Dockett’s excellent start

Posted by Darren Urban on September 13, 2012 – 10:08 am

He should have had a couple of sacks before Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson somehow managed to escape, but there is no doubt that defensive lineman Darnell Dockett was excellent in the season opener.

Officially, Dockett was credited by Cardinals’ coaches with two quarterback hits and five total tackles. said he was the most productive pass rusher in all of the NFL in Week 1 with what they said was seven hurries and three hits. Regardless of the discrepancy, it was clear Dockett started strong. He was as disruptive as I have ever seen him, and most importantly, he was disciplined — a couple of times, when Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was ready to leak outside the pocket and scramble, Dockett had been smart enough to stay home in his lane and quickly change Wilson’s mind.

The stats aren’t flashy, but this is what defensive coordinator Ray Horton had in mind. If he plays like that, is it any wonder linebacker Paris Lenon is getting off for a career-high two sacks? Or Daryl Washington piling up 10 tackles?

And that doesn’t even include the benefits Dockett delivered after the game when he spoke in support of quarterback Kevin Kolb after the game, not only going out of his way to praise the QB but also making sure to have a dose of realism in his thoughts. Dockett told Jim Trotter he’s willing to back any quarterback the Cards use.

“My biggest thing is, just don’t lose it for us,” Dockett said. “That’s my only emphasis. I’m not asking you to go out there and be 16-for-19 for 300 yards. I’m just asking you to go out there and, if you’re scrambling, don’t try to throw it between two people. Slide or throw it away, and we’ll punt and get after it on the series. That’s all I’m asking for.”

There’s no question Dockett got after it last game. Now comes a chance to get after Tom Brady.

P.S. The Big Red Rage with Kerry Rhodes is back tonight. Wide receiver Andre Roberts is the guest. It’ll be held at Majerle’s at Chandler Fashion Center as usual, beginning at 6 p.m., although it will be tape delayed on Arizona Sports 620 beginning at 7 p.m.

Dd is a stud I’m glad I’m not the qb when he is coming after them

Release the hounds on Brady!! So he wont know what hit em or where it’s coming from? I believe in this upset, I’m more concerned about the 9ers than Brady. We have to beat them twice maybe even three times come the end of the year!

Been an interesting ride with DD, from a man that was bordering on rebellion re. contract to straight up stud as player and team mate.

Smart, talent coupled with ridiculous work ethic and insatiable desire to win…what’s not to love…??

Average score I see everyone predicting the Cardinals loose is 40-10 Patriots. The last time they went to Foxboro they got mopped in the snow, I think there is a chance, I love being the underdog. Dockett played his butt off, but what he said about the QB is the realist statement, and pretty much summed up what they need the QB to do.

Im expecting a big season from our pass rush this year. game 1 down and a good defensive game. we need our offence to come together more and get that running game going. Also I was at the game watching Michael Floyd when he played and he was open numerous time but the ball was thrown to the opposite side of the field…we need to utilize all our weapons.

Hey Darren– Dockett had a nice game against Seattle-
would love to see him get after Brady this week. He also seems to be a maturing player providing some good leadership qualaties as well. If everyone does their job in Horton’s defense- the unit should be fine. They will be tested this week in New England– the biggest thing I’m looking for from the defense is not to give up the big play. I hope they play smart and make NE earn everything they get. I really don’t want to see too many blitzes from Horton- tight coverage and hard hits on the receivers. Have to keep their TE’S in check – nothing easy. Darren–I think Horton is pretty happy at this point with the defense but we have to get more interceptions from our LB’S & DB’S!!! Do you see Horton stressing this as a point of emphasis during his practices????

    RE: Turnovers

The coaches always would like more turnovers.

Do you think the Andre Carter workout was to add to the LB corp or try to gain information on the NE defense?

    RE: Carter workout

On a workout, a guy flies in, goes on the field for, say, 30 minutes to work out, and then leaves while the team makes a decision. It wouldn’t be about espionage.

Dockett #90 Just one of the nicest Big guys you want to meet.

But if you should meet up with Darnell on the Football field on Game Day, I have one thing to say to ya.

No it was not a Truck that hit you, nor a Brick wall that you ran into. It was just Darnell Dockett #90 DT 3 time pro bowler 9 year Pro that re-parted your hair line.

Look Out New England, Darnell is coming to visit and he is bringing 52 of his friends!

    GO CARDS!!!

Darren – why do you answer questions like you are Bellicheck. Lighten up bro, you are a beat writer.

DD had a very good game against the rookie-led Seahawk offense. But I find his comments almost comical- to tell the offense “just don’t lose it for us”. What has the Cardinal defense EVER won? Well, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt- “what a difference 3 1/2 years makes”

Dockett was all over the place, he just needs to be more in control when he gets to the QB. Misses to many tackles because of his feet.
