Holt sees some Faulk in David Johnson

Torry Holt is helping coach the Cardinals receivers this week, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate the running game. In his years as a Pro Bowl wideout with the Greatest Show On Turf, he played with one of the greatest running backs in NFL history: Marshall Faulk. Tuesday, Holt said he could see comparisons to the Cardinals’ excellent running back, David Johnson.

“Marshall did everything, and I see (David) the same way,” said Holt (pictured below with wide receivers John Brown, left, and Marquis Bundy). “He can do a little bit of everything.”

Last year, during a brief visit to the Cardinals’ facility, former Cardinals (and Cowboys) running back Emmitt Smith compared Johnson to Bills great Thurman Thomas in terms of their all-around games. And that was before Johnson had his marvelous second season.

Johnson earns the Faulk comparison from Holt.

“He’s smooth,” Holt said. “He’s bigger than Marshall. But he can run, run between the tackles, run on the outside and he can catch. Those are where the similarities are. Again, size is different. I haven’t been in the meeting room with (Johnson) yet so I don’t know where his football IQ is. Marshall was extremely smart with the game.

“But there are some similarities in their games, particularly with catching the ball out of the backfield. (Johnson) is very smooth.”

Holt mentioned one other running back who he thought was as natural catching the ball as Faulk and Johnson — Bengals rookie Joe Mixon.

Not related but just saw that the Jets released LB David Harris. Wow. Seems like a good man to have around….wonder if the Cards will show any interest. Not to take anything away from my man Dansby but….Harris is probably everything that Dansby is, maybe more, and 3 years younger. He looks like a SWEET pick-up for somebody.

Damn….guys like Harris and Jeremy Maclin and Eric Decker getting released….when are we going to see a CB of that caliber become available??? THAT’S what we need!

If nothing else, be glad you’re not a Jets fan. They look like they are trying to do everything they can to assure that they are bad enough to get the first pick in the draft next year. And ya know what? My money is on them!

Must be great for these young WR’s to have guys like Larry Fitzgerald and now Torry Holt to learn from. Could there be any better models to follow than them???

I don’t know if he would ever give an honest answer, but I’ve always wondered….which trio of WR’s did he think was better – Holt / Bruce / Hakim or Fitz / Boldin / Breaston? Honestly, you couldn’t really give a wrong answer there. Both trios were awesome. And both trios had one very notable thing in common – Kurt Warner! They both had a QB that could bring out the best in them.

so to continue with Scott H’s line of thinking….should we expect to see T. Bowles back here next year if BA retires?…..just food for thought..

DJ is a Super Star in the making…

I don’t see DWash playing for the Cowboys as long as S. Lee is healthy…well then again, maybe he does have a chance with Mr. Lee’s history…

High praise indeed coming from a Mr. Holt! I hope he’s able to come back on a permanent basis to help our Card’s receiving corps achieve sustained excellence.

Funny, during the “All or Nothing” episode, against the Packers, Badger is on the sideline saying almost the same thing as Holt. DJ is like Faulk only bigger.

BTW, who was that guy on the board way back in Feb talking about that young back Joe Mixon and comparing him to DJ .

Also, thinking about Warner withBruce, Holt and Faulk, it got me wondering, how good would the 2008 cardinals have been if the had DJ ? He was born 8 years too late.
