Cards add LB Foote

Posted by Darren Urban on May 6, 2014 – 10:20 pm

The draft is coming Thursday, but the Cardinals decided not to wait until then to add to the roster. The news came out Tuesday night that veteran linebacker Larry Foote is signing a one-year contract with the Cards. Foote confirmed the move to the Associated Press and later tweeted about coming to the Cards. (The team has yet to officially announce the move. Now it has.) With the uncertainty of what will happen with Daryl Washington and any possible suspension along with depth needs in general, a Foote signing makes a lot of sense. It shouldn’t impact the draft and it’s not even a lock the 34-year-old Foote will make the final roster depending on who else ends up on the team. This is a depth move. Nothing has been handed to Kevin Minter, but I don’t think this has anything to do with dissatisfaction with him either.

Foote considered coming here as a free agent back in 2010, He spent most of his career with the Steelers, including last year, although Foote played in only one game before rupturing his right biceps. He coincidentally was cut by the Steelers in March on the same day Pittsburgh released former Cards tackle Levi Brown.

    Darren,

Is this a “Dansby Role” type of move. Locker room type of guy.

Here we go! Steve Keim is warming up to taking care of some “insurance needs” so as to address other priorities in the draft! I like this signing of Foote; seems the Cards “outreach program” for Steeler players continues. Can never have too much depth!

    Go take ”Minter’s” job!

    RE: Foote move

I see it more like a Brinkley-type of move. A vet inside guy who provides depth if/when DWash suspended. I don’t expect him in a major role if everyone is healthy and performing.

nice move, just in case. seasoned veteran with another year left in the tank. You never know about injuries and such.

    Darren,
You keep writing if/when Washigton is suspended. Based on history from the league, what kind of suspension should we expect? Also when can we expect the league to make a decision?

No way to know for sure on either question.

Would not surprise me that Foote is here not only to play but to help teach the young LB’s that are with the team and the new ones from the draft. In the mean time who knows Foote might surprise us all and do very well in a Tod Bowles defense.

As we all know Steve Keim and BA had a lot of success with FA and UDFA last year and this may well be another good one year deal.

I can imagine that getting older and still playing in the Cold is not fun.

Welcome to Arizona and the Bird Gang Mr. Foote.

    GO CARDS!!!

    Darren,

I can understand why their may or may not be a suspension upcoming for DWash, what I don’t understand is how Aldon Smith with all the things going on with him off the field has not been addressed by the NFL?

    RE: Aldon Smith

I can’t speak to that. With Smith and Washington, any suspension wouldn’t come until the regular season, so it isn’t as if there isn’t some time.

Well….it ain’t Karlos Dansby, but….as a depth move, why not? Given his age and recent injuries, it’s hard to get excited about Foote at this point. But, OK. And given how we’ve done with aging Steelers in recent years….it makes me cringe a little.

Note to Daryl Washington – get your damn act together and keep your self out of trouble so we don’t have to worry about your position every damn year. C’mon, man!

I think this is a very good signing, it adds stability as for as experience for the linebackers, since we don’t know the outcome of Daryl Washington.

The Cards keep adding pieces to try and compete with the elite NFL teams in San Francisco and Seattle.

I’m back, at least for a little while. It seems your never to old (retired) to be recalled by Uncle Sam/Marine Corps, seems I will be making one more trip to a country in the Middle East in the near future to train the locals in there new army, thought 5 trips btwn those 2 god forsaken countries was enough, but guess I am not paid to think (at least not about how many go arounds in hell is enough! lol)

But anyway on to bigger and better things, the Foote signing is solid in my book, good locker room guy, and if healthy can /will surprise alot of sceptics. Maybe get Bullock/Mich ST in rd 5 and sign a couple of UDFA ILB’s and we should be set when DWASH is told to sit one more time. Hope they can get the kid from OK ST, as UDFA, wish I could remeber his name, i think he would be a gem as a UDFA!
On another Ripley’s believe it or not, was looking thru the mock drafts that the nfl.com analyst put out and 5 out of 10 of them had Bortles as a Cardinal at #20! Unbelievable that #1 they all believe he makes it that far #2 that we need a QB, (total waste of a pick in my opinion) another analyst had us taking Carr/Fresno St QB (even bigger waste of a pick) there was only 1 analyst pick out of the 10 at nfl.com that made my eyes light up he had Barr/UCLA falling to us (none had my man Z. MARTIN/ND RT/RG making it past pick #12 to bad all the experts are finally seeing that he is a beast and we will have no shot at him at #20!) Only good with all the Bortles predictions is we would have more than 1 team trying to trade up to our spot to grab him…can anyone say bidding war!!!! Which is great for Cards, take the most pick lucrative package after playing the teams against one another while our time on the clock ticks away, fattening the take home prize for every minute that ticks off the draft clock!!!

    Big Pappa,
“You keep writing if/when Washigton is suspended. Based on history from the league, what kind of suspension should we expect?”

Let me try to answer that for you. He’ll get suspended at least 4 games and up to 8. If he doesn’t, Goodell risks telling players it’s okay to beat on/break the bones of their wives/GF’s. However, knowing what kind of “expert” head/concussion doctor the NFL had in place years ago you just never know how stupid stupid can get.

well, any stability and experience that Foote may offer don’t come CLOSE to what Washington gives us on the field. It’s a long way from certain that Foote is even on the opening day roster, so let’s not get carried away here. Karlos Dansby could have been seen as a reasonable “replacement” for Washington last year. Larry Foote? I don’t see it.
