Smokey Brown back, Okafor will play

Posted by Darren Urban on August 21, 2016 – 1:50 pm

Bruce Arians just spoke to the media prior to Sunday’s practice, with a lot of good injury news coming out of it (all of which will extrapolated upon later on azcardinals.com.):

— LB Alex Okafor has decided to try and play with his torn biceps muscle. Arians said it will be a matter of pain tolerance more than functional strength.

— WR John “Smokey” Brown has been cleared from concussion protocol and will return to the practice field. Needs to get in shape, but he’s finally back.

— DT Robert Nkemdiche is “close” to coming back from his bad ankle. Arians said he hopes he’s out there Wednesday. The Cards practice today and Monday and are off Tuesday.

— The PUP guys — S Tyrann Mathieu, CB Justin Bethel and DT Frostee Rucker — are back doing individual drills today and are in uniform for the first time.

— G Mike Iupati (knee) is not practicing.

Darren: Will Tyrann try to forego wearing the knee brace again when he is fully cleared to play? I know he doesn’t like wearing it.

    RE: Brace

Pretty sure he’ll be wearing it this season.

The real ?? is:: If Tyrann wears a brace, which leg does he choose? Seems he needs 2 of them. With the new light high-tech carbon braces, he could probably get used to them… Bizarre prospect for protection… I’ll take him at 90% if the brace(s) slow him a bit…still better than most with his sterling effort…later Cards Fans

Glad to see the team getting healthier. Now I would like to see a change in the mental preparation. I know it’s pre-season and the starters are not playing much, but this team seems a bit more cocky than usual. Last year was last year. Maybe this week, we will start to see some improvement. Pre-season is all about finding the best 53 and getting some continuity. Coach will make sure the best 53 is on the roster, but I am a little concerned with the teams mindset. Hopefully, the humble pie was served in San Diego. I’m ready to see the starting offense get in the end zone. And ready to see the defense produce a series of 3 and outs. Two weeks until New England. I’m getting excited.

    Darren,

Iupati’s knee… same one that was hurt during last season. Any cause for concern?

Don’t know. He was walking around fine yesterday. Arians wasn’t real forthcoming when asked about it. We’ll see.

Mostly very good news. But what is going on with Iupati?? I’m assuming if that were anything serious, we would have heard something about it. Just a vet’s day off?

This sucks for Okafor and I have to wonder just how effective he will be playing injured. I hope Brown is really ready to have his best games ahead because he was dropping a lot of balls starting in Detroit and I have the feeling he will predictably be Carson’s “go to guy”. Our receivers, other than Fitz, haven’t showed us much so far and it’s time for everyone to get their head in the game and remember they really haven’t done **** and aren’t stars until they get that ring.
Hoping for the best this week, GO TIME IS NOW!

Hasn’t anyone noticed how well JARON Brown has looked so far??? He has the very unfortunate circumstances of having Fitz, Floyd, and Smoky ahead of him on the depth chart. But that’s HERE. On a team that has exceptional depth at WR. Put Jaron on many other teams in the league right now and you would definitely be hearing more about him. This kid can play. And even on this team, he has looked like someone who should probably get more playing time.

Im a little bit concerned about Smokey’s continued headaches after being cleared to play & would hope that rather than rushing him back would think now would be a good opportunity to get Jaron extra snaps in case he has to step into the #3 spot to start the season. He actually has looked better than Floyd w more energy. Haven’t got to see much of Smoke’s catching the ball in preseason which he struggled with later in the season.
At this point, I just would like to see a team that looks hungry to set the world straight. Of course, playing smart and staying healthy is the most important thing and it may good to keep a little mystery around how well the HB is coming back or if our veteran play makers will be as powerful as before.
Watched the Seahawks game & believe they are going to be an even greater force this year. No point in losing players in preseason!
