Three-lineman addition ends Byrd’s time

Posted by Darren Urban on August 6, 2013 – 2:04 pm

The Cardinals signed three linemen today: A pair of centers in Deveric Gallington (mentioned earlier today) and Kyle Quinn (who happens to be a University of Arizona product) along with defensive tackle Jonathan Mathis, who is from Texas A&M. The Cards have been looking to upgrade their center depth, and Mathis is needed with all the defensive line injuries.

That means three players had to be released, and one — being waived-injured — was wide receiver LaRon Byrd, who suffered a concussion last week. Byrd had been in the mix to win a job after making the team as an undrafted player last year, but he didn’t flash as much as the coaches had been looking for over the summer and now has been dealing with the injury.

Also waived-injured was defensive end Everrette Thompson (shoulder), while wide receiver Tyler Shaw was cut.

The Cardinals now, behind Lyle Sendlein, have Gallington, Quinn, Adam Bice and Mike Gibson as reserve centers. Gibson can also play guard.

Wow.. I have to wonder if they are looking to make a little more competition at the Center spot? Also sad to see Byrd go but I thought that was coming anyway. A lot like Stephan Williams I always hoped but it never happened.

Was really excited to see LaRod Byrd play t this season so was disappointed when he was cut for a reportedly “mild concussion” and have to wonder if we really need all that depth at Center. However, am gald the O-line is getting a little sturdier, as it was one of the things Kurt Warner was doubtful about in his interview of Channel 15 Sunday night. Looks like Steve Breaston has found a good home with the Saints and would have liked to see him returnn to the Cards. It seems like our throw aways have done pretty good as a whole landing with teams like the Patriots, Broncos, Colts, 9ers, Steelers, 9ers and Seahawks (all playoff teams)…the Cards must be a good place to get an NFL education! Can’t wait to see how this group stands up to the Packers this coming Friday even if it won’t be the starters. Football is FINALLY here! 🙂

I like the move of adding depth all across the O-line. Byrd was a good kid, but we have so much talent at receiver. This move made sense. Depth is so important on the offensive line. It has to be a priority.
