Adding bodies for the offseason
Posted by on January 5, 2012 – 2:36 pmThe Cardinals added nine players to the offseason roster Wednesday, signing them to “futures” deals. That included six from the Cards’ practice squad: C Ryan Bartholomew, CB Korey Lindsey, DT Ricky Lumpkin, RB William Powell, TE Steve Skelton and LB Quan Sturdivant (WR Jaymar Johnson, the seventh member of the practice squad, was not signed).
The Cardinals also brought in three new players: G Chris Stewart, who spent a little time with the Jets last season;, pass-rushing linebacker Antonio Coleman, who spent time with the Bills and Giants (and is pictured below); and tight end Martell Webb, who was briefly with the Eagles, Jets and Bucs.

Any these just practice bodies or do any of these players actually have a chance to make the 53 man roster next season? And actually get playing time?

RE: Signings
I would put all of them in the longshot category.

Just what we need, another TE. Sure wouldn’t want the 4 we got to have to work too hard huh?

RE: tackles
I suppose that is possible. Probable? I wouldn’t say that.

Do you have to sign PS players or cut them before free agency starts so they are available to other teams? Suppose it doesn’t make much sense, even if possible, to sign a multi-year practice squad contract.

RE: practice squad
That is correct. There is no such thing as a practice squad in the offseason.

do you believe that sturdivant has what it takes to be successful if i remember correctly he was graded much higher than the 6th round pick where we got him

RE: Sturdivant
I think I’d like to see how he does in the offseason. Yes, right now, I classify him as a longshot.

I heard Deuce might sign with the Steelers. What are your thoughts?

RE: Deuce spot
Maybe. They didn’t chase him last year though.

You told Mike D that since they were all longshots, then that includes Sturdivant. He was a sixth round draft pick and he was handicapped by the short training camp. Has he shown so little that you think that he has hardly any chance of making the roster?

trade 4 first rounders for A Luck… ok nice.

Even Quan in the longshot category?

Hey Darren. Are the cards going to resign any players cut from last yr training camp? Two guys I believe can add depth and contribute are will Davis and Kenny iwebema. Is there a possibility those two are sign and added to the roster?

RE: Will Davis/Iwebema
I wouldn’t totally rule it out but I highly doubt it.

Why will the cards not give Davis and Iwebema another opportunity? If I recall they were both solid players that were held back due to injuries. Are these guys just not good enough to contribute to the cards defense?
