Thursday before the Raiders

Posted by Darren Urban on August 11, 2016 – 7:09 pm

The Cardinals finally have a game to play.

The preseason opener will start a week that will feature two games and a week in San Diego, plus a couple of practices against the Chargers. First though come the Raiders, which will be a typical preseason matchup — a handful of snaps for the main vets, and then a training ground for the inexperienced.

Some thoughts as we head into the first game:

— Yes, you are going to watch D.J. Humphries at right tackle, which is how it should be. But I think I’m more interested in Brandon Williams at cornerback. Humphries is important, but he at least already played four preseason games a year ago. He’s done this. Williams not only is a rookie but he’s still only about a year into playing the position. Plus, it just feels — at least to me — that his performance will end up playing a larger role in the outcome of this team than Humphries.

— That doesn’t mean Humphries isn’t one to watch (or isn’t important for the outcome of this season.) He’s already a pretty good run blocker, and he’s shown a want-to that was missing a year ago. I’m not saying Humphries is ready to be an all-pro, but I think as a replacement for Bobby Massie, he will be fine.

— Some other new (and returning) players I’ll be watching: CB Alan Ball, CB Harlan Miller, G Antoine McClain, all the ILBs not named Kevin Minter — that’s a wide-open battle — TEs Troy Niklas and Ifeanyi Momah, and WR Chris Hubert.

— Matt Barkley is going to get a lot of playing time. We’ll see if he can leave an impression.

— And as always, let’s just not have anyone get too banged up.

Olimpic games taking place close by
    Soccer being the all-nation passion

And all I care about in Brazil is football broadcast. We ain’t got any subscription other than NFL’s game pass – which is expensive for our patterns. Yet I follow them every day through what is available.

Being a die-hard Cardinals fan since 2009 (first experience ever with football) I’m crazy for seeing what this team can bring up this season. Having a simple glimpse of what our starters can do will be enough after months without football, and what interests me the most is how Golden will respond, like this kid and hope he and jones can create a fearsome duo rushing the passer.

A hug to all you Cards’ fans and let it begin.

Glad the game is live on NFL Network. Watching late here on the East Coast. Go Cardinals!!!

Oh, man, it is “Thurs Before / Friday Before” time again! Sweet.

I already know I am not gonna see any of this game ( out very late last night, gotta be up very early again tomorrow, so a 10:00 start in the east is just not gonna work for me! ). But I will eagerly await the reactions of those who do.

Don’t even care about the final score. Just want to see execution / protection of our QB’s / NO INJURIES. But, hey, as long as we are playing a game where they are keeping score….wouldn’t mind if we score more points than the other guys! 🙂 Plus, I work with a Raiders fan who is already talking you-know-what.

As always, my favorite post of the year, The first XXXday before the XXXXX. Hoping we see these all the way to February.

Thought the Patsies looked pretty good last night
even with a backup QB, I think it’s going to come down to a coaching contest more than anything else. We have amazing talent and BA is great but there is a reason Bilichick has won so many SBs–he’s the master at spinning straw into gold and pulling rabbits out his hat with a slew of aces of his sleeve. Could be the hottest game of the opening week! It’s beginning to feel like football!
While I know this game is important and will be an audition game for many, just hope our players can play well with no injuries; it is what it is–preseason.

Darren – Your # 1 and 2 to watch are also mine, but I I will also watch closely C, RG and RT, and our first team defense pass rush.

Scott H – you old married guy! Cmon Man!. Its the first game of the year at least give me to half time. You know in the east for how many years we have waited for our teams games to be on live TV. I think you are getting spoiled these last couple of years, ha ha ha!

20 minutes to game time and I took the wife and kiddies swimming this afternoon and then feed them so off to sleep they go and this old married guy is staying up to 1 AM to root on his Cardinals.

    GO CARDS!

    CARDS62 –

LOL, man! For a pre-season game, I just couldn’t doom myself for Sat morning with a big day ahead of me. Had to work than it was off to see Jimmy Buffett on the beach in Atlantic City!

If it had been a regular season game, I would have arranged things differently and would have been there until the end.

And, yes, I am old! Hence, my anxiousness to see this team win a SB. MY window is closing, too!

    JohnnyBluenose –

I’ve never been there, but one day I will. Kinda hard to move, mainly now – out economy has been going downhill for quite a time.

I took a trip to US back in May, but as it’s not football time I didn’t have the chance to see a game. I love the way you deal with sports, specially football.

But you can be sure that inspite our not having midia coverage of it, I’m with Cardinals from the moment they stepped in on the first preseason game till the last man out of their last game.

    Keep in touch, see ya!
