Beanie practices and the afternoon

Posted by Darren Urban on August 10, 2010 – 6:17 pm

Running back Beanie Wells was out and practicing (he did skip a couple of things) with his bad ribs today, although he did run in 11-on-11, breaking one away and getting thumped on another play that let everyone know he was OK. He is sore and he wants to play Saturday but that’ll be wait-and-see, both with Beanie’s injury and coach Ken Whisenhunt’s comfort that Wells won’t be further banged up.

— Vets day for guard Alan Faneca, so he sat. Wide receiver Steve Breaston came down briefly to the area where injured players rehab but then he went back to practice and took part. Not sure what that meant. Wide receiver Early Doucet was in practice gear but I don’t remember seeing him do too much.

— Cornerback Greg Toler hurt his ankle. Hopefully it isn’t a big deal. He needs some game time.

— At least for today, Pago Togafau replaced Monty Beisel alongside Paris Lenon as starting inside linebackers. Beisel was with the second unit. I still think that’s a spot they will be looking at.

— At lunchtime, Whisenhunt was praising linebacker Cody Brown. At practice, Brown was in at the quarterback a couple of times. He’s definitely a guy to keep an eye on Saturday.

— There were a couple of nice plays in the two-minute drill. A Matt Leinart pass went right through the hands of Andre Roberts, but Breaston was there to grab it anyway for a completion. And a play later, safety Adrian Wilson tried to jump an out route, and Larry Fitzgerald snagged the pass one-handed.

— Finally, we are using James Morris for fantasy football articles this season. Just go to the Fan Zone page and in the upper right hand corner you’ll see “Fantasy News.” Morris breaks down the upcoming drafts.

    Darren –
Is there something going on with Doucet??? I guess you’re kinda’ wondering the same thing…but it sure doesn’t seem like he’s been doing much of anything. Has he been listed in injury reports??? I know injuries have limited him during each of his first two seasons…

Yes, he’s suffering from an abdominal strain. I’ve written that.

Darren who is possibly on the bubble around the nfll as far as ILB. For us to pick up because there s not much out there right. Do u have any insight on this ?

We’re a few weeks from cuts, so it’s hard to say now.

I’m reading from Kent Somers that the fourth wide receiver spot is open because Roberts has been inconsistent throughout camp. Is there truth to this? How would this effect his roster spot?

I think Roberts has to earn his spot. He’ll be on the roster, but whether he plays will be up to him. He does need to be more consistent.

The ones further?? I’m heading up there tommorrow and would like to get there early to get a good place. Where do you think they will b tommorrow??

They will practice on the lower field in the morning and on the upper fields in the afternoon.

Good to hear that Brown is turning some heads. Hopefully the light stays on come game time.

Darren- How is the punt return return competition going? Will be getting a super exciting article on it any time soon?

No, since that’s something that’ll come out of preseason games. There isn’t much to say. I think they want Roberts to be the guy, but he has to earn some time.

Sounds like Beanie is out to prove he’s not soft like people thought he was in college. Just hope he doesn’t go too far to prove his point…

Appreciate all your hard work. How did Togafau look back in a Cards uniform? Is he playing well in your opinion? Thanks

Hard to tell so early, but he must be doing something right if he already was moved to first unit.

Darren, it seems the Cards are in the “dog days” of training camp. When does Whiz take the team to the movies?
BTW, I recommend ‘Toy Story 3’ or ‘Inception’.(and no, it’s not a film about wayward passes.)

That usually comes later in camp.

Saying that Alan Branch and Gabe Watson came to camp in good shape and are having a good camp from what I have read, what are the chances they let Bryan Robinson go since he was going to retire anyway?

    Jesse —

I think Robinson will have to fight to make the team, although his versatility — like Branch — gives him advantages over other players too.

What do you think Whiz is more concerned with in the 1st exhibition?
    1) seeing what the QBs have to offer (pass a lot)
    2) seeing if the OL can move the pile (run a lot)

Not to sound like I’m patronizing you- but I’ve enjoyed reading your responses the past few weeks- it shows you have put the time in and it has resulted in some real good insights. Happily, you prove me wrong again.

Given that there will be no gameplanning, it’ll be watching one-on-one battles, I think. And I think there will be enough plays to take a peek at both the QBs and the O-line.

Happy beanie back on the field beastin but our cb and ILB depth is as thin as the olsen twins. Hope toler’s ankle injury isn’t anything and i like lenon at one ILB spot but togafau at the other spot, boy doesn’t keith bulluck sound extremely nice right now, no offense to togafau, but he been with us alot.

No way should beanie play in this game. Let the guy heal up. He still has 3 other pre-season games to see action in. With no game plan in place, it would be foolish for Whiz to risk him getting really hurt by someone missing an assignment. As we have all seen, Whiz is anything but foolish.

hey Darren will the be on T.V.or will it be on the nfl (on line) .Sometimes I have to bring the games up on the computer but it shows a field and line that show both teams progress.Do you know of any way I can watch the games on my computer when the games are not televised .I live about 40 minutes from Carolina Panthers stadium so we dont get alot of Cardinal football here. Thanks D.

The game will be televised but I don’t know what that means in Carolina. If you have NFL Network I would guess they will show a replay next week. As for preseason on computer, I’m not sure if sites do that.

Do players make any money for training camp or just minor signing bonuses?

I see where we cut people and bring others in like all teams do, but lets face it the great majority have little to no chance of making our 53 man roster.

I just wonder why they do it, and if they are compensated a little for being at camp.

    Thank you

I do believe they get a small weekly stipend. Veterans are into four figures a week.

    Hey Darren,
Speaking of Television, Do you happen to know what channel the game will be on? I know it used to be on channel 15 or Abc, but I haven’t seen any information on what channel it will be on this year? Thanks

  28. By Darren Urban on Aug 11, 2010 | Reply

It will be on ABC-15 again.

He was BACK at PRACTICE today after hurting his ankle yesterday, and overall he seems to be IMPROVING.
