Mathieu has confidence in new DC, same scheme

Tyrann Mathieu chose his words carefully — no reason to want to undercut the announcement sometime next week of the new defensive coordinator — but the Cardinals safety seemed comfortable in the plan for the Cardinals’ defense going forward and who will be leading it.

“I think I’ve heard enough and I’m confident enough to know we’ve been playing too well to have the scheme change,” Mathieu said during a trip around the Super Bowl’s Radio Row. “We look forward to one of our position coaches being DC.”

Coach Bruce Arians has already said the DC position will be filled in-house by a young coach. All signs point to outside linebackers coach James Bettcher. It won’t be the only coaching hire, not with inside linebackers coach Mike Caldwell leaving to join outgoing defensive coordinator Todd Bowles with the New York Jets. Putting an experienced coach with the linebackers makes sense, and Arians has promised he will get the new DC “help.” I will not be surprised to see at least one defensive hire to have NFL defensive coordinator experience.

There will be an understandable wait-and-see approach with a new defensive coordinator, but that was there with Bowles too.

Do you see the cardinals signing Adrian Wilson to a 1yr deal soon but in a different role? If any team is going to give him a chance it could be us.

We should sign Adrian Wilson and put him at linebacker position

It would be great if Bettchner was our DC….then sign Mike Nolan as his mentor. Mike has a great defensive background…..go Cardinals!!!!

I’d like to see Wilson signed and retired as a Cardinal, and then offered a coaching position. Great leader and teacher.

CoachK… Adub is not ready to retire. I could see him coming in as a camp body just to show the league if he can be ready to sign with any team. SK should think that is a valuable roster spot. That is a tough one; he was a good man on our team. They will retire him later…I’m sure of it…

So, if you want ADub, who do we cut, Jefferson, Honey Badger, Johnson or Bucannon???

We won’t keep more than 4 safeties.

as much as i loved to see wilson playing for this franchise i just dont get why he insist he want play in the nfl
why at bast being just a camp body, adrian wilson is one of the cardinals greatest players, one of the few to have more then 20 interceptions and sacks .

like the idea of Mike Nolan to come in as a “mentor”. With his experience as a head coach in the Division, that will only help the Cards against the division games.

I don’t understand why he couldn’t work as a situational guy. Given the chance to do something similar to what Bucannon’s role was I think he could excel. He wouldn’t necessarily need to take a safety spot. I have a feeling he would get to the QB a lot more often than Bucannon did. Not to knock what he did, because he was awesome. I just don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Maybe I’m just living in the past and need to let it go?

Yep, you remember what Wilson was.

This Wilson was released by the cards, pretty much released by the Pats, and no one wanted him. Not Tampa, Not Oakland, Not the Jets. He has not made a tackle in two years.

If Wilson is signed and played, it would be like watching Ali fight Larry Holmes. Just sad seeing a hero get old.
