Toler headed to Indy and FA chatter

Posted by Darren Urban on March 12, 2013 – 2:48 pm

The Cardinals wanted to keep cornerback Greg Toler, but that didn’t happen. Toler agreed to a deal with the Colts Tuesday within 90 minutes of free agency, taking away a possible starter for the Cards and leaving them low at the position after cutting William Gay and with the team not expected to bring Michael Adams back. Only 2012 rookies Jamell Fleming and Justin Bethel joing Patrick Peterson on the roster for now.

The Cards are bringing in former Colts cornerback Jerraud Powers for a visit, according to multiple reports. Powers has started everyone of the 42 games in which he has played in the NFL, but that was over four seasons. He has never played 16 games in a season and finished the last three seasons on IR, although his experience trumps what Toler was bringing to the table.

Multiple other names have been linked to the Cards in these early hours of free agency, with varying reports of interest. Running back Rashard Mendenhall, who played for head coach Bruce Arians in Pittsburgh, has reportedly already scheduled a visit to come to Arizona while Denver also has interest. The Cards are talking to Pro Bowl special teamer/linebacker Lorenzo Alexander of the Redskins and receiver/special teamer Josh Cribbs of the Browns, too. One report had both “leaning” toward coming to Arizona but another report said the Patriots were ahead on the Cribbs front, so again, nothing is done until it’s done.

There is still talk about quarterback Drew Stanton too. I believe that, if Stanton lands in Arizona, that probably signals the end for Kevin Kolb in Arizona. If the team is keeping Brian Hoyer and drafting a quarterback — which they will at some point — signing Stanton and keeping Kolb doesn’t fit.

Finally, Kent Somers said that free agent linebacker Quentin Groves will visit Cleveland (and DC Ray Horton) but that the Cards are still trying to bring Groves back.

Toler is a big loss. When healthy he looked like are best CB, and I don’t think Powers is as good, but if he comes cheap as the number two and can shut it down great!!!

Rashard Mendenhall is a top 10 Rb for sure. The Steelers are falling apart. I dont understand why they benched him for fumbling, all thier backs fumbled because they ran way too much last year. With Arians Mendenhall will be a beast.

    Josh Cribbs???

I don’t get it. Arians says you fill need with FA. So we go after a punt and KO guy?

PP is fine with punts and with 2/3s of the KOs going into the endzone, not sure that is money well spent.

With Beanie, Williams, Kolb, Schofield, and a few others who are always hurt, I do not want to see the cards bringing in injury issues like Mendenhal and Powers. Guys dont get more healthy the longer they play.

Isn’t Lorenzo Alexander the same as Reggie Walker? Maybe Alexander is better on ST and Walker is a better LB, but virtually they are the same kind of player. So why are we targeting him??

I’m not a big FA guy and I get not going after the big names. Ashamoh, Reed, Jake Long, ect make sense not to overpay and get. But Cribbs, Mendenhal, Powers, and Alexander makes no sense to me at all.

Cardinals takin some big hits along with the big cuts, when are they going to start making solid moves? im tired of hearing about these average randoms comin in for visits, Rashard can be a solid back, but why bring in another injury prone RB when you just cut one and and still have an even more injury prone RB still on the roster?

This is getting kind of old watching the rest of our division establish dominance while we sit back and get ran over. We have the best wide reciever in the league but nobody who can get him the ball. Now our saving grace is Stanton? Our line is hurting and there are plenty of excellent lineman out there in FA and we do nothing, there are good defenders and we do nothing. The only good look we have is in Reggie Bush and looks like we will loose him to the Lions. After many years of being a die hard Cardinals fan in South Dakota I am getting sick of it!

    Everyone,

who says the Cardinals are being inactive in FA. Just because they’re not aquiring “big names” doesn’t mean they’re not doing their part. The FA’s have at least some say where they go.

Also, (Darren, this may be for you) if we have cap space left over, doesn’t that get added as extra to next season ala Denver had more money because of cap money from the year before to land Peyton Manning?

Maybe were holding onto some money because of who will be available next season that would require more cap money (like Anquan wanted and we don’t have this year).

Just thoughts. Please, be patient and let the Coaches and Front Office do their thing and remember, FA’s do have some say.

Oh and to those saying we never get any big names, we had Boldin, we had Warner, we had Wilson…we have Fitzgerald, we have Peterson, we have Docket. We have had and have now big names

    Darren

I understand the comment about only being 3 hours and 25 minutes into the new year but I think what most people are unhappy about is the fact that Arizona is involved with very few talks with some of these good players. I understand we don’t want the Ellerbe’s and Wallace’s but what about Long or Sean Smith. We have very large glaring holes and our best asset, our defense, is slowly getting worse. Just wondering if I am making any sense?

  29. By erik on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

You do a great job Darren. But you know us fans have been hearing rumors for 3 months now, so it feels like it has been longer than 3 hours. I also said I realize it may not dictate the way the season goes. But the perception, shared by many who post here, is that other teams are taking more positive steps. I know you get bombarded all day, and I appreciate what you do. I read your work everyday, thanks for all the info you give us.

Toler leaving stings. One of the three FA’s I thought we needed back. Not too worried about our approach yet b/c it’s too early to tell. I remember Richard Marshal being a ho-hum signing and that worked out well. I was excited about Todd Heap, Stewart Bradley and Kevin Kolb and none of that has panned. Name recognition doesn’t mean much is my point. I know I tend to not pay much attention to the rest of the league as I do the Cards so there are lots of great players I’ve never heard of. Especially at unheralded positions.

  33. By clssylssy on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

Alexander and Cribbs are good players but not exactly what we need on our “must have” list. We could have kept the Hypen for less money than I’m sure we’ll pay Cribbs and he is a better player, plus a fan favorite. The fans were promised that the focus would be on fixing the offense, beefing up the 0-line and upgrading the QB, etc, getting a good RB corp and maybe another TE or two (ours seem to be injured most of the time). We had a framework of a good team that just needed “tweeking” within limited cap space. What it seems we’re getting is a complete demo without the financial means to proceed with the original rennovation plan. I’m not surprised Toler was snapped up within minutes of the opening bell, seems like we could have prevented that and it’s going to cost us!

Toler tore his ACL at the BEGINNING of the 2011 season and didn’t have any off the field issues. As a result, Toler did very little for us last year which I predicted and called for him being cut before the 2012 season. Now, we’re about to replace one player with a torn ACL with another player that tore his even more recently or at the END of the 2011 season? Oh and like Toler, R. Mendenhall did very little last year BUT had off the field issues.

Josh Cribbs? Bad move! What’s he going to do get paid to watch the ball go over his head and out of the end zone? He won’t have 1 kick off return for a TD.

Well at least Reggie Bush is not coming here! I’m frustrated at the fact there has not been any talk about a vet. offfense lineman coming for a visit, but in all reality I am not too surprised about the frenzy thinking that our new coach sounds likes building through the draft.

  40. By Scott H on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

Joshua Cribbs? Really? That’s what we can hope for? Yeah…that sounds about right.

First day of FA and while many teams look like they were prepared to get deals done right out of the shoot, the Cardinals flounder aimlessly, schedule visits, and watch their players depart. Way to be prepared, fellas.

Also, I look at the names of players we are supposedly interested in…and i see SO LITTLE in the way of anything that looks like a real, tangible improvement.

I quote Pete Townsend – “Meet the new boss….same as the old boss”

Fitting that that line comes from a song called “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Could there be a more appropriate song title for fans of THIS team???

I, for one, am NOT getting fooled again. This is more of the same approach that is going to lead us nowhere but right back to where we have been.

We are already SOOOOO far behind the other teams in our own division. And we’re supposed to be psyched about Joshua Cribbs? Drew Stanton? Jerraud Powers??? I mean, I’m just assuming he’s not really a difference maker since I don’t even know who the “F” he is….

I say we get on our knees and pray WE DON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN, folks.

An interesting thought as a result of recent news…

He’s not a star by any means but what about Darius Heyward-Bey brought in for cheap. He’s the kind of guy Arians would want that can take the top off of a defense. Still young so might command more money and NE may be willing to give it to him but with Doucet gone we have an opening for a WR like that…

I agree with going after Sabastian Vollmer. Our entire division made big moves in the past 36 hours and the cardinals have gone in reverse. I agree that there is plenty of time to do things but we need to at least make one big move early. While other teams are solidifying their problem areas we are scheduling meetings. Looks like it’s going to be another free agency period where all the talent is gone and we are scraping the bottom of the barrel. (I.e. Adam Snyder)

You can be unhappy if you want, but Keim and Arians are going to go about this the way they planned on doing it. This team was already 5-11, well behind the Niners and Seahawks. Don’t know how it gets worse. They are trying to fix it the way they believe they can.

Cardinals are going nowhere for at least two years. We have to build thru the draft. The FA period is really for those elite team who are a player or two away from the SB.
For teams like the Cardinals, FA is a sucker bet. Very few players are going to play better (or as good) for the Cards than they did for their previous employer.
This is all about getting in position to get a franchise QB-if he does it, Arians will be a hero; otherwise, Arians will be a bust.
Conversely, expect some of our guys like Beanie and Toler to do well elsewhere- but that’s the price to be paid for being a lousy team. We owe these next couple of years to the ineptness of the Whiz/Graves years.

I realize we were 5-11 this last year and I also realize that we were behind the Niners and the Seahawks. However that is not an excuse for no movement. You are right however in I need to have trust in our managment but sometimes that is difficult. The Dolphins were well behind the Patriots but they were aggressive today. Thanks for all you do and all your answers.

This is meant for the team…Blah Blah Blah. Get something done! I don’t care with who and I don’t care how. I have been a fan of this team since 1988. I was 16. I was ecstatic when I learned they were moving to AZ. I got my first set of season tickets in 1996. 1998, 2008 and 2009 are the only seasons worth remembering. PATHETIC! In 2003 due to needing a job I gave up my tickets and moved to Rockford, IL and now put up with Bear chatter everyday. No, This is not about me forgive me if it comes off that way. All I am saying is is When? When are we going to do ANYTHING? Warner gets waaaaaayyyyyyyyy too much credit for that magical playoff year. He was good no doubt but there were a tone of guys who contributed. Too many to count. When? For crying out loud. I understand the many frustrations we fans have. I have seen every single game for a long time. Thank you satellite. But man it is annoying watching teams in the division get better sooner as we AGAIN wait and remain patient. Why? Why can’t we get on the train and find excitement and hope. I am tired of being patient. WINS…….I don’t care how and I don’t care with who. Dang it!!!!! JUST WIN!!! Even behind St. Louis!!!! Remember when St. Louis was the laughing stock of the NFL? Well they have passed arizona and swept them last season.
