Cards cut three

Posted by Darren Urban on August 19, 2013 – 10:17 am

The first official roster cutdown doesn’t come until next weekend, after the Cardinals play their third preseason game against the Chargers, but they released three players today: center Kyle Quinn, guard Scott Wedige and kicker/punter Will Batson. That brings the roster to 87. That first cut has to be to 75, so there may not be any hurry to fill those slots. Then again, allowing Batson to go might open the possibility of bringing in another kicker for the last couple of preseason games. Bruce Arians wasn’t happy Jay Feely missed a 30-yard field goal against Dallas — although Feely knocked home a 53-yarder — and there’s always a chance at competition.

It’s been a tough run for vet kickers of late, with Miami cutting Dan Carpenter and Buffalo cutting Rian Lindell. In both those situations, though, the team already had a young kicker in place who was competing. Batson was never going to unseat Feely. A change might be unlikely, but the Cards did make a special teams move at the end of the 2011 preseason, surprisingly bringing in Dave Zastudil late to go against incumbent punter Ben Graham. Zastudil ended up winning the job.

It seems that kickers in general with a lot of teams have been slow to get back into the game and I heard a commentator on ESPN say this was typical of preseason.
I think Feeley still has it and missing a kick in preseason isn’t all that big of deal, especially given the fact that there is really a small pool of kickers out there. He did make a 55 yarder so I wouldn’t count him out and ready for retirement yet.

feely has to be the most reliable kicker the cardinals have had in a while. neil rackers was very consistent when the cardinals first brought him in. he had an injury and was never the same again. keep feely. i like him.

    red bird of death!,

regarding the individual who’s name I won’t mention on this site again, I’m not sure that it is good for him. Did you see those stats, not good. Not good at all.

Glad to see BA react to the 30/yd missed field goal. The miss was at home in a non-pressure situation. A lot of HC’s would figure ‘if Feely can make a 53 he can make a 30′ but that is far from reality for BA.
Feely is still our best option but we all know that field goals might very well be the reason that we beat some good teams- the offense will be far from a finished product. at the beginning of the season.
Cards should make sure Feely is not fried. He’s 37 and missed the 30 yarder by quite a bit.

Just heard Breaston got cut. What a pick up he would be. I vividly remember the many tuff clutch catches he made for us.

We’d be insane to even consider cutting Feely.

don’t see breaston back here,i really think we have our wide outs, maybe a TE,but it’s looking like we have all the ingredients for this season, just narrow it down to the most consistant and spread our wings and lets see if the top dogs are ready for us.

D, Can you please ask the powers that be to get that little Video Pop up off the site? Every time I go to a link inner site, it pops up starts playing and when I click exit, it vanishes and keeps the sound playing!!!! Then I go to a different part of the site and boom I have another one playing!!! Then when I close the browser I have 6 big brother episodes playing at once!!! I’m going to stop visiting this site if this keeps up!!! That would suck!!!!

Batson was no good. All these college kickers you would think we could find one to compete.

    RE: Pop up

I gotta be honest, I have no idea what you are talking about. It isn’t our pop-up.

Feely is the best kicker in the league.

Blue Pitt… Darren is not your IT guy. You just need to get a Pop-Up Blocker going and review all your spam software to eliminate it. Get help… Cards site is good…

Breaston….Nope…. He was good at #3 for us but we have some very good choices now with the new players that are here… some one-handed stuff too!!!

Feely… All kickers hiccup once in awhile. He is very fit, and probably one of the smartest guys on the team….and an excellent role model for the kiddies coming in. We wouldn’t need a FG if we got 6, huh? BA was just a little frustrated that the Cards stalled and he wants to pressure everyone on the team. “Feels” is good!!!

Darren… Your patience with your patients is commendable….

Feely just makes me nervous. Missed a 30-yarder, then made one from 53. OK. So, which one are you going to see on a regular basis? Didn’t he make a 60-plus yarder last year against the Bills but also miss a 38-yarder that would have won the game for us? reminds me of Neil Rackers….whom I loved for his toughness but it just seemed like he could never make that crucial kick when you needed it ( ie against the Bears on Monday Night several years ago OR against the Packers in the playoffs in 2009. ).

Hey Scott H…. Please name 2 kickers that are better that Feely…. that are available…. We need to concern our dialogue with other areas of the team… like keeping our QB vertical…. establishing a good pass rush… and developing a reliable run game… there’s more… Feely has won many games and has lost nothing but an opportunity to win one or two… He even ran for a touchdown!!! That was cool….Be well…

    Dennis,
“Batson was no good. All these college kickers you would think we could find one to compete.”

That would require a little work, or should I say better scouting.
