Cards add linebacker after injuries

Posted by Darren Urban on September 24, 2013 – 10:22 am

The Cardinals promoted Dontay Moch from the practice squad to aid with their linebacker woes, and today, they did more, signing linebacker Vic So’oto. So’oto has spent time with the Packers, Raiders and Redskins since arriving in the league in 2011. He’ll give them a body for now. Holdovers Matt Shaughnessy, John Abraham, Alex Okafor and Moch will be ahead of him on the depth chart. Officially, Okafor will be listed as the first-unit Sam linebacker, with Moch and So’oto behind him. At Will LB, Shaughnessy is first, ahead of Abraham.

The Cards also added linebacker Bruce Taylor to the practice squad. Taylor, an undrafted rookie, was with the Bengals in training camp.

Next week, the Cards will also get back linebacker Daryl Washington from suspension. Adding So’oto means they have filled the roster back to 53, meaning someone will have to be released to get Washington back and active.

Like it… we’ll see if these moves were enough to stop the bleeding, so to speak.

Darren: any inklings on how Massie and Potter are currently perceived? I understand they were beaten out in preseason, but we also watched them play very well last year in second half of season… just wondering…

Here is hoping we can grind out a win and rally next week with DWash back in fold. He’s paid his dues, now lets play some football.

    Go Cards.

    RE: Massie and Potter

Well, Potter is esentially a guard for the moment. Sowell is the backup LT. As for Massie, he’s not going to challenge Winston right now I don’t think. We’ll see if that changes later in the season.

Heard discussion about merits of using 6 lineman, in lieu of 5.

Thoughts on Massie or Potter or Sowell more often in backfield or as TE? We saw Sowell used a couple times that way already. Can Potter catch? 😉 Brown doesn’t likely to to improve much… pretty long track record unfortunately.

Is Fitz hurt still? He’s 37th in league in receiving yards? Hamstrings can linger.. for ever it seems. Poor OL play and Fitz hurt, hard to overcome unless make dramatic changes in game planning.. wondering if BA has the…inclination? We saw Whiz dig in heels on OL issues and our QBs get creamed…

At LB, I guess we signed “the best available Taylor.” (Before that, you could probably say the same thing about our stockpiling “the best available Jeffersons.”)

-I am sad to see LB Sam Acho on Injury Reserve. (Rest well buddy)
-With the injuries that have occurred, now is the Arizona Cardinals chance to test out new linebackers to see who would upgrade the position (personally I didn’t think LB Lorenzo Alexander was a starting LB)
-LB Dontay Moch can redeem his career by starting as the OLB with LB Alex Okafor starting as the other OLB.
-With LB Daryl Washington returning next week, I expect him to replace LB Jaspar Brinkley. He will re-energize the defense in so many levels.
-Rashad Johnson should rest this week and return next week when D. Washington returns.
-SS Yeremiah Bell should be demoted. Now is the Cardinals chance to switch CB Justin Bethel back to safety. He is much faster and can definitely jump really high. I would love to see S Tony Jefferson start at FS.
-CB Jerraud Powers has been struggling. CB Antoine Cason should enter the game as a starter and challenge Powers for the starting job.

I disagree with the Bell comment. He is much better than expected and I thought he played well when they moved him to the strong side LB. Peterson or Cason (taller) should have covered Graham or doubled. We avg’d over 5 ypc in 1st half of saints game. Run game the only thing to slow down hi.pow offense.
