Mathieu the official starter for Pat’s Run

Posted by Darren Urban on April 22, 2016 – 10:27 am

Tyrann Mathieu had thought about taking part in the annual Pat’s Run in the past, but injuries have gotten in the way — including this year, after tearing his ACL late last season. But the all-pro safety will still be there bright and early Saturday morning on the campus of Arizona State University, serving as the official starter to the 4.2-mile race that honors the legacy of former Cardinals safety Pat Tillman.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Mathieu said. “I was speechless when they came to me. Obviously I know about Pat and his story, how he sacrificed and what he gave for this country and what he gave for this team. For me to be the starter at his run, it means everything.

“It’s a good thing for me to go out there and just be a part of it.”

Even though the race is tomorrow, there is still time to sign up if you do it today. Go here for details. (I too will be running the race, my 11th Pat’s Run.) Someday, Mathieu — sporting this year’s race shirt in the picture below (thanks Bruce Yeung) — will do more than start the other athletes.

“Hopefully next year,” Mathieu said, pausing to knock on the wood of his locker, “I can run in it.”

Dear Tyrann – – Speechless? Indeed, when one really understands the passion Tillman brought, it will bring awareness that few have experienced in recent decades. I’m not talking about football…it’s about freedom, liberty, and love of a country that provides endless opportunities.

There is no greater gratification than to contribute as did Tillman by realigning his priorities. He would climb the light poles in ASU stadium, and sit there swaying for hours contemplating what life means. To him and his brother, it was not fancy cars, mind-numbing ear phones, and clubbing; it meant that he was called to defend freedom and liberty. ((When I think about those really high poles, spine-tingling comes to mind.))

Tyrann, it seems after a few bumps in the road, the real lights are beginning to shine for you. Talk to Pat’s family openly; you will be stunned…be well, young man…

From Pat Tillman to The Badger, the Cards have come a long way, yet the core values remain the same. Love our guys, then and now.

Pat Tillman and Tyrann Mathieu are such an awesome pairing, any way you could possibly put them together. They seem to be kindred spirits in regard to the all-out manner in which they approach the things they are passionate about.

Just imagine what it would have been like to have them on the field together for the Cardinals….two men who, together, would be like an army unto themselves. Two great stories who wore / wear the uniform of the Arizona Cardinals. Makes ya proud to be a fan.

Want either Ryan Kelly, Nkemdiche or Paxton Lynch……….prefer Ryan Kelly…….if we take Lynch with first pick then we must either move up to 2nd round and take a center or take a center with the 3rd pick.
