Some quick odds and ends

Posted by Darren Urban on July 9, 2013 – 12:58 pm

With camp fast approaching, I figured it’s a good time for a live chat, which will take place tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. right here. Rookies report July 23, so we’re basically two weeks away from stuff happening. Feel free to pop in and ask some questions. I’ll be on there for about an hour or so. Not a whole lot set in cement yet, obviously, and while it’s not always had to discern most of the starters, there will be some interesting battles to whittle down to a 53-man roster.

— Got a random question on Twitter about the fact No. 1 draft pick Jonathan Cooper is unsigned. No, it’s not a worry. As I said, the rookies will be in the 23rd, with the first practice July 26. I don’t have any doubt that’s a window big enough to get it done.

— If you hadn’t seen, Coach Bruce Arians is up for the vote for Coach of the Year in the upcoming ESPYs. Arians, who was nominated for his work with the Colts, is the only NFL coach on the list. The other candidates are UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, Duke lacrosse coach John Danowski, Lousiville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino and Miami Heat coach Erik Spolstra. You can vote right here.

    Hi Darren,

What do you think could be holding up Coopers talks? I thought with the new CBA that rookie contracts were basically slotted for each pick. Doesn’t that eliminate most of the negotiation points? What points can rookies still negotiate?

    RE: Cooper

Right now, the biggest thing holding them up is everyone is on vacation. No one is working on it and it doesn’t matter, because Cooper isn’t here to sign it anyway. It is slotted, there are small things that can be negotiated but again, it will get done.

    1) How is the Honey badgers weight\strength training coming ? Has he adapted to an the NFL play style?

    2) Will Jonathan cooper be ready to start against the Rams?

    3) How Robert Gill looks in pads

4)See Rob Housler in pads. Because so far he’s much improved off what I would call a good 2nd year for a TE, with no real QB.

4.5) Big Darnell Docket in his new scheme hes been getting me hyped up for

    5) Carson Palmer,Carson Palmer,Carson Palmer. Did I say Carson Palmer?

5.5) If michael Floyd has come into this season how he ended the last, because so far all signs say yes.

    6) O line x 5. Levi Brown especially

    7) If our d has improved on our amazing season like PP and others have been claiming

These are my big points I’m looking forward to watch when training camp starts.

Remember, during D.Washington’s suspension the roster is actually 54 for four weeks. I was very pleased to see Anthony Edwards still organizing player development for the Cards – what a great gentleman and clutch receiver!

As far as big things in camp, you should’ve mentioned Carson Palmer, Carson Palmer and Carson Palmer.

I was watching Hard Knocks: Bengals and it got me real excited to see Palmer wearing Cardinals red.

I’ve heard the term “when the checks start be cashed in September” referring to the players getting regular pay. I’ve often wondered how the rookies, especially the UDFA’s are able to make it financially during the off season and training camp. Can you give some insight?

    RE: Offseason pay

There is a nominal payment each week when players are there to work (maybe $400. I’d have to check.) But generally, a player is winging in financially trying to make a team.

ANY WAY POSSIBLE cards would pick up CHAD JOHNSON??? Great pickup and could probably get at league minimum.
