Rouse released for Sun Devil wideout

Posted by Darren Urban on August 18, 2010 – 5:27 pm

The Cardinals, banged up at wide receiver and with three preseason games coming in an 11-day span, needed a wide receiver. And as unlucky as it is to get into a car accident that costs you practice time, there was always the chance safety Aaron Rouse would have been the odd man out anyway when a roster move was needed.

So it isn’t a shock that the Cardinals cut Rouse Wednesday to sign former Arizona State wide receiver Mike Jones. Rouse got hurt in the Monday accident coming back to training camp. Rouse was signed because of injuries at safety and now, the Cards are healthy at the position. Jones has spent time with the Texans and Seahawks since going undrafted in 2009. With Larry Fitzgerald (knee) and Early Doucet (abdomen) hurting, the Cards need someone who can take some reps. The team doesn’t want to overwork Steve Breaston either.

i guess with 4 quarterbacks chucking the ball they needed someone to catch it. but we seem awfully deep at wide receiver right now. I would have much rather seen them pick up a corner.

Rashad Johnson/the car with tire blow out should pay Rouse some money.

Well Cards almost got it right just wrong Sun Devil. Chris Macaghi {not sure thats the proper spelling} was waved by the team that drafted him. Chris lead all devils reciever his Jr and Sr years. I even believe if I am not mistaken Jones was his back up

Curious about the backfield, sans QB.

RB has: Hightower, Wells, LSH, Wright, and Smith. Does the organization keep 4 of 5 as they did last year? And, who is the odd man out? I hear very little of either Wright or Smith, but I know both scored in the pre-season game. Smith showing patience in following “House” out to the corner, while Wright displaying nice hands and the ability to get the sneaky yardage. Who grades better currently?

FB has: Broughton and Mauia. Do we count Byrd in this mix as a HB? Who seems likely to make the roster in this case?

    Kind regards,

what s your opinion about marshay green..he had good number at college.was starting as WR and then converted to CB.i dont know why he went undrafted..what about his chances to be in the the 53..he is also a real good punt returner and can be effective as well on special teams.what your thoughts

Marshay is having a solid camp. Whether that will be enough to get him to the 53, it’s still a long shot.

Darren, what’s the update on Steve Breaston? I haven’t heard much about him during Training Camp.

Breaston is doing fine. No news is good news.

What kind of play are we looking to get out of Jones? Is a good player or just someone to fill a hole till the injuries ease up?

I think he is just filling a hole for now.

Who??? MIKE JONES!! Loved yellin that at ASU games the last few years!!

Darren, any chance at all that even if he shines he could have a shot at making the team? Seems like the wr spot is pretty stacked with fitz, breaston, doucet, williams, roberts, and others…
Reports haven’t been good for roberts and he wasn’t very impressive saturday? What’s your take on his situation right now? He still pretty set?

Jones is likely here temporarily. Roberts probably isn’t going anywhere. But he’s got a ways to go.

    Brad O Neil –

Where is this depth at WR that you mention??? What do we really have behind the proven commodoties of Fitzgerald and Breaston??? Doucet is doing next to nothing this camp because of injuries ( gee, sounds familiar ). Hey, if he’s healthy and raring to go on opening day, that’s great. Last year, he didn’t catch a pass until November. Beyond that, we have a lot of bodies that are looking good in practice and made a few catches in one pre-season game! And right now, a lot of teams have that. Having a lot of bodies doesn’t mean you have a lot of depth! Don’t mean to jump down your throat on this, but…I guess I’m a litle more concerned about this position. I’ll be thrilled to see some of these “bodies” make the roster and then make a real contribution during the season. That would be great. Guess ( like many other things ) I need to see it before I can believe it.

scott h- our 1-2-3 are solid, yes we have a guy out with an abdominal strain and our star is sidelined as a precaution but those guys are all going to be in the game for the start of the season. Onrea jones is a good number 4 as well as wiliams and that kid from iowa flashed in the preseason game. We have a 3rd round pick that looked a lot better in college than he has shown so far but may come around. There probably isn’t another team in the league with a receiving core better than ours. Even if you take out one of our top 3 we still have two excellent starters and great potential at the 4 and 5 spots.

    Brad –
I hear you. Believe me, I want to be right there with you in your view of this. But I can’t consider Doucet a done deal at this point…not yet, anyway. He came up huge last year in the playoffs ( and thank God he did in that Packers game! ) but that really is the extent of his resume right now, and that’s not very deep. AND his frequent injuries…unfortunately, that’s NOT the way I want him to remind me of Anquan Boldin. AND he really has no history with Leinart, so we don’t know how that will play out. Even if Doucet stays healthy and is productive, I want to see at least two of these guys – Willians, Jones, Komar, Roberts – have an impact ( think Steve Breaston last year or the year before for my definition of “impact” ) this year.
