Floyd, Mathieu active and a new O-line

Posted by Darren Urban on November 27, 2016 – 9:34 am

The Cardinals will have both wide receiver Michael Floyd (hamstring) and safety Tyrann Mathieu (shoulder) on the field today against the Falcons. The Mathieu news wasn’t unexpected. Floyd worked out for head athletic trainer Tom Reed before the game and looked OK. It makes the inactive list one devoid of big names, unless you want to count first-round draft pick Robert Nkemdiche, who has been there more often than not this season.

One other player active today is guard Earl Watford, among reports there could be changes on the offensive line today. We’ll see of D.J. Humphries gets a chance to play left tackle and/or Ulrick John plays right tackle. If there are changes now, it would seem to be production-based, since everyone is active. UPDATE: And the changes have been implemented, based on pre-game warmup. Humphries is the left tackle, Mike Iupati the left guard, A.Q. Shipley still at center, John Wetzel at right guard and John at right tackle.

The full inactive list:

— WR Marquis Bundy

— S Christian Bryant

— LB Sio Moore

— G Cole Toner

— DT Olsen Pierre

— DT Robert Nkemdiche

— DT Ed Stinson

Mathieu inactive in Minnesota, Bucannon playing

Posted by Darren Urban on November 20, 2016 – 9:30 am

Safety Tyrann Mathieu is inactive against the Vikings today because of his shoulder injury. He was limited all week, and in the end wasn’t quite ready to go. Fellow cornerback Tharold Simon (ankle) also is inactive, so Justin Bethel and/or Brandon Williams will need to play bigger roles this week again. The good news is money linebacker Deone Bucannon (ankle) is healthy and will be playing for the Cardinals.

The full list of Cardinals inactives:

— WR Chris Hubert

— CB Tharold Simon (ankle)

— S Tyrann Mathieu (shoulder)

— G Cole Toner

— DT Olsen Pierre

— DT Robert Nkemdiche

— DT Corey Peters (foot)

Nkemdiche returns to inactive status

Posted by Darren Urban on November 13, 2016 – 12:59 pm

The Cardinals aren’t completely healthy, especially in the secondary, which makes some new players in play today — like safety Christian Bryant, recently elevated from the practice squad. But the defensive line is healthy, so there are changes, including a return to the bench for first-round pick Robert Nkemdiche. Also noteworthy is the fact Ed Stinson, who has finally recovered from his toe, is a healthy scratch today with Xavier Williams active. Newcomer Taylor Boggs, a guard who Bruce Arians said earlier in the week would’ve made the roster out of training camp had he not gotten hurt, is active over rookie Cole Toner.

The full inactive list for the Cardinals:

— WR Chris Hubert

— CB Tharold Simon (ankle)

— S Tyrann Mathieu (shoulder)

— G Cole Toner

— DT Olsen Pierre

— DT Robert Nkemdiche

— DT Ed Stinson

For the 49ers, they have both RB Carlos Hyde (shoulder) and WR Torrey Smith (back) active today, despite questionable status.

Floyd, Smoke both active against Panthers

Posted by Darren Urban on October 30, 2016 – 8:34 am

The Cardinals will have a full receiving corps against the Panthers.

Michael Floyd and John “Smokey” Brown are both active against the Panthers today, so that should help a passing game against a defense that has had its issues against the pass. After how beat up the Cards were after the Seahawks game, the inactive list isn’t bad. The full list:

— WR Chris Hubert

— LB Alex Okafor (calf)

— G Cole Toner

— DT Olsen Pierre

— TE Darren Fells (ankle)

— DT Ed Stinson (toe)

— DT Xavier Williams

The Panthers, who were already going to be without their starting left tackle Michael Oher (concussion), are also without arguably their best cornerback today with James Bradberry sidelined with a toe injury.

Palmer active, but no John Brown against Seahawks

Posted by Darren Urban on October 23, 2016 – 3:56 pm

No surprise after Friday’s news, but wide receiver John Brown won’t play tonight against the Seahawks because of his leg issues stemming from a sickle-cell problem. I think there is optimism Brown will be back at some point. When that is is an unknown for now. Coach Bruce Arians said the team was working on a solution. Short-term, a game off makes sense.

Other than that, an expected inactives list. Jaron Brown (knee) is going to play. Carson Palmer (hamstring) is going to play. The full list:

— WR John Brown (leg)

— CB Brandon Williams

— LB Gabe Martin (knee)

— G Cole Toner

— DT Olsen Pierre

— DT Ed Stinson

— DT Xavier Williams

For the Seahawks, safety Kam Chancellor (groin) is inactive tonight. He didn’t practice all week so it isn’t a surprise, but it’s a key missing piece.

Nkemdiche gets to play against Jets

Posted by Darren Urban on October 17, 2016 – 3:58 pm

So, after all that, rookie Robert Nkemdiche will be active tonight against the Jets.

It was will-he-or-won’t-he all week, with Nkemdiche and Bruce Arians both sounding optimistic the defensive tackle would be active for the game and then Arians on Saturday sounding less so. But now that we are here, Nkemdiche will be dressed out. How much he plays is another story. It’s Nkemdiche’s first game since the opener, when he got 10 snaps against the Patriots. Since then, he not only was healing from his ankle but also battling himself when it came to prep and knowing the plays. He’s passed the test this week.

The full list of inactives:

— CB Brandon Williams

— RB Kerwynn Williams

— DT Olsen Pierre

— DT Xavier Williams

— G Mike Iupati (ankle)

— TE Hakeem Valles

— DT Ed Stinson (toe)

For the Jets, linebacker David Harris is out but cornerback Darrelle Revis is active. ESPN is reporting Revis will cover Larry Fitzgerald. Also, Patrick Peterson lost the bucket challenge this week:

Kerwynn Williams cut; Nkemdiche sits

Posted by Darren Urban on October 6, 2016 – 4:05 pm

Not any surprises on the Cardinals’ inactive list. Not anymore, not when Bruce Arians made it pretty clear Friday this wasn’t a game where he thought rookie Robert Nkemdiche should be up. So he is not. And the  Cardinals also made a roster move Thursday, promoting tight end Hakeem Valles to the active roster with Darren Fells out for the game. To make room for Valles, the Cards cut running back Kerwynn Williams, who was just signed Tuesday.

Injuries, actually, play a big role in the inactive list for tonight:

— QB Carson Palmer (concussion)

— G Cole Toner

— DT Olsen Pierre

— TE Darren Fells (shoulder)

— DT Robert Nkemdiche

— DT Ed Stinson (toe)

— DT Josh Mauro (chest)

Frostee Rucker will make his return after missing the last few games. Not having Mauro hurts; he’s a guy that, if he’s not playing because of injury, you know he has to be pretty banged up.

Brandon Williams, Nkemdiche sitting vs Rams

Posted by Darren Urban on October 2, 2016 – 11:57 am

After a week in which Bruce Arians talked about young players needing to follow the example of the veterans more often, the inactive list is filled with rookies — including cornerback Brandon Williams, who has gone from starter to inactive in the last three weeks. Marcus Cooper is the starter there now, with Tharold Simon apparently primed to get some defensive snaps if necessary.

Defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche remains inactive as well as the Cardinals look to avoid a second straight loss.

The full inactive list for the game:

— P Drew Butler (calf)

— CB Brandon Williams

— G Cole Toner

— DT Olsen Pierre

— DT Robert Nkemdiche

— DT Frostee Rucker (knee)

— NT Xavier Williams

Nkemdiche sits again against Bills

Posted by Darren Urban on September 25, 2016 – 8:32 am

No surprises on the Cardinals’ inactive list for the game against the Bills. Rookie defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche, battling an ankle and a deep defensive line room, will sit out the game. Although it is interesting that the Cards, with nine defensive linemen on the roster, will have four of them inactive.

Meanwhile, the Bills won’t have wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who has a bad foot, and won’t have receiver Greg Salas either or cornerback Ronald Darby.

The full inactive list for the Cards:

— S Marqui Christian

— G Evan Mathis (toe)

— LB Kareem Martin (knee)

— DT Frostee Rucker (knee)

— DT Robert Nkemdiche (ankle)

— DT Olsen Pierre

— DT Xavier Williams

Nkemdiche out against Bucs; Mathis active

Posted by Darren Urban on September 18, 2016 – 11:31 am

It probably shouldn’t be a surprise, given the way Bruce Arians called him a “non-factor” in his debut and then having him pop up Friday on the injury report as questionable with an ankle problem, but first-round defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche is inactive today for the Cardinals. Nkemdiche hurt his ankle before training camp even started and it’s possible he jacked it up again in practice.

While Nkemdiche flashed in a couple of practices, publicly Arians has continued to push the rookie. It’s beginning to feel a little like how Arians treated 2015 draft pick D.J. Humphries. Humphries, as we all know, was inactive all last season. The hope would be that Nkemdiche doesn’t fall into the same trap, although the depth the Cardinals have on the defensive line is there to be used if needed.

One slight surprise on the active players: Newcomer cornerback Tharold Simon is indeed active after being claimed Wednesday. How much of a role he has is TBD.

The full inactive list against the Buccaneers:

— WR J.J. Nelson (shoulder)

— S Marqui Christian

— G Cole Toner

— DT Robert Nkemdiche (ankle)

— DT Frostee Rucker (knee)

— LB Kareem Martin (knee)

— DT Olsen Pierre

And, apropos of nothing, the downside of losing the Bucket Challenge:
