Cards bring back the other Skelton

Posted by Darren Urban on November 16, 2011 – 10:31 am

The Cardinals re-signed tight end Stephen Skelton to the practice squad Wednesday, releasing wide receiver Isaiah Williams to do so. As Mike Jurecki mentioned, it’s a good week for the Skelton family. And yes, your math is correct — that brings the Cardinals’ total number of tight ends to five. But Todd Heap’s hamstring has kept him out, save for a play or two against the Rams, for basically five games, and Rob Housler has missed the past two games with a bad groin. You can’t have Jeff King and Jim Dray overworked in practice, especially if they have to do more in games.

Heap agrees to two-year deal

Posted by Darren Urban on July 31, 2011 – 10:42 am

The Cardinals have added yet another tight end. Veteran Todd Heap, a local product of Mesa Mountain View High School and Arizona State, who was released recently by Baltimore, has agreed to a two-year contract. Heap becomes the Cardinals’ sixth tight end joining Jim Dray, Stephen Spach, Jeff King, and rookies Rob Housler and Stephen Skelton. Obviously the Cardinals won’t need so many at the position.

The Cardinals kept three tight ends last year, and after signing King as a main blocker, drafting Housler and adding Heap, it will be interesting to see it that’s how the position filters out or if the remaining guys can make a mark. The Cardinals have not used the tight end much as a receiver over the past few seasons, but bringing in Heap and Housler may underscore a shift in philosophy this season.

Undrafted rookie class includes two brothers

Posted by Darren Urban on July 27, 2011 – 11:13 am

Tight end Stephen Skelton of Fordham and safety Jared Campbell of Miami — brothers of current Cards John Skelton and Calais Campbell — are among the 21 undrafted rookies the team has signed for training camp.

The rest of the lengthy list includes:

  • Northern Arizona WR Daiveun Curry-Chapman
  • Fresno State CB Desia Dunn
  • Baylor P Derek Epperson
  • Wofford S Tommy Irvin
  • Elon WR Sean Jeffcoat
  • Florida LB Duke Lemmens
  • Kentucky DT Ricky Lumpkin
  • Oklahoma T Eric Mensik
  • Syracuse CB Da’Mon Merkerson
  • Oregon State WR Aaron Nichols
  • UMass G Greg Niland
  • USC C Kris O’Dowd
  • Kansas State RB William Powell
  • BYU S Andrew Rich
  • Florida State LB Kendall Smith
  • BYU T Jason Speredon
  • Kansas T Brad Thorson
  • N.C. State G Jake Vermiglio
  • Michigan State T D.J. Young

As has been mentioned before, all rookies are going to have an uphill climb this season because of the lack of offseason work. Undrafted guys usually have a tougher time anyway.
