Choosing the best of 4 bad QBs is no way to run a team

It's better than going with the other three. I agree with some of what you've said about Kolb, but I can't disregard the fact that he made very significant strides after his first season here. If we look at Matt Schaub's first two years in Houston you'll notice a similar spike in his TD/INT ratio. Does he share some blame for how the OL looks? Some, but not all. Batiste, and at the time he was blocking for him, Massie, were a pair of turnstiles. I still maintain that outside of Fitz, we don't have a starter on our offense that would be one on the majority of teams in the league. Glaring lack of talent on the line, no run game to speak of (although I've always felt we don't use Wells the way we should), TE's, non-existent. Once Kolb went out we saw just how bad our overall talent level on that side of the ball really was. I'm nowhere near as convinced as you are that any of the guys you mentioned (Osweiler, Foles, Wilson, Weedon and Cousins) would be an upgrade with what we currently have in place. An upgrade over Skelton and Lindley? Absolutely, and to your point there's no doubt we should have placed more emphasis on it in past drafts. But if we're going to bank on an unknown rookie I'll feel much better about it with a QB I know can step in and win, as opposed to having the three stooges in charge of the huddle for another season, should the new kid in town succumb to the same issues his predecessors have.

Mike Ellingboe,

Choosing the best of 4 bad QBs is no way to run a team. Plus, we will be going with Skelton/Lindley/Hoyer at some point if we go with Kolb. I clean house, bring in someone who knows the system like Stanton and draft a QB.

Not sure why you feel there is no QBs in the draft? Take out Luck and RG3, and last year's draft is the same as this year. Geno Smith is a raw talent much like Tannehill was last year. Then you have guys like Oswater, Foles, Wilson, Weedon and Cousins, Remember, they were rated 3-4 th rounders due to flaws.

Would any of these guys give us more hope than Kolb? Heck yes.

As I put above, I am a Tyler Wilson fan. As Gil Brandt said, he expects him to go in the top 15 and compares him to Brett Farve. You don't see that on many boards (CBS Sports has him going #8 to Bills). Yes, as a rookie, he might be like Dalton or Locker, but to build a future thats what you need to do. Who knows, maybe he gives us a Russell Wilson season. I already know what Kolb will give us.

I agree with you on Glennon. I am of the same mind as Tom Landry. If they are inaccurate in college, they wont be accurate in the pros.

Protection; Yes Luck is special. So is Rodgers behind his bad line, Cutler behind his bad line,.Romo behind his bad line. heck we saw it with Warner and his questionable line. I personally think it goes hand in hand. I know Kolb made the line look worse than it was. Sure, I would improve the oline, but even with Joeckel and Womack, I still see Kolb holding the ball, staring at one wr, running out of the pocket instead of stepping up and not seeing the whole field.

A few things in response, but with all that's been written I don't want to write a novel. First, John asked what evidence we have to bring Kolb back. Anyone could see our offense was at least viable until he got hurt. What did it take us, over seven games to finally throw a TD pass to end the season? I never said he played well two seasons ago, the concern a lot had about the change in offense from WC to vertical proved to be valid, as did the reality of bringing in a new QB, with very few exceptions they too, take at least a couple of seasons to adapt to a new offense. Kolb's numbers improved significantly (here) unlike Skelton's, since his name was brought into it. Obviously his completion % would go down when taking into the account the offensive systems in place between here and Philly. Is he ideal in a vertical offense? No, but I conceded that. I agree he'd cost too much to keep, and his contract needs to be restructered but sad as it is, he is light years ahead of anyone else we have, and the draft isn't likely to produce anyone better.

On that note, I do have a major concern with Arians' comments about Indy's line vs ours. We don't have Andrew Luck, and we're not going to get anyone of his caliber anytime soon, if ever. Most of the 'magic' surrounding their season was due to his amazing play. Put anyone else (outside of the league's true elite) into that system and Indy is picking first again this year so let's not make it sound like some "rookie" who can overcome a bad line is the answer to our problems. He's a once in a decade QB, and anyone who knows football can see this draft has no one in it capable of tying his shoelace. I'm really hoping we don't, but the Glennon at #7 thing is gaining too much steam for my liking. Whisenhunt's biggest mistake was in not recognizing that it was Warner, not his system, that worked. It's beginning to sound like Arians may be making the same mistake with Luck.

Not saying not to draft a QB this year, obviously it's imperative that we come up with a good, long-term solution. But you go and jump the gun and cut Kolb, and that leaves us with Skelton, Lindley, Hoyer and an unknown rookie going forward. Does that sound good to anyone? I can't recall seeing an offense as inept as ours after Kolb went down, and I don't see many QB's in this draft ready to run a vertical offense at the next level. Try to find one, but don't pass on a blue-chip LT throwing darts at a board. Take what you're given, and build everything else up around the QB (like SF and Seattle did) and you'll find the search for a QB much easier.

D, you just given the perfect description of the perfect pocket passer who has taken D Stanton's place as the Lions third string QB, Kellen Moore from Boise State. Kellen was 50 and 3, the best in college history, 5 points away from being 53 and 0. He out played Colin Kaepernick all 3 times they played. And while, in last year's draft, the NFL scouts, including the Cardinals scouts, said he was the savvyest pocket passing QB but he was too small! At 6'1", he's 2 or 3 inches taller than Russell Wilson! His compltn % was over 75% his last year of college and never under 69 %. In 4 years he threw for 143 TDs and 21 ints.

Love the reasonable, thought out response. Keeps me glued to this site more than the "bidwells loose, need offence w/McNabb" answers.
However, this is a business and Kolb currently is making more than his value that he has presented. Will be interesting to see how this plays out this week with management and his agent in trying to restructure. He HAS to renegotiate or face being released, IMO.
