A return for Gresham

Posted by Darren Urban on March 13, 2016 – 2:07 pm

Tight end Jermaine Gresham, a free agent, had been looking around. He talked to the Bears, he talked to the Jets. But multiple reports have Gresham choosing to stick with the Cardinals, at least for another season. More interestingly, Adam Schefter reported that Gresham passed up a four-year deal with $12 million in guaranteed money to return the the Cards for less.

Gresham’s return would seem to solidify the tight end position if the Cardinals decide not to draft one. Already back after signing their tender offers were Darren Fells and Ifeanyi Momah, while Gerald Christian is coming off a knee injury and former second-round pick Troy Niklas heads into his third season. Gresham did have a career-low of 18 catches last season, although a career-best 12.4 yards per reception. The Cardinals liked the job he did blocking as well.

Schefter is also reporting that the Cardinals are getting a visit from Panthers free-agent guard Amini Silatolu. Silatolu played in only nine games, starting three, in 2015. He is coming off an ACL tear in his left knee suffered in November, and would be depth potential on an offensive line that is likely to lose Ted Larsen in free agency.

You know the “culture” of the Az Cardinals has changed when players come back after turning down some big $’s….. Now if the can get Rashad, Freeney and CJ2K back…. These are not the same Cards I grew up with…..

This is just great, look at what coach Arians, GM Keim and Mr. Bidwill have done with the team these past years, a player that wanted to stay at the organization (I believe) because of the potential of it and the environment. Those 12 million would have meant the end of Gresham with Arizona in other times.

Great commitment from Jermaine, truly wishing him the best for this season, keep that blocking that Arians loved and have better stats at receiving yards and TD’s

Ok good Gresham is a Cardinal for at least another year. Passing up the money and 12 Million is extremely hard especially considering that they we’re also long-term deals at that! Amini Silatolu I barely heard of and he’s coming off of an ACL tear which sucks! I guess for depth purposes maybe. I would still like us to sign CJ2K, Center is a need with Sendlein hopefully coming back, Guard would be more of a depth move, and at RT, I think Earl and D.J. are going to battle it out. On defense, we desperately need a ”star” DE or OLB, and at opposite CB to Patrick like the aforementioned Leon Hall people we’re saying we planned to visit with and hopefully sign, and figure out what the heck we’re going to do at Safety because I want Johnson and Jefferson back as Cards! We got work to do.

I like this. Gresham got kinda a slow start last season but seemed to be finding his groove with our offense and began making plays. I like that we will continue to have continuity at the position and that Gresham understands BAs use and expectations for the TE with the Cards, which is different than other teams around the league. Having Gresham will give us some freedom to focus more on perhaps shoring up our Oline or putting more into our defense. The fact that he and Carson have history is another plus!

Silatolu is an interesting player, drafted in the 2nd rd back in 2012 and whom Mike Mayock stated “has Pro Bowl potential. I like this player and feel he would be an upgrade over Larson, only knock is that he has had 2 ACL surgeries in the last 3 seasons. Hope we sign him.

Pass up 12 mil guaranteed for a one year contract? Hmmm…..I think Schefty might have some false info there.

The point in outlining the stats for the TEs is that there is no point…

Mr. Gresham has a Win Win year going into 2016.

Cards are a Winning team and he is going to get even more playing time this year = Win

Next year he will have this year to show for the Money and may still stay = Win

He has got it going both ways from center, no matter which way he goes it’s all Good if he stays here this year and who knows what will happen.

    Win Win

    GO CARDS!!!

Fells plays, Gresham plays. Momah plays. This is getting very close to saying Niklas is a Bust.

Darren: Any news on Silatolu, is he still visiting or did he leave AZ without being signed? Thanks

I see Red Bryant is also returning for another year. I’ve read from multiple sources that this is the worse draft in decades so I’m hoping rather than rolling the dice and hanging out hopes on the draft for cheap labor, we lock up some of our guys who we know have a proven record of being playmakers before they get grabbed up by somebody else. This may be the year that BA/SK are really put to the test in producing a contender team.

like the TE room now with Gresham back in the Nest.
Don’t forget he had back surgery in June and never really was back to 100% until October. That and learning the BA offense ( as we have had others say , is a tough play book to learn ) we really did not see the type of player Gresham can be.

Good TE room, will get the job done and it did not cost SK huge FA money to do, now I would think TE will not be a big draft need, to let SK draft other position of need for this season.

Next year for the Cards is going to be very interesting with all of the FA’s on 1 yr contracts along with Fitz/Floyd’s contracts ending and Tyrann’s contract extension in the works..
The Cards better win the SB this coming season….

This team only has 2 years max for a SB run with these core players. The biggest need is pass rush. This is the only area where I wish they go all out and sign a big name player, but it sounds like they are getting out bid by other teams with bigger pockets. But I do hope they find a solution, fast. Because Freeney is not the answer.

They also need another CB opposite of PP, they need help at the LB position as Spoon was a bust. They need to continue to upgrade the oline, especially the center position. I still hope they go and get Stefen Wisniewski, the center for the Jaguars. Cardinals wanted him last year but a deal couldn’t be done. This guy would be a HUGE upgrade. Shipley wont cut it and Sendlein wasn’t cutting it from the get go.

They also need another RB to compliment DJ, either CJ coming back or someone else. Maybe in a diminished role Arian Foster could get a look, if CJ is not coming back. Anyway, still a lot of holes to fill but confident management has a plan, don’t want to ever go back to the “old days”.

    But anyway, GO CARDINALS!!!

Freeney CAN’T be the answer ( or even A PART of the answer ) if they don’t re-sign him.
