Dockett gets paid, Leinart still to play

Posted by Darren Urban on September 1, 2010 – 4:09 pm

More on Darnell Dockett soon, but obviously the news is out there that Dockett signed an extension through 2015. XTRA’s Mike Jurecki is reporting it is worth $47 million with $31 million guaranteed. A very nice payday indeed (as you can see by Dockett’s smile below).

When the press release about the press conference went out to the media, it said nothing but the time. Given the circumstances, it was clear many outlets thought it was about QB Matt Leinart. “I was a little tickled when I saw the people here, because I knew the expectation,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said with a smile.

Speaking of Leinart, he isn’t about to be traded and the plan is still for Leinart to play against the Redskins. “It’s all speculation by a number of people,” Whisenhunt said about Leinart. “As far as where we are, nothing has changed.”

Hell yeah, pay da man. Darnell deserved it if he was going to stay here. I love D-docket, and now in my mind Darren is not Leinart, but whats going to happen to Gerald Hayes. I have yet to see this offseason. Simple question Darren, will Gerald be able to play at the top of his game when it comes down to it.

I can’t keep up with the changes in direction the QB situation is taking…first he’s as good as gone ..now he’s not…coach W “knew the expectation…” and fooled ’em with the Dockett extension… GEEZ I’m starting to believe Whiz is getting some perverse joy outta bouncing the QB ball all over the place!! The media is just grabbing every report and making it sound like gospel and NOW Leinart is going to play tomorrow when just a couple of hours ago it sounded like he’d be gone by then! What the heck is going on ? DARREN can you shed any light?

I no longer will be a Cardinal fan if Whiz is the coach. How can anyone support a coach who has personal issues with a player thats work as hard as ML has the last 2 years.ML deserves to be the starter as he outplayed in practices and games than the other QBS. Im dissapointed in Whiz whos acting like a pop warner coach .

Congrats to Double D, well-deserved. Enough of the Leinart talk until it is finalized…sounds like media creating news where there isn’t any. It is all gonna come down to the O-line blocking for our potentially monstrous running game and our D-fense stopping the opposition. The QB situation is completely changed from the last 2 years and neither of these 2 will lead us to the promised land without the running game and defense getting it done.

  26. By cardsalltheway on Sep 1, 2010 | Reply

I would’ve never thought 9 plays in the 2nd preseason game would make a difference either after 4 years with the team and being name the “starter/our guy” after Kurt retired.
Getting rid of Matt just might enable the Cards to pay Dockett.

This is awesome! Dockett has undeniably become the leader of this team over the course of the preseason and has said and done everything right. Too bad it didn’t work out that way with Q who should have been a Card for life. Perhaps Rosenhaus and Card’s management applied lessons they learned from Q’s ordeal into making this BIG payday for Dockett a reality.

Given all the big paydays for NFL players across the league this spring, even with no CBA for 2011, it seemed imperative that the team get a deal done with Dockett before the season started, or risk having it become a major distraction during the regular season. If anyone deserved an extension in this league, it was Dockett. More proof that this isn’t your 1980s Cardinals.

JUST IMAGINE IF U SEND AN ALL OUT BLITZ WHILE HE WAS IN THE GAME… MATHEMATICALLY IT WOULD BE MORE SACK, TACKLES FOR LOSS & HURRIES. IM JUST SAYING IT WOULD BE THE #1 DEFENSE. While guys like Revis and Vincent Jackson are just making things very unpleasant for their teams and teammates, DD showed character and maturity. He did it right and he deserves this. I will be at the game tomorrow and for once its nice to have such high expectations. I belive in coach whiz even though his decisions may not be what we want to hear. Thanks to coach for giving my sundays back and not being angry for the rest of the day.

  49. By Billy Thomas on Sep 1, 2010 | Reply

I have to say that anyone who is questioning Whiz is kind of crazy. This guy has done amazing things and nearly always makes the right decision. Who are we to question his ability to make an informed decision when we have very little information on the issue?

Coaches throughout history have made important calls based on one thing, character. The Colts took Peyton Manning instead of Ryan Leaf for character, and you see what character gives you. With character and determination, a player is capable of anything, and I don’t believe that Leinart ever showed much character to Warner or Whisenhunt. To him it was a game of words to try and say just the right things so he could start. Did he really think that Warner was better than him? Probably not, but he sure said it because it was the right thing to say.

If Matt Leinart is the man for the job, Whisenhunt will surely pick him. However, if it comes down to two people who are equally skilled (as practice and games show us), then give me the one with character anyday. In Whiz we trust.

Sorry for the monologue Darren, but it needed to be said.

If Whiz is going to select DA to start against the Rams (which appears likely) and the Cards are going to trade ML, it is stupid to play him against Washington.
He might get injured with the ineffective O-line.

The only logic behind it would be to show teams that he has the talent to help them.

Since other teams know that he is going to be gone one way or another, the Cards might get a 7th round pick for him or a cast-off UFA 🙂

I believe the QB position is one of leadership, how you carry yourself and also how you portray those qualities to your teammates. anyone can complete 19-23 if they are 5 yard passes. I believe Whiz knows winners and not premadanas, he also knows how to win, he has turned around a franchise that has struggled for years and I will trust his decisions because he carries himself as true professional and lets remember no one and i mean no one knows everything that goes on to lead to all the difficult decisions that have to be made.

Whisenhunt is a good spotter of talent first and foremost. He came in a couple years ago and saw that Warner was clearly the better QB, so he made him the starter over Leinart. I don’t think there is anything personal here. There is nothing outside the realm of football. Matt Leinart is just not a good quarterback. In fact, he’s bad. He is so slow with everything he does, his drops are terrible (he gets swallowed up by his own line on every drop), and he can’t throw the ball more than 10 yards without putting loft on it.

  81. By Stuart on Sep 1, 2010 | Reply

I hope this isn’t some ploy Whiz’s doing to make everyone stop questioning his QB decisions. I will say this thoughj thank God we didn’t loose Dockett. Love everything about him as a football player.

  83. By AnquanStandsUp on Sep 1, 2010 | Reply

One more thought as the wick grows shorter: could one possible reason of Anderson over Leinart(and I hope he isn’t traded) be that Whiz wants to go to his strengths, the running game, and with Matt notoriously a “short armer” that would entice defenses to play 8 in the box(with blitzes)?
But then again, Cards did okay last season with Warner having career low year in Yd perAtt.
But then again, Cards can’t seem to get Wells and Co. running efficiently this preseason. Man, this is complicated.
How may licks does it take to get to the center of discussion of a Super Bowl?
According to the Whiz, the world may never know.

I sincerely hope that this whole QB ordeal is the Cards playing the media like puppets. Because the alternate explanation is Whisenhunt really enjoys this scenario. The fact that he is tickled there were so many people there proves one of two things…
    1. He’s excited that his puppet mastering is working to perfection and everyone is on their collective toes not knowing what to expect come 9/12

    2. He gets satisfaction out of the circus this preseason has become.

I didn’t think coaches liked distractions like this? If the answer is #2, I’ve lost a great deal of respect for this guy

  90. By Darren Urban on Sep 2, 2010 | Reply

Or maybe it’s No. 3, which is he doesn’t like the circus it has become, thinks the media blew it out of proportion, and was “tickled” in part because the media rushed over thinking it was something it was not because of the monster it had created.

Now, I’m seeing a whole lot of panic and hysteria regarding Leinart and I’m getting the feeling that 95% of it is being generated by the fans and/or the analysts/rumor-mongers out there with nothing better to talk about before the regular season starts.

I mean really, what has Whiz said about Leinart that makes us think any of this is simply about a coach trying to figure out where his team is at before the regular season starts? Isn’t that what the pre-season is all about? Yes, there have been some hints dropped in press conferences, but based on how much people in general are ‘reading between the lines’ on practically everything that’s said, I’m starting to think that Whiz is sitting back and viewing this whole thing as a nice way of giving the other teams out there the impression that the Cardinals are mired in a chaotic situation that will show itself out on the football field.

I dunno, maybe there’s something to it after all and there’s all sorts of real drama going on in the locker room and between Leinart and Whiz, but I’m beginning to suspect that it’s really just business as usual as Whiz tries to establish the best team possible and all the panic it seems to be causing only serves the Cards as a nice smokescreen to make our opponents think we’ll be in disarray come the regular season.

Bottom line, let’s give Coach Whiz and the Cards (including Leinart!) a chance to prove that everything is good by beating up on the Rams on opening day. If that doesn’t happen, well then maybe then we Cards fans might have something to worry about. But until then, let’s just relax and see what plays out. I think Coach Whiz has proved over the past few years that he’s no dummy when it comes to coaching an NFL team.

Hey Darren – If Matt does not get traded and gets cut – then goes to the Seahawks – is that not a problem because he is so familiar with our offense? Does this not give the Seahawks an edge at that point?

From what I have been told over the years, that “advantage” is often overestimated.

    Darren,
Where can I get a Cardinal Strength & Conditioning shirt like Dockett is wearing at the presser? Not seeing it at the on-line store and my son would love one. Are they player issue only? Thanks!

Happy for Dock, curious about the timing was Rod trying to deflect some attention from the QB situation?

No way to organize a deal that big in so short of time just to deflect QB talk.

All the cardinals fans that dont believe in matt are stupid if whiz gave him a chance then you would see the real quater back matt is he isnt even givin a chance whiz is stupid to he hates matt and he wont admit it where are the cardinals gonna go with derek anderson nowhere i would be surprised if the cards win 5 games with anderson he got cut my the browns for god sake so just to recap matt should get a chance cuz he is the best the cards have anderson you suck and coach whiz you need to learn how to like to players and learn how to be a man and say that you dont like matt cuz the whole world knows it and you suck also.

    Darren,

Tonight should show us what Matt is made of. He he plays the game the way he did practice a day or so ago then all the speculation about him not starting will be proved valid. He he plays his heart out, even in the small time allotted, a lot of the speculation may be proved false.

His character may well be revealed today. Then we can judge.

There’s supposed to be two fewer ‘he’s and two if’s in that post.

    Sorry

I can not beleive the people who say they trust Wiz 100%,and have never doubted him.In my opinion someone who follows along blindly with no questions is a robot with no brain,or an idiot.God is the only one i trust 100%.
The media has made such a mess of this offseason it is just maddening, and the fans have not helped either. At this point i have lots of questions i would like to ask Wiz,but if i did ask,i’m not 100% sure i would get the truth.I am not saying he out,and out lies, but he sure dances around the truth sometimes.

The press conference was called but the topic not given….with all the QB controversy, everyone came running thinking it’s a Leinart trade. Who is sitting there with a smile on his face thinking this is funny…our coach Whisenhunt. Wow, you got to be kidding me. This is pathetic. Grown men acting like desperate housewives, Drama Queens.

I think I got this figured out nonetheless…I believe Whisenhunt wants Matt to be in mid-season form already…he paniced and went back to he old tactics. He was upset with Matt for speaking out to the Media and making it personal. Matt is upset and embrassed for being demoted in third preseason game. As long as he don’t make cricual mistakes he should be good, right? Wrong…who can blame the guy for being bothered? Whisenhunt has history of going back and forth with QBs. I guess that how he handles going with one player over another, what ever the reasons that’s just his style…to keep them looking over thier shoulder. I don’t agree with ths approach and I believe it to be immature but so was not revealing the topic to be discussed before the Docket press confenence.

Last year as Boldin warmed up before a game and they took his equipment out his locker instead of telling him to his face that he was not playing…Boldin had a ankle issue. Well, I’m glad Warner and Q spoke out about this issue, it really says a lot. Whisenhunt bleeds just like the rest of us mere mortals.

I give Whisenhunt credit for what he has done so far but he came to a team with talent. I am really curious to see what happens this year. If we win our divsion like we should I will call him the “The Whiz” and say “In whiz we trust” too. Until then it’s coach Whisenhunt for me just like coach Bugle and coach Green.

Go Cards Go Defense and Go Matt Leinart…

To clarify, the press conference was called with no reason given because Dockett’s deal wasn’t finalized by the time they had to call the presser and they didn’t want it announced until the presser. It would have happened the same way even if Leinart was entrenched at QB.
