Odds and ends on a Friday

Posted by Darren Urban on July 20, 2012 – 4:49 pm

Trying to run some errands on a Friday in prep for going to training camp — that doesn’t mean I didn’t post a story about the top 10 questions the Cards face heading to Flagstaff — I just wanted to drop a couple of small notes:

— Ken Whisenhunt’s last free weekend is being spent at the American Century Championship, the annual celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. Whiz was a plus-11 today on the first day of the three-day event, using the modified Stableford scoring system. Actor Jack Wagner and former Major League pitcher Mark Mulder are tied for the lead at plus-22. Whiz played with former NFLers Marshall Faulk (plus-14) and Vinny Testaverde (plus-11) — I wonder if Vinny and Whiz talked at all about how Testaverde turned down the Cards in 2007 when they tried to sign him after Matt Leinart got hurt, instead picking the Panthers and then beating the Cards a few days later.

— In just a couple of weeks, Sunday, Aug. 5, the Cards will be playing in the Hall of Fame game. When I think of the Hall of Fame, I think of burnt pizza. OK, not really, but that was the best segue I can come up with to have to take a look at this entertaining video of Cards coaches being flown by Michael Bidwill to Canton a couple years ago, a surprise for Russ Grimm when he was being inducted to the Hall.

— At long last, we are unveiling a Cardinals’ app for your smartphones and iPad Monday. And guess what? It’s free. For more info, click here.

Have a good weekend. I’ll be talking to you all a lot more very soon.

I don’t know if you have done this in the past or not, but you should do a competition for fans to showcase their collection of Arizona Cardinals gear, memorabilia, autographs, etc. This could be a video posted on your YouTube channel, or a photo album. I know you did a competition earlier for a picture wearing Cardinals gear, and there was that competition with the flag design. Just a thought I just came up with, while looking at my personal collection today. Let me know what you think.

Thank you for reading and responding. Have a great day!

Please remind the guys to be careful driving up to Flagstaff…, and cross our fingers, this is the last weekend before practice starts and the Cards are the only NFC West team without a DWI spectacle. (Knock on wood)

The man sure loves his golfing. Finally though, it feels like it’s been years since the season ended. Preseason or not, football is football and i for one am glad it’s that time of the year again. This will be a very interesting camp hopefully.

Be careful and enjoy. Just remember that you are the eyes and ears for all of us who are not able to get up to Flagstaff. We wait with anxiety and excitement for your posts which mean more than TV reports because we can interact. I’ve been a Cards fan since 1963 while living in a small Missouri farming community. I enjoyed the 70s with Don Coryel (spelling) but he had the benefit of an exceptional QB and running back. Kurt gave us that one more time. I personally think we have the next exceptional QB on the team right now, but I don’t think he is competing for the starting job. (I’m curious to see what anyone else thinks later) Waiting for the next post. Jim Hart????????? Yes he was exceptional and that’s when the term Cardiac Cards was coined. Our running back then. I’ll leave that for a trivia question.

We had more close games last year, and Skelton did as good as Jim Hart. I think Kolb can be very good if he can get over his injury problem. I also think that Levi Brown can help him with that this year. If Kolb does get hurt, I think we have a Jim Hart in Skelton to give us some more Cardiac Moments.

@ BigAl – Clark Haggans served a few days in jail last month for a 2011 DUI.

@Darren – “burnt pizza” isn’t the food I think associated with Russ Grimm.
I reckon most people would go with regurgitated hot dog.

Good news for next year, I looked at our schedule, we are going to be 10-6 next year, sweet!!!!!!!!!

  12. By johnnybluenose on Jul 23, 2012 | Reply

CORMAC…10 and 6 is not sweet. it’s just a little above average. 12 and 4 is sweet and 13 and 3 or better would be juicy indeed. but, let’s get this year played before we even look at 2013.
