Whiz’s opening speech

Posted by Darren Urban on July 30, 2010 – 5:03 pm

Coach Ken Whisenhunt just addressed the media to open camp. The key highlights:

— LB Gerald Hayes will start camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, as expected. Hayes has been dealing with back problems since last season, and had a surgical procedure this offseason when rehab wasn’t effective. Whisenhunt said Hayes’ surgery was the same that LB Monty Beisel had last year for his back problems. Hayes is able to come off at any time, and Whisenhunt said he wasn’t sure when Hayes would return. Hayes wouldn’t stop earlier but said when he arrived he wasn’t sure of his timetable to return. LB O’Brien Schofield (knee) also is on PUP as he rehabs after surgery.

— Whisenhunt wasn’t specific about the weight of G Deuce Lutui. Asked how Lutui was doing, Whisenhunt said, “We’ll find out tomorrow,” as the Cardinals await their conditioning test.

It was relatively short and sweet. The rain coming down as players and coaches arrived today in Flagstaff prevented much talking with the media. But the team is in place and Whisenhunt reiterated his usual message to open camp — the team is happy to be at camp and ready to get to work.

Not necessarily related to this story, but I am truly depressed at the moment. I’ve been getting all psyched up for camp and the start of the season…and then I was on and saw a picture of Anquan Boldin in Ravens purple and black with one of their feature stories. Sigh…damn, I guess I just can’t believe Q really is gone. I love Fitz and Steve Breaston and I am very excited about Early Doucet, but…something will be missing with Boldin gone. i really do believe that the success that this team has had over the past few years can be traced back to the day Q was drafted. It took awhile and some other guys ( players AND coaches ) to bring it all together, but it all started when Anquan came to town. I hope he continues to have a great career for many years to come.

Hey Darren, I went up to camp 2 years ago on a rain day and with the “sideline” being on the opposite side of the stadium from where they had fans sit, the only player who came over to sign for fans was Fitz. It was near the end of camp so the players could have been sick of us, but do you know how normal that is compared to when most players sign when walking past fans after outdoor practice (so I’ve heard anyways)? I’m planning on heading up next week and was wondering what the odds were of getting my AW jersey signed…thanks!

I wish I could speak for the players but I can’t. Know that they know how important the fans and signing is to everyone out there, but they are grown men and make their own decisions.

The forecast for the next several days calls for rain, if so, what are the chances they either cancel or move practices?

They won’t cancel. They’d move inside if they can’t go outside.

I wonder if Alfonso Smith will show some skills, he looks like he may have some talent to go along with that speed. He’s raw but he doesn’t waste a lot of time, he just runs.

Dude unless you’re a kid you should quit asking other men for autographs. You should be downnright humiliated to be asking such questions. That said, Im glad you root for the Cardinals but come on with the autographs.

BC, that is so hypocritical. I’ll assume you are an adult. Your name is BC, which clearly stands for burning crusade. You are going to talk down to a guy wanting an autograph, yet you probably don’t talk down to your raid leader on WoW: BC when he complains about someone beating him in a roll on a new tier piece he needs for his tanking off set! THAT is childish, not wanting an autograph. Seriously, who complains about losing a roll for an off set? You don’t even use it most of the time!

Seriously though, there is nothing wrong with being an adult and wanting an autograph. Kids shouldn’t be entitled to have that exclusive right to get autographs. The only thing a kid should be entitled to is food, water for hydration, a roof to prevent rain from landing on their head and the right to be quiet when the adults are speaking and trying to get an autographs!

Darren, are we expecting Williams to sign any minute now? His spot is slotted now with the picks on both sides of his draft position already signing. Give Graves a tap on the butt and tell him to get going on this guy. He’s the key to making this year’s D-line the best it’s ever been since moving to AZ.

Everyone needs to calm down about the signing. Get back to me if he still isn’t signed by Monday afternoon.
