After shooting, a possible Powell scenario

Posted by Darren Urban on July 27, 2015 – 3:21 pm

The future of rookie wide receiver Damond Powell has yet to be determined, after the scary weekend shooting that left him hospitalized. Josh Weinfuss reports that Powell was hit once in the jaw and once in the neck, but is stable. His immediate football future, obviously, is in doubt. The Cardinals have not made any roster moves yet, but with Powell dealing with these injuries, keeping a roster spot for him seems unlikely — especially since new tight end Jermaine Gresham will need a roster spot once he officially signs his deal.

A likely scenario is that Powell would end up on the “reserve/non-football injury” list, which would keep him from counting against the 90-man roster. For that to happen, they would technically have to waive him and then 24 hours later when he clears he would revert to the team’s reserve-NFI list.

The Cardinals have their first training camp practice Saturday.

How many TE’s and RB’s do you see making the final roster if no major injuries in training camp. 4 TE and 5 RB?

    RE: Roster breakdown

That makes sense but we will see. Let’s see how healthy Gresham is too.

Geez, never mind his football future. After taking bullets to the neck and the jaw, let’s just hope his future as a human being who can chew and talk and smile turns out OK.

Darren- It is realistic for the Cards to keep Logan Thomas around as a TE, if he fails to land a QB roster spot, say practice squad???

    RE: Thomas

I have not heard one mention of Thomas changing positions.

Wow! When first reading about this incident, the lack of details seemed to indicate that Powell was hit with random gun fire from down the street. Now, it appears the facts show he, his friends in the car where they were sitting in front of his house, or his family were targeted.

He is lucky to be alive. As of now, police say they have not identified the perps who wore face coverings in the drive by. We shall see how this plays out…curious about motive?

Darren….off topic but did Fitz have his usual “get together” with teammates and other players at his home in Minnesota this summer?

    RE: Fitz

He did some stuff but it no longer is at the level it once was. Fitz has children now, and there is time to spend with them.

The Cards will be missing a good one come the start of camp.

Totally agree Scott H. I am in hopes Powell has a speedy recovery and rebounds in the game of life.

This injury sounds more serious than described and I have to wonder if he’ll be ready to play at all in the near future. Sounds like he should be very thankful to be alive and the scenario you described with him on the PUP list would be the best thing to allow for healing and sorting things out, although, I think he’ll need the support of his Cardinal brothers and family more than ever. Very sad thing to happen to a young person with a bright future. Prayers to him.
I think it’s even sadder that the media immediately infers that a victim has to have been doing something shady and can’t be in his grandmother’s driveway with friends, without being guilty of something other than being successful.
