Feely re-signs before free agency

Posted by Darren Urban on March 10, 2014 – 3:55 pm

Kicker Jay Feely used Twitter to let everyone know Monday he had re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals less than 24 hours before he would have hit the free-agent market.

The move makes sense for both sides. The Cardinals want a veteran kicker going into the offseason — they already signed Danny Hrapmann as a young, big leg to compete — and Feely wanted to return. The team has yet to officially announce anything. Feely had 127 points this season, converting 30 of 36 field goals. It will be interesting to see if the team is done at the position or if it will be Feely trying to fend off Hrapmann in a battle for the job. The Cardinals would like to get more touchbacks on kickoffs and there is always a possibility of carrying a pair of kickers (although I would not expect it.)

Regardless, the Cards have stability in the kicking game now that both Feely and punter Dave Zastudil have avoided free agency as the offseason gets underway. UPDATE: Kent Somers reports it’s a one-year deal, and that Feely expects competition. Both make sense.

Doesn’t LS Mike Leach carry a sizable contract for a guy over 30 that “just” snaps the ball?
Possible we see some movement there, Darren?

    RE: Leach

It’s always something to think about. But you better be very sure you find a replacement who does it well.

Yay, Jay Feely is back. But please, sign Karlos Dansby and Matt Shaugnessy at least.

K Danny Hrapmann can go to our Practice Squad. I am glad we resigned Jay Feely because now we solidified our Special Team players.

I’m still upset with Jay, don’t want to talk about it.

Good move. I agree with Andy. Get Dansby and Shaugnessey signed. Dansby is worth a two year deal at his age.

Ugh…better get to practicing your PATs.

I’m actually VERY happy to hear this! Feely just seems so dependable and still has a booming leg that can hit from 50-plus. Not much more you could want from a kicker. Kickers don’t win divisions but it’s just nice to NOT have to worry them when you GOTTA have that clutch kick.

    Hi Darren,

Did the cards already cut kickalicious?

My opinion, Leach is the best long snapper in the game. Game after game, snap after snap, you never hear about him — which means he did his job very well. Also, I don’t know of another long snapper that gets his share of tackles on punt coverage.

Sweet. Feely rules. His twitter is low key really funny.

Karlos Dansby, our team has offered you a contract worth $5 to $6 million per year. Why in the world do you want to “explore more options”?

I wonder if Feely bought a new pair of special kicker gloves to celebrate.

    They never signed him.

Darren, have the 49ers signed Phil Dawson or will he hit free agency? I’m just a little bit surprised we didn’t try to go after him, especially how well he had played for them..

    RE: Dawson

I don’t think he has re-signed but now that Feely stayed, I don’t see them chasing him.

guess dansby did alright for himself, amazes me the amount of money some teams throw around…oh well.now we see what minter can bring to the table, time for keim to hone his skills,at least he makes decisions with an eye to the future,i still believe if we get our LT we’re still on schedule for year two,and a shot at being ahead with a little luck.
