The Cardinals will go with two active quarterbacks today, with John Skelton (ankle) inactive and Rich Bartel as the No. 2 behind Kevin Kolb. New running back Chester Taylor will also be inactive, after just having a few days of practice with his new team, meaning Alfonso Smith will be the third back behind Beanie Wells and LaRod Stephens-Howling. Stephen Williams is inactive too, letting rookie DeMarco Sampson his first shot at a regular season game at receiver.
Cornerback Michael Adams (knee) isn’t ready yet either, opening the door for new acquisition Crezdon Butler.
The new rule is that teams only have to have seven inactives. There is no such thing as a “third quarterback” anymore. It gives teams a chance to have an extra player available on Sundays — but it also means, if you don’t make a third QB active, a third QB can’t play.
The other inactives:
- CB Korey Lindsey
- T D’Anthony Batiste
- TE Jim Dray (pectoral injury)
UPDATE: As expected, the Panthers have QB Jimmy Clausen inactive, so Derek Anderson is Cam Newton’s backup.
