The greatest 75 draft picks
Posted by on March 15, 2010 – 1:31 pmAnd now, we take a brief breather on free-agency debate …
The NFL and NFL.com are putting together, for the draft, the greatest 75 draft picks of all time, with fans getting a chance to vote. Each of the 32 franchises had 10 players selected as nominees, which not only had to be good players but bring value to whatever round they were chosen (so does, for example Aeneas Williams in the third round mean more than Peyton Manning first overall?). The list coincides with the 75th NFL draft.
The 10 best Cardinals’ draft picks chosen were (in alphabetical order): wide receiver Anquan Boldin, tackle Dan Dierdorf (pictured below blocking for Jim Ottis), wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, wide receiver/defensive back Roy Green, safety Tim McDonald, tight end Jackie Smith, running back Charlie Trippi, cornerback Roger Wehrli, Williams, and safety Larry Wilson.
Players are pitted, randomly, in head-to-head matchups and fans vote (through April 18th). Picks 11 through 75 will be unveiled on NFL.com and the NFL Network from April 19-22, with the top 10 unveiled in the network’s draft coverage April 22. Don’t forget the draft is over three days this year. The first round is Thursday night, April 22. The second and third rounds are on Friday night, April 23. And the final four rounds are Saturday, April 24.

Another popularity contest that ESPN does. It’s not a terrible idea, but the teams with the most fans (and bandwagon fans) will win. Oh well.

Wondered the same thing. But the team had no input in the picks.

I agree, Spitfire.
Expect to see nothing but a bunch of Steelers, Cowboys and Redskins in the top 20

Since it’s St.Patty week, here’s my pot of gold dream trade. How about we send Matt Leinart to Seattle to reunite with Pete, Seahawks send Aaron Curry to Philly, Philly sends McNabb to the Cardinals. Darren, I know your sick of McNabb talk, but I’m only dreaming.

Dream away. If the Eagles could get Curry for McNabb, I think they’d do it.

Might have been more interesting to see the 75 best NON-DRAFTED players.

Is this the greatest draft picks or best value – Jackie Smith seems obvious. Larry Centers was a heck of a draft pick – no one could “chip” on a DE like Larry. Larry Runs – Larry Catches – Larry Centers!!!! We’re not related…

What the hell about Adrian Wilson man? didnt the Cardinal;s draft him? no respect man. lol. At least Adub bleeds red. As I hope Dockette and many other young studs dreaming of the commig to the NFL eventually do. so, reading form the headline story there. Paris Lenon tore it up with the lions while foote just did alright. Hell, good job cards. Smart move I think. just hope we have something up our sleave still. Something to put us in a good position for not only a division title and playoffs, but a superbowl!!! maybe we can add some new all time greatest Draft Picks to the list.

Please stop the McNabb talk. Unless we draft groundhogs and giraffes at WR. If he was any type of leader Philly would have won a SB by now.

DRC#1 – great point! The heart and soul of the Cardinals is Adrian Wilson – it starts and ends with 24! Ding Dong the Wicked Witch is Dead – no this is not Ron Wolfley!

It’s hard as a fan to loose players you have cheered on for 3-7 years. That being said, I am excited to see where we are headed as a team. We obviously do not want any old players, like Foote or Porter or any other FA available this year. Lenon signed for low money because he wants to be on a team that wins more than 1 game a season, if not 0. That is why we took him over Foote, who wanted to be over paid because we have a need. It is obvious our owners and management are thinking ahead and only want to sign players who are of high quality and performance, see Warner, Fitz, Wilson. We can only have so many high paying spots on the team and I am happy we didnt waste them on Foote or Porter, yet. hahaha. We still have ayears to come and if we wanna save money for a better FA market or someone who might pop open before the season, like I dunno, Brian Urlacher or some old LB a team drops to make room. Im down with that. because we wont have to pay a despearte player as much as we would someone now.

DARREN,
Does it seem to you that the Cards organization, like Wiz and Graves and what not, are as concerned about holes in the team as much as the Cards fans seem to be? Or, are they more collected? more confident in the players they have to fill the holes? Do you thikn that all these changes are making the team better, or are we feeling we lost some of spunk as a team and our edge in the division?

I think, while the coaches and front office are always concerned about making moves (their jobs do depend on a winning product), I think fans are much more apt to wear their emotions on their collective sleeve.
And in blog comments.

Very well said DRC and Darren. Well said. If you don’t mind me saying? I agree about Larry centers. Every time I remember Centers he is jumping over Larry Brown-I believe it was- on a Monday Night blow out loss. He was tuff.

Wasn’t Pat Tilley drafted? Neil Lomax? Jay Novechek? Otis Anderson? A. Williams? Stump Mitchell? Eric Swan? Mark Smith?

Each franchise only got 10 picks for this exercise. I am sure the Cardinals and many teams could have had at least 50 legit candidates.

@ Larry…. Eric Swan?? Really? Major bust.

Hey Darren,
How many draft picks do the Cards officially have?

Right now, they have eight, including two in the third. They lost one of the fourth-rounders they got in the Boldin deal when they traded it for Rhodes.
