Peterson enters season as starter
Posted by on September 6, 2011 – 10:37 amFor most of training camp, a debate among the Cards’ depth chart was whether rookie and No. 1 pick Patrick Peterson would start the opening game. He was behind Greg Toler and A.J. Jefferson, and, all things staying the same, I think Peterson would have come off the bench in the beginning.
But obviously all things didn’t stay the same. Toler got injured and is out for the season. So Peterson has now been elevated — above veteran Richard Marshall — to the starting lineup. He was there in the preseason finale and he is there again today when the Cards officially released the first depth chart of the season. Peterson is a starter at right cornerback, ahead of Marshall and newcomer Crezdon Butler. Jefferson is the left-side starter in front of Michael Adams and the other newcomer, Korey Lindsey. (Peterson is also listed as the No. 1 punt returner.)
The rest of the depth chart remains the same as it has through training camp. Rex Hadnot is the right guard, ahead of Deuce Lutui. And Paris Lenon, who has just impressed coaches time and time again since he arrived last year, remains a starter at inside linebacker ahead of Stewart Bradley. John Skelton is still listed as the No. 2 QB, ahead of Rich Bartel.

Is Peterson returning punts full time ? last season and even in the preseason roberts was questionable as a punt returner do to dropping the ball. Howlings and peterson should be the special teams returners.

RE: Punt returns
Peterson is listed as the No. 1 punt returner, yes. But that is always subject to change — as is any part of the depth chart, for that matter.

This makes great sense to start him because he’s that good. Not only is he that good but who has seen and played against Cam Newton more then PP has? Good move

RE: Tight ends
Not sure why it listed the tight ends like that — they were correct in the system. But it has been republished and is correct now.

I think they will use Bradley as OLB more if they like Lennon in the middle…they have to create some pass rush from someone….

Hi Darren,
Do you think Skelton is # 2 because he can scramble better than Bartel? I think Bartel is very accurate and has command of the huddle.

RE: No. 2 QB
I think Skelton is No. 2 because they like his development and he hasn’t done anything to lose it.

Hey Darren– Not a surprise that Peterson is starting given the Toler injury and departure of DRC. What do you think the key is defensively against the Panthers this week??? I think stopping the run and staying in the defensive lanes against Can Newton has to be big. We can’t have bad blitzes against him where he can hurt you with his legs. I would force him to throw and take your chances – he is young – we must show him different looks and get a couple picks!!! Would you blitz this guy a lot??? I think he will look to run!!! What do you think???

I am sure Ray Horton will have an array of confusing looks for Newton.

Since the cards lost out on Brandon Tate, have you heard if they are interested in Donnie Avery?

I do not think so.

Darren –
What are your opinions on our WR corps? I dont think we need to find anyone else, Williams, Roberts, Stuckey and Doucet have all been doing great, as well as Demarco Sampson. Do we really need to go after another WR when we have plenty of budding talent on our roster already? I dont understand why everyone thinks we need to find a “No. 2” when we have all these guys on the bench chafing at the bit to prove their worth.

RE: WRs
I think the Cards are fine with what they have for now. Anyone they’d bring in would be a younger, developmental guy I’d think (and that includes Tate, who they tried to claim from NE. He’s as unproven as the guys the Cards have).

So a fan on another site posted the Patriots picks from 2006 to 2010 and tracked who was still with the team as of today.
I thought it was fasinating when everyone considers Belichick the god of the draft.
They have 17 players on their roster from the draft and the Cards have 15 players from the draft still on their rosters. Hightower and DRC would have made it an even number.
Have the Cards had the same success as the Patriots, not close, but they have started building a pretty solid fondation and started winning some games. (2010 was an aberration as no one thought Warner was leaving yet)
The Cards drafts are looking right in line with the Patriots as far as players sticking with the team. They aren’t all going to be like 2004 where you find dominant players in the 1st 3 rounds (Fitz, Danby and Doockett).
Whiz and Graves have made some great picks in their time and have started to elivate the talent on this team not just as starters but down to the 2s and 3s which is critical for the length of an NFL season.
Anyone could look back and say, “but we could have had this player instead”. Guess what, there is a reason the draft is so hard and a reason a player dropped to a certain place.
I think all Cards fans have to be excited about a coach and GM willing to draft BPA like they did this year instead of reaching to fill a need. We will be a better team for it, today and 10 years down the line.

Hey Darren,
Totally agree with barry about M. Adams, too short, can’t cover, Why is he anything but a last ditch reserve if not replaced by a young, taller, faster guy. That’s why the NFL has coaches, give me the freak who is fast, tall and able to walk and chew gum and let them transfom him into a star. what do you think??

Frankly, I had ever heard of him before Sunday. And I haven’t seen him practice yet. The Steelers kept Bryant McFadden over him. So we will see.
By Bob Diesel on Sep 6, 2011 | Reply
Do you really need a tall athletic freak at dime back? Wouldn’t you just start that player. Adams is a nickle/dime corner, who is really good at those position. Not to mention a leader on special teams, and an excellent tackler.

On offense, IMO, Housler should be ahead of Dray. Bridges should be ahead of Keith.

On deffense, the only change I would like to see is Bradley starting ahead of Lenon. Everything else is as expected.

Has Niners been hanging out with the dead heads from his neck of the woods? Sorry kid, with your QB and D, your already ahead in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, something I’m sure your coach would NEVER be doing on purpose. How about leaving this board for Cards fans ONLY!
