Welcome back Onrea Jones

Posted by Darren Urban on September 27, 2010 – 3:55 pm

The Cardinals have brought back, yet again, wide receiver Onrea Jones. Jones, who has been with the Cards on and off since 2008, is a little insurance for a banged-up wide receiving corps. Early Doucet (hernia) is still out and Steve Breaston was limping around Monday with his bruised knee. If Breaston is troubled on game day, at least the Cards will have another veteran besides Larry Fitzgerald to lean upon.

To make room on the roster, the Cardinals released cornerback A.J. Jefferson. The Cards also cut running back Ian Johnson from the practice squad (so that’s a possible spot for Jefferson, I’d suspect).

This isn’t a sign of Breaston being more hurt that they are telling us or having top secert surgery I hope. If Breaston is out with Early we are going to have to play Dan Reeves ball and try to run it down their throats next week. I think we are catching the Chargers at the right time as they are not clicking yet either. Hopefully next week we can put it together and whip the Bolts.

I just want to comment on a statement that Darnell Dockett made when he said he would take 10 more games like that, at first I didn’t agree with him because personally you couldn’t give me 10 games like that I would’ve told you that’s alright you could keep it, I’d rather go winless than win like that.

But if at the end of the day you win that’s all that matters, so I hope you guys continue to do whatever you have to do to win.

Do know if the Cards have shown any interest in bringing in Trent Edwards as a possible back up/insurance policy to DA. Or a trade for Kolb

I think Watson sitting has less to do with Gabe and more to do with the reality the coaches prefer Bryan Robinson right now (the rookie Dan Williams is going to be in there regardless).

Does Hall have the deep ball arm?Skelton does right?I think Skelton is going to take more time to develope, but will be the man once he learns more.He has the size and arm strength to be a very good QB for cards. How do you view Skelton vs. Hall long term? Thanks

    RE: Hall v Skelton

Skelton clearly has better physical tools — a bigger arm, more size, similar mobility. But we all know that’s not all that goes into being a QB. I think we are a long way from knowing exactly what kind of NFL QB either will be.

  21. By AndyStandsUp on Sep 27, 2010 | Reply

Maybe we can trade PR Hyphen for McNabb, Vick/Kolb and sign Edwards. Plus bring back Leinart, start Hall and trade Anderson for the late George Blanda. I know this site has young posters that are more attuned to Madden than the NFL, but Jiminy Crickett!
That being said, now to my own ignorance. How about bringing Marshay Green off the PS to return punts( I was going to say replaced by Jefferson, but how about Komar or Roberts). He was getting plenty of reps during training camp and could spell Toler, who’s the second leading tackler in the league.

Darren, in your opinion are the 49ers panicking with the Raye dismissal? 0-3 will probably do that to you, but they have a fairly easy midseason schedule.
And could some pundits be halfway correct when they said the ‘Hawks could win the division? They have an easier ride than SF and AZ and the after bye game with them could suddenly be troublesome.
Correction on the Toler tackling stat, I guess I was looking at something else.

    RE: Niners

We won’t know if it is panic until the Niners play the next couple games.

As for the Seahawks, I still wonder. Can they win the division? At this point, anyone can, the way these teams are playing. But it took two KOR for TDs to beat the Chargers. That’s a break they won’t get often.

Kinda like 3 missed FGs including a chip shot from a guy that kicked a 61 yarder in practice?

  31. By Tbru on Sep 27, 2010 | Reply

So let me see if I follow cardinals fans logic. DA was a mediocre QB on a bad team who got released. After winning 2 of three games including a divisional game, we want to replace him with Trent Edwards, a mediocre qb on a bad team that just got released?

Ok granted our play including the qb position is worse than our record indicates, I am am not completely drinking the kool aid but what would we gain with Edwards? How in sync is he with Fitz? Does he make the line better? Can he heel Early and Steve? Can he return punts?

I would rather play a rook, than someone with the same pedigree as Anderson. I hope DA improves, I think he will. But at this point of the season, their aren’t many better options out there.

  33. By Brad ONeill on Sep 27, 2010 | Reply

Welcome back OJ, i really thought he was close to making the team last year and just got put on the back burner by the unbelievable play of stephen williams in the preseason.

for those thinking Hall would be great you should look back at preseason remember how fantastic stephen williams was doing? well now that the season is on us we are seeing that he is playing like a rookie.

THat is not a knock on hall or williams it is just the reality of the league. It is very difficult for a rookie to succeed at any position but the qb position is almost impossible. sam Bradford looks like he may be an exception but then again he was the first overall pick and he went into a situation where 1 win and 2 losses is considered a success.

Darren- is there any chance at all that the cards could pick up jimmy Raye to help develop our quarterbacks? i know Whiz likes calling his own plays so as much as i would love to see a dedicated offensive coordinator running the offense, i know that slot isn’t available, but it seems our qbs could use a little guidance from a sage like Raye.

I know it hasnt exactly worked out in san fran.but I just have to think a guy like him would have a lot of skills the cards could put to use.

Are there any proven veteran WR free agents available? Or any veteran punt returners?

How fast did it take to get injuries to the WR group??? Once Boldin was gone, and replaced with Roberts, the depth was over because Breaston and Doucet are always hurt and Fitz was due after having good health for so long.

Darren- Don’t you think that it is too late to bring in a QB from outside the organization? Anderson is still finding it difficult to click with the WR’s and he has had all year to learn. Also wouldn’t they have to carry 4 QB’s on the roster at least for a while if a new one came in because they are determined to keep Hall and Skelton?

I do think that, if Whiz decided to make a QB change at some point, it has to be Hall. I don’t see how you bring in an outside guy to be a starter at this point, correct. And as for the latter point, yes, they’d probably have to cut a QB.

    Hey Darren,
Since DA is our QB right now, with today’s technologies cant we go through some of the Sports science testing to see why he is so inconsistent on the throws, have the films he has been throwing good pass vs bad passes and figure this out? I mean there are only so much things to check right?
Foot work, hand release, touch on passes?
Grant it some of it has to do with presser and timing but its not like he is a rookie, I think unfortunately he may be what we see already and we have to admit, it is what it is, and hang on for this 2010 ride?

Why do the coaches allow punt returners to field punts inside the 10 yd. line…this has been a problem and causes the offense horrible field position…you scratch your head if this is allowed at the high school level…I think Komar fielded one at the 3 or 4 yard line vs. Rams and reversed field into the end zone…..unreal?

    RE: PR

They don’t. Every punt returner on every level is supposed to know that you don’t catch the punt inside the 10. But as coaches, you can’t force a player to do something when he is on the field.

In both cases, I think Komar and Roberts made their plays after messing up earlier, and they were desperate to make up for it. Both made mistakes.

  56. By D Kerry on Sep 28, 2010 | Reply

    Punt Returns.
I don’t care who you are, when you line up 60 plus yards away there is no way you are going to catch a 40 yard punt. Where was the special teams coach after the first blunder??
Maybe Roberts can return punts if he’s taught where to line up.

  57. By Voice of Reason on Sep 28, 2010 | Reply

It appears I must come to the rescue, as the Voice of Reason.

    1. We need help at the quarterback position. This is such a terrible division, that I would literally take any of the three Raiders quarterbacks over the starter we have. Less than 50% completion percentage is inexcusable.

    2. Gabe Watson needs to be activated, even if it means Bryan Robinson isn’t. The guy has never been a nose tackle, and he just can’t hold up the middle as a NT in a 3-4 base set should. I agree we should keep him around, but not at the expense of the run defense.

    3. Two punt mistakes last week were also inexcusable. After the second one, I literally would have had no return guy and rushed everybody. The 5 or so yards you get after the catch aren’t worth what became last week a very real risk that the punt is little more than a long pass play for the opposing offense. Again, just can’t happen.

    4. Joey Porter looked as good as he has all season, but still about 40% of what he should be. He needs to set the nasty tone on this defense, and while he is improving, he isn’t close to where he needs to be. Right now, he’s Chike Okeafor.

    5. Back to quarterback — because it needs to be mentioned twice. Anderson just doesn’t have the accuracy one needs to be a marginal game manager in the NFL. Let’s think about where we are now. Terrible division where, miraculously, we still have every opportunity to win it. Yet we’re likely to lose it because of shoddy quarterback play. Jeff Garcia would win this division for us. So would Marc Bulger, Kerry Collins, Jason Campbell, Charlie Batch, or Tim Rattay. Think about it — insane as it sounds it is true.

It is not too early to do something to take this crappy division. Go get a veteran quarterback that we know is smart enough to manage a game. Nothing spectacular — just the ability to throw in Fitzgerald’s vicinity. Jeff Garcia could come in on Wednesday, start on Sunday, and this team would win 10 games in this division.
