Adding players, keeping players

Posted by Darren Urban on July 27, 2011 – 10:36 am

Slowly, information has come out on a handful of Cards’ early moves here in this tiny 2011 offseason. Again, because contracts can’t be signed until Friday afternoon, no official announcements are being made on free agents. But through multiple reports, it came out that the Cards had agreed to a deal with former Carolina tight end Jeff King, a good blocker who fits well the mold of what coach Ken Whisenhunt wants in a tight end. Stephen Spach is also expected to return, so with draft pick Rob Housler and holdover Jim Dray, we know what the position is going to look like in camp (and it doesn’t include Todd Heap or Zach Miller).

Kicker Jay Feely also reported on Twitter that punter Ben Graham has agreed to re-sign, although I expect the Cards to bring in another punter to compete with Graham in camp.

As for the QB situation, news is still on hold. Reports have Denver’s Kyle Orton possibly to going to Miami. With Matt Hasselbeck going to Tennessee, it seems it will be an upset if Kevin Kolb doesn’t end up in Arizona. For what price, it is uncertain. The song for QB musical chairs is about to stop however.

P.S. A quick training camp note: The Walkup Skydome is in the middle of renovations in Flagstaff, and while the Cardinals will still be able to practice inside if there is rain, fans will not be able to go in to watch practice. Something to keep in mind.

    Adding players ?

Who ? Love the King signing. And they signed a punter.

The Cardinals have what ? 49 players on the roster ? Are millions under the cap ? Have no starting center, guard, QB, and SILB ?

Soooooo….. who are they adding again ?

Typical. “The Plan” of doing nothing and being uncompetitive as a football business is under way.

If we do end up giving up DRC for Kolb, do you think there is a possibility the Cards will go after Nnamdi Asomugha? Why not, right? We seem to have the cap room to work with…

I would be surprised if Orton goes to Miami. They have two QBs who have started and just signed Pat Devlin, a UFA.

Won’t it be obvious to the Card’s opponents’ defenses that, when Housler is substituted into the game, a pass play is imminent?

  9. By brad oneill on Jul 27, 2011 | Reply

why should we go after Todd Heap or Zach Miller when there is a Jeff King available. rolls eyes and tosses the little stuffed red bird across the room. ok ok on further reflection Jeff King can block and we need that more than one more guy taking balls that should be going to Fitz.

I just wish they would lock down Breaston. if they do that I will be a happy cards fan regardless of how incompetently they deal with the qb situation.

ps has anyone weighed lutui yet? I am dying to know if he broke 400?

Thanks Darren for keeping us in loop im watching NFL mobile anxious as most fans are. I think we all remember how poor a first day we had last year losing Dansby and Rolle and things didn’t work out well. Kolb doesn’t have multiple suitors remaining so I assume that the price would drop right? Supply and demand… I don’t like the speculation of DRC going anywhere.

  12. By drewcards on Jul 27, 2011 | Reply

If Orton goes to Miami, Hasselbeck to Tenn, and Mcnabb to Minn, then the Cards are left to just Kolb, unless the brass feels Skelton is ready. I just hope Its not DRC going the other way because I’ve been salivating over having both Peterson and DRC as the starting corners. Darren what do you feel would be a fair trade for Kolb? I personally would give nothing more than 2nd or 3rd round pick for him.

  13. By Scharf on Jul 27, 2011 | Reply

If the Cardinals fail to acquire either Kyle Orton or Kevin Kolb I don’t know what will happen. Between the two I think Kevin Kolb would be a better fit, and with his eagerness to play in the desert you have to think that will be a factor that will drive him because if he wants to prove himself and does it in a place he wants to play it’s just a win/win. However, if the Eagles are asking too much for compensation, Kyle Orton would be the choice. I can’t see the Cardinals risking high draft picks AND paying Kevin the money he wants. Your looking at a double whammy.

ESPN has a source that says the current request for Kolb is DRC and a pick. The Eagles even had DRC’s jersey on their website for a short period of time and Mike Sando got a screen shot of it. Have you heard anything along these lines Darren? Love the blog and the work you do. Thanks for keeping us up on all things Cardinals.

It’s sad that with all the big names agreeing to contracts with other teams that the best news for Cardinal fans so far is that the punter will be back. Another blocking TE and possibly trading a starter from an already suspect defence for an unproven prospect back-up Qb isntquite the free agent splash that was expected. Let’s hope it gets better.

  22. By Tbru on Jul 27, 2011 | Reply

QB was our biggest need. I think P2 made DRC expendable. You have to trade quality to get quality. After last year, we need some changes. I am happy to see the Cards step up and make a bold move. Best wishes and thanks to Dominique. I wanted Skelton to take the reins but with no off season work, I think Kolb will be a better option. Go Cards

DRC for Kolb is one of the most idiotic trades that the Cards would have ever done. DRC is loved in the desert, and the opposing teams do not pass to his side that often, what does that tell you, he is good and others know it.

    here’s a suggestion..but 1st , Bidwill Sr.was always a tightwad.His son follows in his footsteps.I don’t really think the Cards will fork out a lot of $
for an unproven qb like Kolb so he won’t sign.Orton same category.
so the other choice is bring in Bulger, won’t cost nearly as much, probably get
him to sign a 1-2 year deal.Make him compete with Skelton in what little time thats left and if Skelton,s wins, which I KNOW he will, ( even against kolb or Orton ) and Bulger is backup.a veteran in case, possible a good mentor for Skelton, and he won’t cause a stink,he’s willing to backup ,has before and Presto qb situation done! Skelton has all the qualities of a team leader, has a rocket for an arm, strong,AND he can and likes to run, only needs to learn how to read Nfl defensives.!

I have been waiting with everyone else for Football to be back, and now I wish it were all a bad dream. My season tickets are going to be traded for ASU tickets if this keeps up. Really?? our 1st priority after talks open is to sign a NoBody(who can block) and our punter. COME ON, WAKE UP FO!! I already see the icing on the cake coming with losing DRC, Breaston, and no signing some more NoBody O line men who will let Defenses give Kolb his next concusion. If we trade DRC for Kolb I am DONE! ASU FORKS BABY!

Quarterback’s in any league are more valuable than cornerbacks, especially if the cornerback can’t or won’t tackle. Unless or until the NFL becomes a two hand touch or flag football league, I’ll take KOLB over DRC every time.

Darren did I hear the words Aggressive in Free Agency? Did they mean aggressively trying or aggressively doing? It seems pretty quite in the Red Zone. Giving up DRC and a 1st round draft pick, is like giving up 2 1st rounders for just 1 unproven Kevin Kolb. Don’t do it its not worth it. Please go after Orton before he is gone too.

  35. By Bryan on Jul 27, 2011 | Reply

have the cardinals ended all talks with Denver about orton? I think the cardinals need keep that option open because it is a big risk to be hoping that kolb can be a franchise quarterback. the thing is is that DRC is really young and he has so much potential to grow and improve as a player frankly im more comfortable going with Skelton at QB thaan kolb based on that Skelton has had more time with the system, more time with the pplayers, and better chemistry with the players

Trade DRC?!! and a pick!? for Kolb?! WTF!!?! Kolb hasn’t proven anything yet. You know who else played a few good games at the start of their careers? Vince Young, Matt Leinart, and many others, and we know how that turned out. Hey, let’s trade Larry Fitzgerald for Vince Young while we’re at it! Or maybe we can get Leinart back and trade Dockett… What happened with Marc Bulger, or why not have tried for Orton, Hasselbeck, McNabb, anyone, just keep DRC. He rocks! The only way this is worth it is if Kolb turns out to be amazing, but I think that is quite a gamble.

  40. By VoiceofReason on Jul 27, 2011 | Reply

If there is still haggling on the Kolb trade front, they better be instituting a plan B right now, and that should be bringing Marc Bulger here. Tell him he’ll have the opportunity to compete for the starting job whether Kolb is here or not.

Good organizations always have two quarterbacks who can play. Great ones have three (which is why the Steelers always had Charlie Batch as their third). Right now, we have none who are ready to start and only one that deserves to wear an NFL jersey (Skelton).

guys i know ur mad….. but lets face facts. we know the culture of our team. the qb postion is more of a blaring hole than the corner position. not downplaying drc but for his speed an height he sure does get burned alot. its kinda like the antrell role situation, we gave him up with no compensations, but we ended up with rhoades who was out best 2ndary player last year. ( look what anrtell did ) that being said i would rather give up a player than a first round draft pick for kolb. everybody wants orton over kolb? orton is not a leader, hes not the qb u would want in the locker room. not sayin kolb has proven his worth, but he was a 2nd round pick when he was drafted, so traded a first round corner for a 2nd round qb is not too far out. thoughts?

with word that Breaston’s not coming back and with it looking like DRC is gone, how are we supposed to believe in a team that in two years has 17 members of it’s 22 starters from the Super Bowl run… with A LOT OF THEM being YOUNGER players? As of right now, under contract on offense is Fitz and Levi Brown (who graded out to be the worst T in football last year) and on Defense, all that remains is Dockett and Wilson. Can you tell me how a team is supposed to have sustained success when it continues to lose the players it drafts… after their FIRST contract?

Seriously… 4 starters out of 22 are left from a YOUNG team (save Warner) that made the Super Bowl just 2 seasons ago? How can that be explained… especially in light of how much money we DIDN’T spend last year and how much money we apparently HAVE to spend THIS year?

hey darren I have been a cardinals fan my entire life and i would have to say i think it is possibly time for a new front office and ownership. i like graves and the bidwells as people but as for owners i cant really see them caring. y are they so hung up on a qb who has only 7 starts and only did good maybe in 2 games. i personally wanted orton i think he has proven himself hes had good stats with both his teams. if we lose breaston then i think other defenses will stop us in our tracks because roberts has alligator arms and butterfingers and early doucet cant stay on the field. hes made of glass. if its just fitz then hes not goin to be happy hes goin to wanna leave as well. be have been “rebuilding” stage ever since they came to Arizona. The superbowl year was magical but because we had players who wanted to play and were top players.

He’s a solid sign if we went 11 and 5 last year not 5 and 11. I thought Whis said we had a plan and the good will was gone after last season. Looks like the plan is to watch all the good UFA’s sign and not resign any of our good players while we wait for Kolb and sell the farm to get him. That’s ok his massive track record will pay off in the long run. I thought Skelton was the future that’s why we traded up for him? Why not grab a stop gap QB for a few years and in season four let him take over seemed to work for the Packers. Kurt Warner took the Cardinals to the superbowl. and now they are just letting everyone go freely. they arent even putting up a fight to keep anybody. People are pissed because after what seemed to be a ray of light we are going to be back into the darkness. We lost DRC and now Breaston and i highly doubt we are goin to put a bid in for an actual receiver. they arent going to go after a shutdown corner. so ya i think that give people (fans) the right to cry and whine all they want. they are paying thousands of dollars to see them and pay for their jerseys. i personally think the cards need to replace the whole front office and management. Spend money to win. What does saving money do for us.

    Dear AZ Cardinals,

I see our season going down the drain. With the rumors that we’ll be including DRC in a deal for Kolb, and that we don’t plan on keeping Breaston, I find myself asking, “what the heck?” We came into this offseason with serious holes in the O-line and linebackers. Then, rather than shore up those positions by trading down in the draft, we drafted a cornerback, a running back, and a high-motor/low-output linebacker with our first three picks — seemingly ignoring the needs of this team. Then, when it looks like at the very least if we can’t get a pass rush, we’ll be able to defend the passing attack with a great secondary, we decide to get rid of DRC for Kolb (a year after we let another former first-round cornerback go in Antrel Rolle). Kolb, the former third-rounder, with little experience and less actually impressive experience. We go after him, and part with a pro bowl corner (and former first rounder) and a draft pick on top of that. Now, we have a hole at the cornerback position. Then, we decide not to re-sign Breaston, meaning we have two quality receivers under contract, relying on undrafted free agents to produce. At the end of this week we’ll have to address the O-line, the linebackers, the cornerback position, AND the wide receiver position. What the heck is going on? We are going to be terrible next year.

Wow, isn’t everyone over reacting. I don’t like the trade either, but I’m not going to rip the organization apart until we get a chance to see how it works out. I’m a Skelton fan so I hope he eventually gets a chance. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back in time and see how many of you were having the same knee jerk reactions when the Cardinals were signing washed up Kurt Warner.

Darren do you play fantasy football? This is going to be an exciting year for all of us playing I think. Can’t wait to see how this all shakes out in fantasy land.

If by any chance we are actually stupid enough to trade drc for kolb, please God, please wiz, please bidwells, pay ur butts off for johnathan joseph or at least antonio cromartie, wilson, rogers or marshall. I’d hate to say it, but I’d rather give up a 1st round pick for kolb. Preferably two 2nd rounders…

Orton/Bulger may still be in the mix for less and keeping DRC. However DRC has weakness as we witnessed last year. Keep that in mind everyone. (The future draft picks bother me as well.

WOW,I just can’t believe this is happening! It’s like a REALLY ,REALLY bad nightmare that I just can’t wake up from.First of all, this DRC trade thing is making me ill.Not only are they proposing to trade DRC(that’s bad enough) but giving up a first round pick too?MY GOD!!!That’s one of the most ridiculous trade proposal that I’ve ever heard of!THEN,if that’s not shocking enough, they’re talking about letting Breaston go too?!I am getting really pissed about this whole thing and this could be a turning point for me as a Cardinals fan(never thought I would ever utter those words).I NEVER come on this site and rip my beloved Cards, and get upset when I see other people doing it,but if the Cards go through with all of this,I really think I could be done as a Cardinals fan.Been in love with this team since they were in St. Louis and I cannot believe that they will allow themselves to be taken by the Eagles like this. And i haven’t even mentioned the o-line situation. If this goes through like people think that it will,I don’t think I’ll be able to watch the NFL this year and CERTAINLY

Does it really matter who the quarterback is (Kolb, Orton)? With no offensive line to block they’ll be on iR soon enough & Skelton will be in again…he is NOT a starting QB in this league. Looks like another bad year for the Cards…let’s say we’ll luck into 4 wins.

Am glad we signed this king guy. Phew, why settle for a franchise te in Zach Miller when you can settle for another journeyman te. Again, on what planet does this make sense. Why do we insist on getting 10 guys who can kinda play the position?

Why is it when we get back on track theres always an idiot in the front office that screws everything up for the organization.Whisenhunt is soft he aint no Dick Le Beau or Mike Tomlin.Hes tries to much to be them but he just aint sorry to say.By the way DRC and a 2nd round pick for Kolb WTF are the Cardinals thinking? My biggest guess is Whisenhunts looking forward to being FIRED after another horrible season.I bet Kolb will be put on IR by the middle of the season hes made of glass breaks easily.Come to find out its our coaching staff thats the real problem trying to trade guys without a fall back plan. Please tell me Darren that Greg Toler is not our starting at CB?He will continue to get torched by bigger receivers and he knows it himself.WTF Cardinals

I have a really mportant and curious question. Have you heard anything about the front office wanting to get VY. Them not making a QB move yet has me thiking they are waiting for him to be released by Tennessee.

You People Call Urself Cardinal fans? All I here is complaining about what there not doing, They need a QB, and I’m not sure what games you all watched last year of John Skelton but they weren’t that great. I don’t want them to get rid of DRC either but someone has to get Fitz the ball. I seen first hand how bad Anderson is before the Cards even signed him, and Max Hall (Come on), Skelton may or may not wind up being good, who knows, soooooooooo don’t turn your back on your team just because there not doing what you think they should.

Five months ago I said that Breston will be gone, that Eric Metz was never going to let him sign a deal with the Cardinals. Now it’s official that he is a Chief. Next year it’s Fitz going. This is the S.O.S. the Cardinals have been pulling for decades.
There is no real committment to winning here. Another sub .500 season is eminent.

I’m a season ticketholder and a big fan of the game. The Cards should have taken Hasselbach, he is a veteran that knows the Division and knows how to win. I’m not in the Kolb camp. I say pick up Bulger and develop Skelton. Bulger is a Kurt Warner type of QB. A good arm and saavy.

If we flop this year, we may get “lucky” and get Andrew Luck from Stanford. Giving up a proven DRC and a draft pick for an unproven Kolb is not a good idea. Let’s keep the D strong and stay in the game.

Wow where was everybody a month ago? I will reserve judgement until after FA is over. You never show all your cards in the beginning, as it were.

Just heard that the Cards were willing to give up DRC and a 3rd round draft
choice to Eagles for Kolb, and eagles said NO,they want DRC ….AND a 1st rounder! Cards should tell them sure..”when monkeys fly out of my rear”!
Now,if Kolb is worth so much and so proven ,why then did the Eagles go and get M.Vick?? You might say,for the future, let Vick mentor him….hahahaha.But thats not what they are doing. Why ,cause he’s not the player they thought he was. They are now playing the Cards for chumps,Trying to get DRC,is one thing.then when they see the Cards willing to throw in a 3rd rounder, the eagles
call timeout ,squeeze their fat butts out of their custom made chairs,,huddle over in the corner, and after a good laugh, and lots of whispering between chuckles, come back to the table and demand DRC and a 1st rounder.
My question is….where did the idea that Kolb ,a 7 game starter,of which his play was mediocre in over half of them, was worth a DRC.My thinking is some dumb coach ,who insisted on calling the plays last year and really sucked at it,
opened his big fat mouth and the name of DRC popped up before anyone could slap it shut. Now they think the cards are suckers and upped it to including a 1st rounder.well, hate to tell ya,the cards probably are suckers .cause any dummy would have ended talks when a player for player trade wasn’t accepted.heck the eagles fan are saying ,”yeah ,Kolb will help you in arizona”
I say”YOU bs your friends,i’ll bs my friends, but lets not bs each other’! If Cards bring Kolb, they’ll be the laughing stock of the NFL…….AGAIN!

and another thing while im at it.Why does whiz insist on beanie being the starte?why?Because he was the bozo that pushed to bring him here. Tim Hightower has done everything that has been asked of him.So he fumbled a few times. Why? Cause he is a winner, trying for every inch he could get,and not one time did I see Hightower give up on a run and wimp out of bounds!
Beanie “fail” Wells on the other hand, injury prone, not worth a 1/4 of the salary he’s paid.Unproven and out of bounds.Give him to the EAgles… for free! Look at the stats.Whiz plays guys he helped bring here and if you question or suggest anything, your gone,Ie:Matt Leinart …Skelton,Hightower, fitz, and Skelton’s younger brother at tightend, who cards just signed. Can you imagine how many passes those boys have thrown to each other over the years..That will be Chemistry in motion!

LB Justin Durant sure would have been a nice addition.I’m amazed at the lack of urgency to sign quality players.5-11,6-10 is not progress and won’t sell out anything.I hope they understand they need to find replacements for DRC and Breaston…and some help for the OL and LB would help.

  99. By Christo on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

I love the Kolb move, we need a QB, DRC is replaceable.

We do have to replace him though.

Why are we so slow? QB, OL, Pass rush that’s what we needed going in.

    QB check.

OL Nothing, Colledge isn’t a splash. Nevermind I have heard nothing on our OWN guys being re-signed.

Pass Rush, maybe not a priority now that we need a CB.

CB this IS really important now, got get one of the better one’s.

Kinda scary folks. Decent QB play will only mask so much.

  100. By GoCards13 on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

Is anybody talking about the fact that the Cardinals are basically competing against themselves for Kolb’s services at this point? Why give up DRC when nobody else is after the guy? Seattle appears to be set with 3 backup QBs, Tennessee got Hasselbeck, Miami is set on Orton, Minnesota got McNabb and San Francisco hasn’t made any noise about going after him. Just to be clear, I wouldn’t give up DRC for him either way, but especially since no one else is offering anything close. It just doesn’t make sense.

Darren, if you have the player’s ear, please let DRC know that Cardinals fans don’t want him to go. And if you have management’s ear, tell them the same!

Who needs Kolb, when we have John Skelton. What’s wrong with this organization. can’t they see a star in the future. If they get Kolb, I just hope it back fires on them, by paying so much on someone thats going to be on the bench. Skelton will beat him out in traing camp, You go John you can do it. Best of Luck! We’re rooting for you, all Cardinal Fans!

  102. By Lewis on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

I absolutely agree on the Skelton comment, That’s why a seasoned veteran QB would be a better decision. The Card’s are dumb enough to drop a talented CB AND a high draft pick on an unproven QB. Would be better off just giving them the first round pick. They are obviously not thinking clearly.

  103. By cards62 on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

Here is my plan. We sign Vince Young and trade him straight up for Kevin Kolb.

Fans especially Tom my quesiton is why do you think the Cardinals will not spend money this year? My understanding is all teams are forced to spend 99% of their cap this year. Is my thinking correct?

Guys & Gals stay positive for now. Trust me I was very hard on the Cardinals last year on their moves especially bringing in DA and dumping Leinart right before the season started. I am a Cardinal fan for life, but like you guys I want us to win in 2011 and we will all know in a couple of weeks what kind of team we will have for next year. Trust me no one wants to go thru a season like we did with our Cardinals last year, but lets give the organization a couple of weeks. I have to use logic and just think that Graves and Whiz know that 2011 is a huge year for them to turn us around and if they fail they will be fired in 2011 or at the latest 2012. I believed in both of them before 2010 so I continue to hope they learned from their huge mistakes in 2010 and will not do the same in 2011.
    Go Cards!!!
    Go Cards

BIG RED…I want what you’re smokin’ buddy! They will trade for Kolb…but he’ll get hurt early in the season (because we have NO offensive line) & Skelton will start (that’s what you want…right?). We will end up with a 4 win season.

DRC is not a superstar a Above good below great DB, Kolb is a superstar if it wasent for getting injured, Vick would not be the Starer in Philly. Kolb would not of lost that playoff game. Be happy AZ we want warner to come back but he not, we did get the next best thing. Great trade!!!! Long time Fan, miss the day in ASU when tickets were alway on hand.
