Porter, Foote want to be Cards UPDATED

Posted by Darren Urban on March 11, 2010 – 12:39 pm

Linebackers Larry Foote and Joey Porter worked in a meeting with a handful of media types as they wrap up their visit in Arizona. Each clearly would like to be Cardinals — Foote even said that was his preference — although we know how these things work: Money talks. I’ll have more from their interviews a bit later (and we will have video later too) in a homepage story. I don’t necessarily expect news of a signing today, but who knows, I could be wrong. Neither have a contract offer yet, but I’d guess that’ll change soon.

Foote: “I want to be a Cardinal, so hopefully we’ll get it done.”

Porter: “If it happens, it’ll be good fit. I feel I can fill a need, that whole presence of getting to the quarterback.”

I hope to god they sign with the cards the defense will be much better this year watch out everyone i think the cards organization i showing they are still about winning and will win the west everyone says were done cause we let Rolle and danbsy go well even with them we broke a record letting 90 points be scored on us in the playoffs.. i think we are stepping up the Defense and i believe matt leinart will do great 4000+ yards this year for him watch

This is exciting. I am excited to see the cards make changes in the defense. I think the addition of vets like Rhodes, Foote and Porter will improve this defense alot.

The draft is always huge, but not a desperate time like years ago. Besides NT, there wont be glaring holes in the starting lineup. We can truely add depth.

I still think a young ILB is needed, as Hayes is slowing down (so is Foote). I would still add a passrusher, a corner and OL. But really, None of them would need to start.

So , adjusting my picks, I would go with MT Cody with the 26th pick to fill the hole at NT.(only if Sean Weatherspoon is taken) I’m sure Foote and Hayes would endorce a 360 pound NT eating up blockers and allowing them to run free.

Cards are having a very exciting offeason, even with our loses.

Please sign at least one. We need the veteran leadership for at least a year while Davis and Brown continue to be groomed. Ohh… and draft DE/OLB Jerry Hughes if he’s there! Ok, That’s my 2 cents.

It feels so weird after 20+ years of following the team to see people overpay our players and us replace them with quality players at bargain rates. people actually want to play for the Cardinals now! Don’t pinch me. Is it me or have we started to become the new Pittsburgh Steelers?

SIGN THEM TODAY!!!! Dylan: While I agree with you that the Cards defense will be beter this coming season…you are dreaming if you think Matt Leinart will throw for 4000+ yards. This team will become more of a running team now that Warner is gone. The games will look a lot like the Titans game from last season. Ball control and dont let Leinart loss the game for us. Power running is the game plan for next season.

Please please please don’t let them leave. Just think about how this will take pressure off DRC ( if he is ready come the pre-season) and all the secondary members. This will add a great pass rush while leaving the CB s open to feast on errant throws. Please Graves don’t let these guys do elsewhere.

In Whis I trust… get er done. I think if we sign these two we could steal Derek Anderson before he visits the Seachickens too. Being from Oregon I am sure he would love to play in the Pacific Northwest but add some depth with Foote and Porter along with our young LB’s and I think we’d nab him too. GO Front office… don’t let this slip through UNLESS they want a stupid deal.

I have a coupled of questions. First of all, with all these fans blogging the big wigs, such as Mr Graves, Mr. Bidwell, do they even read these blogs to see how the fans feel? Look, I know it’s not my money per say, when it comes to signing high profile players, but in my opinion things happen for a reason. From the reports I heard, the Cardininals were going to pay Dansby and Rolle comparable to what the Dolphins and the Giants paid, they just chose to go the other direction. From what I understand, Foote wants comparable to Fujita, which is nothing compared to what even Rolle was asking for. I don’t know what all goes into signing free agents such as these two, but it just feels so right. Almost as if it were meant to be. I just read an annoncement from Larry Foote has said, Cardinals are his first choice. I never thoght i would hear a free agent of his caliber want to sign with Az. With the exception of resigning Coach Whiz, I would have to consider these two to be the best off-season aquisitions we could get, and I have to agree with an earier blog, why are we even letting them leave town, to be enticed by another team? The Giants and the Dolphins sure didn’. C’mon Cards organization, let’s get this one right!!

lol- Ease up on Darth, bro…! I’m sure that, like all long-time Cards fans, we all have seen off-seasons where the moves they made left us wondering how bad they really want to win. Particularly in areas where it comes to spending the money to get quality players. Graves, Whiz and Bidwell Jr. have, without a doubt, changed that culture over the last few years. But after the exodus we just saw, spending a bit for these quality players who obviously want to be Cards would send the signal to all of us fans that we are still on track. It would tell us that losing Q, Rolle and Dansby wasn’t about whether or not the team is willing to pay for quality, but that it was part of an actual strategy.

Sign them is right. I was never sold on Rolle, he has been burned many many times, and is way over priced. I think dansby did some ok things, but we all know defenses take years to mesh great together. Get 3 guys who have played together, and had the same coaches, what a no brainer

  58. By VoiceofReason on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

Loan — I’d be shocked if the Cards were actually prepared to pay Rolle and Dansby what they received from the Giants and Dolphins. They shouldn’t have. I have watched ever professional game both of those guys have ever played in, and while both are talented football players, neither is top-10 at their respective positions. Dansby has never been to the pro bowl, and Rolle only went this year becuase he was the eighteenth backup and the others were hurt or were playing in the Super Bowl.

The Cards are much better off paying far less to bring in Rhodes, Foote and Porter than keeping Dansby, Rolle and Okeafor both financially and probalby on the field as well…

Hey Darren, I have question for you and everyone who has comment on it. If you all had a choice to make would it be get Foote and Porter or build through draft and RESIGN 9-0 long term. Dont get me wrong I know these guys are good but iare they really worth what they are asking. If im guessing right Foote wants roughly 3y 20m 8-10 gauranteed..and Porter 3y 25-30m 10 gauranteed?

  62. By darrenurban on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

    Ron —

I think you can do both. Whether you want to do both, or whether you think they are worth larger bucks, that’s something else.

  63. By Scott H on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

What the heck, sign them both. We need something to get remotely excited about at this point. And it’s not like there’s really anything better out there for them. At least there’s the offer of these guys – Porter, Haggans, and Foote – being a solid unit because of their familiarity with each other and some of the coaches. But ya know what? Everything I’ve hoped for with this team so far this off-season has just been squashed like a bug, so…I ain’t wasting any hope on this. If it happens, it happens.

  64. By jredsaz on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

I think that these two players will fit nicely. One major problem with our D last year was that they did not make tackles on a consistent basis. Foote should help.

Further, I hope fans temper their expectations in regard to Porter. He will fill in perfectly the role Berry vacated with his retirement, a situational pass rusher. Anything more than that will be gravy. I just hope the Cards pay him for that role. If more expectations are paced on him than that we may be in for a let down.

  65. By 949cardsfan on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

What could the hang up possibly be? Like the other guy said, Foote and Porter are asking for substantially less than Rolle and Dancby were offered. Give them what they want, although they’d probably take a little less, they both want to be here. If they can’t sign a couple of guys that want to be here, they’ll never sign any FA of quality, we need more than the McFaddens and Laboys of the world. GRAVES, DO WHATS RIGHT, SPEND THE MONEY! WE REALLY NEED THESE GUYS TO COMPETE NEXT YEAR!

  66. By fighting bird on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

I want to sign those two man eaters also but lets also take care of ours first or atleast sit down with 90 and talk to him about signing porter and foote and the money situation that hes going to need which will make the other options hopefully fall in place with porter and foote. Thanks D.U for all that you do for the fans, I think we would go crazy in the off season if it wasnt for you.

  67. By 98CardsFan on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

This would be a major PR nightmare if the cards don’t offer something decent to either one of them. 1st of all, how often do players from longer-winning organizations want to play for the cards and refer to them as winners? Secondly, there is no guarantee that any of the players drafted in the early rounds will have a real impact to the defense on a consistent basis. It is an uncapped year, throw those older guys a bone and bring in their leadership. “Pay the men”.

  68. By thereisonly1 on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

thats exactly what we need in the middle is some INTIMIDATION. we need to totally change our philosophy if we want to succeed with this “new” team.. hard-nose defense along with a punishing running game is the ticket. leinart has never had either one of those things on his side, and i think thats one of the biggest reasons why he hasnt had a very successful NFL career. signing porter and foote will definately add some toughness to the team. sign these mofos.

i really hope that the cards sign foote and porter. our defense would be ridiculously scary. plus i think that rolle and kenny phillips don’t even come close to comparing with wilson and rhodes. those 2 backing up haggins, foote, porter, and hayes would be down right nasty, not to mention that they have to get through the big man dockett first! the cards organization needs to make this happen for the fans to still be intrigued to be a cards fan. losing rolle was no big deal cuz he gets burned all the time, i liked dansby but always felt he wasn’t all that he was hyped up to be. sign porter and foote ASAP!!! don’t even blink because they will be gone and we will have lost our chance!!! whiz has proven so much to the fans, well prove this one to us now! who better to shock the world with this upcoming season on our side?

I like Riley Cooper as a wide receiver in this draft in the same vein. When somebody moves on we ought to bless them with luck and be proud they have value to another team. I hope Urban does great things in KC, we taught him to hold onto the ball. Everybody stay calm about our visitors – it’s difficult to work out a big deal and loyalty by all parties pays dividends – that why reunions are exciting.

I love that there are players that WANT to come play for the Cards. What a sea change for a team that has seen so many players want to get out of town (even recently). I would love to add Larry Foote to this team. However, I would still see the LB position as priority number one on an aging defense (that or NT). I’m not so sure about Joey Porter. While I respect his talent, resume, and leadership capabilities, I’m troubled by the statement “I don’t feel I have to sell myself.” At what point, if ever, does that mentality slough? Especially since Bertand has retired, we need great people, not just great players. Foote seems like a perfect fit, and I would love to have him.
