Officially, Cards to spend practice week in K.C.

Posted by Darren Urban on June 28, 2012 – 2:31 pm

The speculation has come true: The Cardinals will indeed practice against the Kansas City Chiefs the week of Aug. 6, in between the Hall of Fame game against the Saints Aug. 5 and the preseason game in Kansas City Aug. 10. That was confirmed Thursday. The workouts will be at the Chiefs’ training camp home of Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo.

“There are many benefits to this arrangement and we appreciate Coach (Romeo) Crennel and the Chiefs working to make this happen,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said.  “Logistically it makes a lot of sense since we play Sunday night in Canton and then Friday night at Kansas City but I’ve always found there’s also great value in getting work against another team in a setting like this. We’re looking forward to it.”

The actual dates and times of the combined practices are still to be determined.

“Training camp is about us continuing our development and evaluating our players,” Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said. “We are very excited to be hosting another NFL team for competitive practices. This will give us another opportunity to further evaluate our team under a different set of circumstances before we get into our preseason schedule.”

The move just made sense. The Cards would have had to fly home in the dead of night after the Hall of Fame game and trek up to Flagstaff the next afternoon for what would have amounted to two days of work before driving back down to fly out for the Chiefs game. Going right to Kansas City made sense, much like the Cards’ trip to Nashville back in 2010.

“We could not be happier to host two NFL franchises this year at Missouri Western,” said Missouri Western State University athletics director Kurt McGuffin. “There is a buzz in the air about camp this summer, and with the addition of the Cardinals, the interest is elevated around St. Joseph and beyond. We would like to thank the Chiefs for bringing us this opportunity.”

The Cardinals’ full training camp schedule has yet to be released, but it is expected out very soon now that the details of the Kansas City week have been finalized.

That is so smart of coach Whiz, practicing with the chiefs. For one reason he can ask the Chiefs coaching staff which QB looks good in there point of view. I know he’ll make the final decision with his coaching staff but a little input from someone he has respect for doesn’t hurt anyone.

This is great! Love it that our players will get to scrimmage with an AFC team in a real time setting prior to preseason plus the HOF Game with the Saints. The more exposure our new players get before regular season the better prepared we will be. I remember their being a questioned raised previously as to whether the HOF game would count as one of the full dress practices allowed by the CBA. How will this practice with the Chiefs effect the number of full practices we are allowed in Flagstaff or will it? Great job Coach Whiz…I’m sooo excited and am getting a very good feeling about this being our year! GO CARDS!

I don’t think that Whisenhunt will be hitting up their staff for a QB evaluation, BIG RED.

This should be interesting. Being able to test our defense against one of our former card WR Steve Breaston. Romeo Crennel and Ray Horton are probably the best defensive minded coaches around. I expect that Darren will post some videos of the practices with KC. I can’t wait to see if our OL improved and I definitely want to see how Skelton does against a aggressive defense in Kansas City. The LBs of KC are amazing and their DBs are phenomenal. If Skelton can get through the DBs of the Chiefs, he should be ready for this upcoming NFL season. Since there was the Lockout last year, our QBs were not able to improve as much. Kolb could have easily brought us to the playoffs if he didn’t fumble the ball so much. In MIN last year, Kolb fumbled about 4times which allowed the Vikings to score TDs on 4 plays. As you can see after that, there were no touchdowns and just like 1 or 3 field goals. In Baltimore, we took a 24-6 lead into the half and Kolb couldn’t develop anything in the end and our team lost 27-30. In Seattle, we were leading throughout the game until we missed 2 field goals and lost 13-10. In NY, we had a chance to win the game until a fumble was upheld and I think we lost 27-24. In Washington, Kolb through an interception when we were close to the end zone (London Fletcher intercepted) and Chansi Stuckey fumbled the ball and we lost 22-21. Our team could have easily been 12-4. The only mistake that happened with Skelton at the helm was that Doucet tripped in Cincinnati and he struggled at SF . We didn’t take our schedule to our advantage last season. We need Skelton to be our starter because he is young, tall, and has a strong arm. His Accuracy was definitely better than his rookie year and he has a chance to be one of the elite QBs in the NFL. Kolb knows he hasn’t done well last season and he knows that he can do better. Kolb has been amazing at times but when he is under pressure, he can’t handle the ball and he throws interceptions. Look at Skelton and Kolb, the competition is tight but I believe Whiz will favor the young strong armed QB over the Philadelphia acquisition. If Skelton doesn’t win the competition, Whiz might struggle this season. But who knows, either QB can be successful and either can struggle but at the end of the day, all of the Cards fans out there just wants a franchise QB that can win games and can take us to a Super Bowl for a shot for our first NFL title as Super Bowl Champions. I’d love to see KC vs. ARI in the Super Bowl. It should be a classic game to watch.

    andy kw-
all those loses with kolb mainly had to do with the defense not playing will. not kolbs fault

Andy Kw – I realize we suffered a lot of close losses that could have been wins. Some people try and project that into a 10-6 or 11-5 season, forgetting that almost all our wins were very close also. On balance I think 8-8 was about right but the improvement on defence during the season and the work on the offence during the off-season make me optimistic about next year, rather than just hopeful, for the first time since 2009. I just don’t see us starting 1-6 this year.

peter in canada, you are right on. it’s easy to say that some of our losses could have been wins if not for this or that play. and just as easy to forget that some of our wins could just as easily have been losses. we could have been 4 and 12 last year if not for a handful of plays that went our way ( kick returns and missed field goal attempts). happy canada peter from nova scotia.

Johnnybluenose – A happy Canada Day to you also. My son went to St. Fx and really enjoyed the experience. So though I live in Toronto I have great regard for Nova Scotians.

@johnnybluenose, I’ve posted info in the Fans Message Boards/Birds Nest section regarding the NY Jets/Dec 2nd game. I also want to go and hopefully sit with some other Cards fans, so much so that I’ve made a group ticket purchase directly from the Jets, sitting in Club Seats. If you are interested, send me a PM via the Fans Boards message system. Not trying to make any money, just enjoy the game with others in a safe, comfortable and good viewing area. VACARDSFAN is my msg board name.
