC

Patrick Peterson needs to learn how to cover and we need to stop getting these damn penalties!!

WOW. Cam Newton has a future ahead of him. That being said, Kevin Kolb was magnificent. I could explain why but I am speechless, he really outplayed my expectations and we wouldve won that game by a couple more td’s if it werent for dumb penalties. Doucet played out of his mind and i think he is obviously the #2 guy at this point. DARREN- Please give us an update on Darryl Washington, he was everywhere today getting sacks, 2 interceptions (1 was wrongfully negated) and getting tackles with great closing speed. Our defense needs him. PP actually was pretty good in coverage against steve smith, getting his hand in the way on the td catch, smith is just that good. Our defense played well and I think if we continue to progress than we have a legitimate shot this year. Not to mention we get to go up against alex smith, tavaris jackson, colt mccoy, rex grossman and andy dalton. So if we can just win the favorable qb matchups we already have 8 wins, then we just have to nab a couple from teams like the giants, rams, vikings and cowboys. Im excited.

we need some body who can cover because patrick peterson can’t! over 400 yds passing to cam newton is absolutely ridiculous! i know we won today but if we can’t cover better than this in the future we are in serious trouble even in a weak division!

now the question is, is Horton still exited with where his defense is at?

Nice win for the Cardinals. Seems like the Panthers have had their number in recent years ( except 2008 in playoffs! ) and it wasn’t easy today, either. But they found a way to win in a game where they could easily found a way to lose. Nice debut for Kolb. I truly feel he is the guy they needed to have at QB. That he could throw for 300-plus and a couple of scores with no INT’s is pretty impressive considering the off-season was so abbreviated. Nice return for Peterson as well! But he better stop the damn posing until he gets in the end zone from now on!

Seems fitting that the Cardinals win the game but the story of the game is Cam Newton and his performance…hey, ya know what? Who cares? Let him be the story of the week, player of the week, whatever. I’ll take the WIN!

Love the improvement of our pass rush today, but there is still work to be done with our secondary. I have to remind myself that our CB’s are rookies. Go Cards!! Great win today.

mark you think cam newton is that good real real real 400 passing yards 2td passes if he do the same thing against green bay next week than he might be but he rip us up pretty good to be a rookie thats why i say we need better def really cbs it was to easy for him to throw the ball today i just keep it real with myself and you should try to do the same

what happened to stewart bradley he didnt play in the game?

  18. By KurtM on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

IG – DRC was nothing special yes he did get a pick here and there but we play 16 games he had what 3 INT last year thats pretty weak the man couldn’t tackle a new born baby. What we got in his return was waaaaaay bigger AP is gonna fill his size 2 shoe easily give em time. Kolb is the answer we needed had some bad plays today but will grow with the rest of the offense I like this team and what Wiz has done with it GOOOOO CARDS!!!!!!

    RE: Bradley

Good question. I was surprised he didn’t play more. He did appear briefly.

Was not as close as the score made it look, but I guess that’s the reason we have a scoreboard and not judges that award points!!

Regarding some of the above comments, I hope some of you boys were drunk when you wrote those comments, or you were shortchanged by whatever passed for an English teacher at the refugee camp that you were apparently raised in.

You ARE kidding, right? I’m giving you a chance to save yourself from looking like a total idiot, here…Kolb puts up 300-plus with 2 scores and ZERO INT’s and all you can say is “I thought we brought Kolb here to get the ball ti Fitz” and “all I am seeing is the same play DA gave us last year.” Well, genius, how ’bout this – maybe they brought him here to win football games. He WILL get the ball to Fitz plenty this year. But if he gets the ball to everyone else who can make plays for this team, then we will be better as a team. I know there are advanced concepts, but try to keep up, please. And if you think you saw this same play from DA last year, then please tell me which games you are talking about. Because I missed them all. Perhaps you were playing Madden and just thought they were real games???
