Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt had some fun today when he was told 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill, on the conference call to Arizona, noted that his coach Mike Singletary ran “by far the toughest and longest training camp I’ve ever been through.”
Whisenhunt, a tight end for 10 years in the NFL so one familiar with the trenches, couldn’t pass on the opportunity.
“Is training camp that hard for a quarterback?” Whisenhunt said, his smile wide. “I know his arm will get sore, or his groin will get sore from all the drops, but it’s not like he’s tackling or running routes or hitting people. As far as that goes, I’m not going to comment.”
Generally, though, Whisenhunt said “We’ll find out Sunday how these teams match up and play.” The idea the 49ers (and the Rams, with their new coaching staff) ran boot camp-type camps came up when the Cards were in Flagstaff. And Whisenhunt wasn’t particularly pleased some suggested that the Cards weren’t working hard enough. It didn’t make sense, given that the Cards’ camp was the exact same last year and they made the Super Bowl. But it’s definitely an interesting compare/contrast — even if you do play quarterback.
