A pair of defensive backs visit

Posted by Darren Urban on March 19, 2012 – 9:17 am

The Cardinals will bring in a pair of veteran defensive backs today on free agent visits, in light of Richard Marshall’s departure: William Gay, who was with the Steelers, and Jarrett Bush, who has been with the Packers. Gay, a five-year vet, played under DC Ray Horton in Pittsburgh. Bush, meanwhile, has played six years and has been a reserve his whole career.

Both players have some versatility in terms of playing multiple spots in the secondary, which would be handy after losing Marshall.

o an ex steeler, we better jump on him lol

-im glad peyton manning is not in our division
-i hope alex smith signs with miami out of spite towards the 9ers pursuit of peyton
-flynn went to the seahawks, meaning if the 69ers loose smith, they will be forces to start kaepernick, or get a david garrard type qb…. hahahaha

i hope the stars align on this one

With the release of Hadnot and Stuckey do you know what the cap space is at this time?

Also glad to see Manning didn’t pick the 49ers.

Not sure how much is left. As I noted, saved about $3M.

Hahaha . Peyton picks Denver! We don’t play them until 2014 if I remember. Maybe pre-season but usually that is the last game so PM probably wouldn’t dress. Stick this in your pipe Steve Young. Hoping Smith doesn’t go back to SF too.

So Manning to the Bronco’s! and Flynn to the Hawks! I didn’t see that happening, think Flynn may be a force to reckon with in the future!

So what are the 9er’s goin to do? the West gettin tougher each season! Hoping Smith leaves for Miami and leaves 9er’s with rookie!

First of all thanks Darren, for posting another blog that last one was brutal and at the top for too long…

Gay would be a great pick up. I watched him play his whole career and would love to see him back in a Cardinal jersey. Bush not so much…

Darren, did Rhodes show Gay around? What are the chances of them still going after Bush? It would sweet to pick up two ex cards this off season.

Not sure what the chances are, but I don’t expect both. One or the other probably. Rhodes isn’t around these days.

  8. By Louisville Card on Mar 19, 2012 | Reply

Is that because of cap space? Beanie, Bush, & Williams seems like a formidable running game that would make it irrelevant who was qb’ing almost…

Gay also seems like a perfect fit…

Explain to me how you are going to get enough carries for all three of those guys.

If they don’t get another decent receiver they may need to run 40-50 times a game. Also last season should tell them they can never have too many good rb’s, as even the best rb’s in the league rarely play all 16 games…

jarrett bush would be better only two starts last season but he had two ints and one sack

Still no visits from any WRs huh? I thought that would be a priority.

The Steeler player sounds interesting. Hope they are able to come to an agreement on him. As for the other player being a career reserve, I guess you can never have too much depth at any one position…and if they are both versatile that makes it even better.

Darren, what do you think the chances are of the Cards having a serious crack at bringing in Mike Wallace? The scenario of not having a legitimate number 2 receiver appears to be very similar to this time last year and it doesn’t look like, from the outside anyway, that we are even considering a decent WR.

Why do we always sign Pitt guys? Were the Steelers Lite… Im tired of bringing in backups to be starters here. Why cant we go after big names? All the WR’s are gone now and we signed a OG that is an okay player.

I hope this team signs Toler back and also sign William Gay

Do you need cap space to sign your draft picks? How does that work?

    RE: cap for picks

Yes, you need a certain amount of cap space for the draft picks.

What’s going on with D. Bell? We sure could use that O-Line help. I like Gay I hope we pick him up and he knows the Horton system cuts back on the learning curve, which is a help… Get these two guys and I think we had a good free agency off season. OLB and WR rounds 1 and 3

Get one of them hell! We gotta replace Marshall, that was a sizable loss. Both of them are better than our corner opposite PP.

    Corners opposite PP

  24. By Eazy E on Mar 19, 2012 | Reply

We need more of a corner than a db because we expect kerry to come back and perform at a high level from his broken foot. He was before he got hurt.

what are you doing with skelton are you going to get a new qb? Or what you should look in to tim tebow becouse we should get some3 more peaple we need it.

Why is everyone suprised that Manning ended up in Denver? He said all along that he prefered to remain in the AFC. As long as one team in that conference were willing to take a chance on him, that is where i figured he would end up!
They better hope that they are going to get their monies worth. It’s quite a gamble. Even if he is healthy enough to play, you have to be constantly concerned about him taking hits. That could result in farther injury to his already iffy surgery effectivness.

As for the drafted players . There is a set amount that the teams are allowed to pay the draftees. I think part of the new CBA agreement was that they wouldn’t continue to get the kind of signing bonus money that they were getting prior to the work stoppage. I’m not sure what the amount is this year. But it is included in the total cap allowance.

If we restructure both Cambells and Kolbs about how much cap space could that free up. I know we don’t have figures to work with but maybe an nfl average could work.

    RE: Restructure

There is no “NFL average.” Everything has to do with how the new deal is structured. Guesstimating doesn’t really work.

If the Cards want to go 8-8 in 2012 then it would be a good idea to sign Gay and Bush. Mediocrity gets mediocrity.

Any CB on the roster that could possibly fill the safety/ cb role that Marshall did?
Would that be putting too much on Peterson this early in his career with a position that some people eventually see him filling?
Rhodes is in his last year, any point in him restructuring?

    RE: Filling Marshall role

I think that’s the idea of looking at these guys today. Don’t forget, if Rhodes is healthy, he is a three-down guy.

Any chance the Cards are looking at WR Legedu Naanee from Carolina? He started to come into his own with Cam Newton throwing him a few passes. Has his broken foot heeled yet? Is that the reason we aren’t seeing his name mentioned anywhere online. His 40+ receptions (field strecher) might be a good fit at a cheap price.

Any word on how the meeting with Gay went yesterday,is he still here?
and do we have an offer out to D. Bell or any of the DB’s from yesterday?

Hey Darren, in you opinion would drafting another first round CB like Dre Kirkpatrick from Alabama be an option we actually consider? Also how about trading down, would that be an option to consider as well?

    RE: Questions

I can see a trade down possibility. As for CB in the first round, I would doubt it, although you never know.
