Who loves Joey?

Posted by Darren Urban on May 10, 2010 – 4:39 pm

A couple of leftovers from linebacker Clark Haggans, after talking to him about the story about he and Joey Porter I just posted:

Porter obviously delivers a love/hate relationship with many other players and fans. They love having him on their side, they hate him when he’s not. One person always on Porter’s side, though? Haggans’ mom.

“My mom loves him,” Haggans said. “He is one of her favorite people.”

Haggans said his mom used to go to sports bars (because she didn’t have a satellite NFL package) to watch the Steelers when he and Porter were there. “She used to hear a lot of flak (about Porter), ‘He’s mean, it seems like he is a crazy dude,’ ” Haggans said. “She would overhear people and she’d stick up for Joey, saying, ‘He’s not like that. He’s more misunderstood.’ ”

Speaking about the linebacking corps in general, Haggans (pictured below) said it was going to be “fun.”

“We obviously lost Karlos, Bert and Chike. But with G Hayes, myself, Joey … there is still a lot of experience. There is a lot of football 101 between us.” That will hopefully pay off with young linebackers like Cody Brown, Will Davis, Daryl Washington and O’Brien Schofield, but Haggans isn’t dumb, and before I even had a chance to move on, Haggans jumped to a parallel theme, noting, “I’m guessing the next question might be how old we all are, well, I feel fine.”

“I could run for days and everyone else is fine, Haggans added. “I just think it’s like fine wine. We get better with age.”

the only chance our defense will get better is just if some of our rookies or second year players step up and become starter

carlo. our defense is already better statistically. in my opinion. rhodes is a better improvement than paris is a drop off. especially adding our draft picks. doeckett campbell watson and the new kid. line better. check. lost dansby but rep;aced him with a vet and an early draft pick. lb’s say with the pickup of joey… we break even. secondary. we gain a true FS. lose the corner who always got beat… leaving a hole, but a chance at improvement. so I say secondary we improve also.

i think the defense will be better this year.. better players all around and a better lb corp too

I think the D will be better too. Rolle was never the best in coverage which was why we had to move him to safety. Rhodes will be much better there and Ware is back as well. Our D-line is going to be putting some pressure on the qb too.

I’m a little worried about middle linebacker, but that’s just cause Hayes has that bad back. He has been our best defender nobody talks about, and we really missed him in that New Orleans game. I hope whoever backs up his side be it Ali, Walker, or Beisel is hitting it hard with Lott this offseason in case they get their shot.

It should be a more consistent and motivated defense.

Obviously, Whiz feels these old shoes are very comfortable, despite the laces being broke on one and the tongue always sticking out on the other.

    Bad News If…..

…… if Docket or Rhodes become star struck and starts demanding money or causes contract drama….. If ADUB gets relaxed in his contract and focuses more on family than football therefore lackin in performance………. If Toler or Adams doesnt pan out in anyway causing our second DB to be an easy target……. If Porter and Haggans indeed play like an aging 34 and not a revivng 33……..if DRC, HAYES, WATSON fall to re occuring injury….. if campbell and new guy play like college rookies and not young impact players……. if paris becomes a joke pickup……

then we are in trouble. so. not likely… right. we are bad arse. make no mistake.

In the end, you can play “worst case scenario” with every team.

Erik i hope its not Beisel, when he played last year in place of Hayes he was terrible. He looked like he was running in slow motion

our D cant get any worse. Those massive big plays we always gave up and all those points. At least now we dont have to watch rolle dive in with his head down and miss a tackle or dansby run around guys and make the tackle 7 yards down field. In whiz i trust we will be better.

I know Darren. just trying to put in perspective how good our Defense has become. those scenarios are as far fetched as the idea that the 49ers are gonna take our division crown =)

Clark needs to go back to the Mohawk cut, in fact everyone on defense should get a Mohawk this year and by the way i cant wait to see Cody Brown on the field this year. barring injuries we are going to have an AWESOME team this year

We are going to be better because we finally got an in your face do your job or sit down DB coach in Henderson and I predict he will be the DC before long. In the ultimate team sport coaching is everything and we haven’t had it on defense. Best off season acquisition was DB coach Donnie Henderson. Wait and see.

When I look at the additions to the Cards Roster I want say “WOW”!!! like R Wolfley says it.

With a Core of Phenoms to build around the Cards have added Vets that are “FOR REAL” they did’nt come here to bul-ish around.

With 6 to 13 years experience in the league.

QB Anderson, Derek–Had Pro Bowl few years back.
CB/RTN Miller, Justin–Led NFL RTN yards no ? Speed!!
FS Rhodes, Kerry–True FS can blitz & cover.
G Hadnot, Rex—–Willing and able run blocker.
LB Lenon, Paris—100 plus tackles in 07 and 08.
K Feely, Jay——As good or better than Rackers.
LB Porter, Joey—-Capable of Double digit sacks no?
LG Faneca, Alan—9 time Pro Bowl Guard enough said.

Then you have the Draft picks where the Cards addressed some needs:

    Round Pick Player Position
1 26 (26) Williams, Dan DT-Should see time at NT.

    2 15 (47) Washington, Daryl LB-Good speed/tackler.
    (From Titans through Patriots)

    3 24 (88) Roberts, Andre WR-Led NCAA in RTN yrds 08
    (From Ravens)

    4 32 (130) Schofield, O’Brien DE-Return to form?
    (From Saints)

    5 24 (155) Skelton, John QB–Sports Science tested.
(From Eagles through Jets and Steelers)

    6 32 (201) Calvin, Jorrick DB-Tackler speed RTN
    (From Saints)

    7 26 (233) Dray, Jim TE–Combo Block and catch.

Some undrafted free agents to watch:

Williams, Stephen WR–Can catch high cross middle.
    Smith, Alfonso RB–Home Run Speed.
Jefferson, A.J. CB–Hard hitter with speed.

More on the Roster next time.

Back to the Cards Roster: Part 2

Let me start with the QB.

Matt is ready to close the mouth of the doubters.

RB B Wells is poised to start.

WR Fitz and company will get it done.

    TE D Byrd will surprise.

OL this Cards Oline is stacked.

Our DLine is going to shutdown the opposing O.

When LB’s get on the same page and look out.

CB’s are young but talented DRC and Toler will make the plays and no doubt with A-Dub and K Rhodes you can’t run or throw on this secondary.

    Go Cards!!!!!!!!

The DLBs will be on the same page. I know the energy and the ESP is there.
