Beanie Wells has said a few times that he isn’t frustrated with his current status on the PUP list, that it was all part of the knee rehab he was going to go through in training camp. And he is likely going to return to practice next week, so he doesn’t have to wait much longer.
That won’t make this weekend’s trip to the Hall of Fame game and the Canton/Akron area any easier. Wells finally had a chance to play at home, and it won’t happen.
“It does suck because I’d like to play there for the first time since high school,” Wells said. “It is what it is. Circumstances are what they are.”
For Beanie, this is different than going to play in Cleveland or Cincinnati. When he played for Akron Garfield High School, he went against Canton GlenOak in a game at Fawcett Stadium in 2005, where the Cardinals and Saints play Sunday. (Beanie ran for 263 yards and five touchdowns in an overtime loss.) His mother lives just a five-minute bike ride away.
“I went there (to the Hall of Fame) as a kid all the time,” Wells said. “It was absolutely a fun thing to go to, to see all the monuments there.”
Beanie wanted to give a tour of his hometown to teammates, but that may not work out since the team is staying outside Cleveland about an hour away. Still, Wells was animated when talking about local eateries he grew up with.
“You have to try Swensen’s,” he said. “And Tiffany’s Bakery.”
