Abraham active for Niners; Ryan Williams sits

Posted by Darren Urban on December 29, 2013 – 12:56 pm

The final inactive list of the season contains no surprises. Linebacker John Abraham is active despite groin issues, as is safety Rashad Johnson. Running back Ryan Williams completes a season where he was healthy and inactive for every game — the only Card to not dress at least once. What the Cardinals do with Williams this offseason is one of the more intriguing storylines, even if it might not mean a lot the way the team has been built/run.

The Cardinals full inactive list:

– QB Ryan Lindley

– RB Ryan Williams

– LB Dontay Moch

– S Curtis Taylor

– T Nate Potter (G Earl Watford active with Daryn Colledge starting but battling sore back)

– TE Kory Sperry

– DE Ronald Talley

Fitzgerald, Housler active in Seattle

Posted by Darren Urban on December 22, 2013 – 12:32 pm

As expected, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is active today for the Cardinals after suffering a concussion last week in Tennessee. That’s important, as is tight end Rob Housler (groin) as the Cards need all their weapons. Another interesting twist on today’s inactive list: Quarterback Ryan Lindley is active, meaning all three QBs are up. That is a nod to the gimpy left ankle of Carson Palmer, not that he won’t or can’t play, but more that if he is hit the wrong way and sent out, the Cards would want to make sure they still have two healthy quarterbacks once Drew Stanton was put in the game.

Safety Rashad Johnson (ankle) is indeed inactive, meaning rookie Tony Jefferson is starting. With Lindley up, the “new” inactive is offensive lineman Nate Potter.

The full inactive list is:

– S Rashad Johnson (ankle)

– RB Ryan Williams

– G Earl Watford

– DE Ronald Talley

– LB Dontay Moch

– T Nate Potter

– TE Kory Sperry

Housler sits, but Palmer, Floyd playing

Posted by Darren Urban on December 15, 2013 – 1:06 pm

Not surprises with the Cardinals’ inactives list today in Tennessee. Tight end Rob Housler, who didn’t practice all week with a groin injury, is not dressing. Quarterback Carson Palmer (right elbow) is playing, as is wide receiver Michael Floyd (ankle). Tight end Kory Sperry is playing in Housler’s place. Wide receiver Brittan Golden is also active this week while reserve safety Curtis Taylor is inactive.

The other five inactives:

– QB Ryan Lindley

– RB Ryan Williams

– LB Dontay Moch

– G Earl Watford

– DE Ronald Talley

In a big development, the Titans made wide receiver Justin Hunter inactive because he violated team rules. He’s been a good weapon for Tennessee of late and that can only benefit the Cardinals.

Palmer playing versus Rams

Posted by Darren Urban on December 8, 2013 – 12:52 pm

The (not unexpected) news: Quarterback Carson Palmer is playing today with his right elbow injury. Again, coach Bruce Arians said Friday that was probably going to happen. Also active, RB Andre Ellington, TE Rob Housler (who suffered a hip injury late in the week) and WR Michael Floyd. All good signs in a must-win for the Cardinals today against the Rams.

The inactive list:

– WR Brittan Golden

– QB Ryan Lindley

– RB Ryan Williams

– G Earl Watford

– LB Dontay Moch

– DE Ronald Talley

– TE Kory Sperry

Ellington sits out against Eagles

Posted by Darren Urban on December 1, 2013 – 9:30 am

The Cardinals will be without running back Andre Ellington against the Eagles today, not a surprise after he hurt his left knee in practice Thursday, sat out Friday and coach Bruce Arians said then they would be careful with Ellington. That means the Cards have to live without their dynamic rookie today. Fellow running back Ryan Williams is still inactive, however, meaning the running back rotation will be Rashard Mendenhall and Stepfan Taylor with some Alfonso Smith sprinkled in. Wide receiver Brittan Golden is active for the first time since getting hurt against San Francisco.

The inactives aside from Ellington and Williams are familiar faces:

– QB Ryan Lindley

– LB Dontay Moch

– G Earl Watford

– TE Kory Sperry

– DE Ronald Talley

Bethel active against Colts

Posted by Darren Urban on November 24, 2013 – 12:31 pm

Special-teams ace Justin Bethel is active for today’s game against the Colts, a big deal after the Cards struggled on special teams following Bethel’s concussion in Jacksonville. The inactive list is actually the exact same seven guys as the last two games:

– WR Brittan Golden (hamstring)

– QB Ryan Lindley

– RB Ryan Williams

– LB Dontay Moch

–G Earl Watford

– TE Kory Sperry

– DE Ronald Talley

This week, inactives don’t change

Posted by Darren Urban on November 17, 2013 – 9:31 am

This is an infrequent occurrence: The inactive list is exactly the same as last week. That means questionable players like wide receiver Michael Floyd and linebacker John Abraham are playing. And as a quick aside, it is incredibly quiet here both in the stadium and in the press box considering we are 90 minutes from kickoff.

The inactive list is:

– WR Brittan Golden (hamstring)

– QB Ryan Lindley

– RB Ryan Williams

– LB Dontay Moch

–G Earl Watford

– TE Kory Sperry

– DE Ronald Talley

Cards’ D tops and Sunday’s inactives

Posted by Darren Urban on November 10, 2013 – 12:56 pm

We interrupt the normal gameday inactives post — because there are no surprises on it following the bye week — to note the Cardinals’ defense, coming into the weekend, were the top defense in the NFL based on footballoutsiders.com’s DVOA rankings. The DVOA rankings are in many ways better than the NFL rankings because it takes into account so much more than just yards. (DVOA stands for Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, balancing a team against the league average and multiple categories). FO says the Cards’ strength of schedule plays a factor, as does the turnovers (although DVOA doesn’t give a ton of credit for fumble recoveries, because those tend to be the luck of the bounce) and the fact the Cards do well defending on second- and third-downs. Something to chew on going into today’s game.

Speaking of today’s game, the (not surprising) inactive list. Bradley Sowell will start as usual at left tackle, Jake Ballard gets a spin at some tight end:

– WR Brittan Golden (hamstring)

– QB Ryan Lindley

– RB Ryan Williams

– LB Dontay Moch

–G Earl Watford

– TE Kory Sperry

– DE Ronald Talley

Ellington starts, Ryan Williams not active

Posted by Darren Urban on October 27, 2013 – 11:53 am

Running back Rashard Mendenhall is sitting out today’s game against the Falcons with his bad toe. That was expected. Andre Ellington will start in his place. That too was expected. And Ryan Williams is inactive again, which, in the end, probably should have been expected too. If Williams isn’t playing special teams — which he isn’t, no matter what the reason — it’s tough to have him up. Newcomer WR Teddy Williams, who will play tandem speed guys on special teams with Justin Bethel, is active.

Besides Mendenhall and Ryan Williams, the rest of the inactive list:

– WR Brittan Golden

– QB Ryan Lindley

– G Earl Watford

– TE Kory Sperry

– DE Ronald Talley

Campbell playing against Seahawks

Posted by Darren Urban on October 17, 2013 – 4:02 pm

It seemed pretty obvious with the way Calais was talking all week, but the defensive end, five days after being taken off the Candlestick Park turf on a stretcher, is playing tonight against the Seahawks. That’s a big deal (and not as scary as it once might have seemed since Campbell said he had been ready to walk off the field last week before the medical staff said no way.) Campbell has six sacks in the last eight games he’s played against Seattle and is having a very good season.

The inactive list, actually, is about what you would expect. LB Dontay Moch is inactive today, a mild surprise but against a team that figures to run a lot, not a shock. Aside from Moch, those sitting are:

– QB Ryan Lindley

– WR Brittan Golden (hamstring)

– RB Ryan Williams

– LB Kenny Demens

– G Earl Watford

– TE D.C. Jefferson

The roof will also be open tonight for the first time this season.
