Rolle feeling taxed

Posted by Darren Urban on January 26, 2010 – 9:33 am

Antrel Rolle got good news yesterday when he was named to the Pro Bowl, and he’s soon going to be in good shape with his contract — either with a new long-term deal with the Cards or the ability to test free agency, in all probability, thanks to the $12-million-plus he is scheduled to make in the final year of his current contract.

He apparently will need the dough. Forbes is reporting Rolle is being hit with a $2.2 million tax bill from the IRS, stemming back to his first two NFL seasons (2005 and 2006) after an audit. Rolle is fighting the claim.

How does Rolle’s Contract break out.? I have read that he has an $8M+ contract for next year. Is there a bonus that kicks in as well? To find his cap number (this won’t matter next year) I know you would add the prorated portion of his rookie signing bonus, but that would not bring it to $12M.

I’m not convinced that the Cards won’t just pay him the $8M next year, though an extension is certainly a possibility.

Rolle is due $8.1 million in salary next season and a roster bonus of $4M. For that kind of money, the Cards are much better served trying to fold it into a new contract rather than just for one season.

I know the season just finished but do you know if any contract talks started with any player at this point or is it behind closed doors and no one is talking right now?

I have not yet had a chance to talk to anyone about that.
