Okafor arrested after disturbance

Posted by Darren Urban on March 9, 2015 – 10:29 am

Linebacker Alex Okafor, who led the Cardinals with eight sacks this past season, was arrested in Austin, Texas, early Monday morning for evading arrest after a disturbance. There are not a lot of details about the situation at this point, but for whatever reason, Okafor took off on foot when police tried to question him. Okafor also had a warrant out for a previous misdemeanor violation.

UPDATE: Here are details. Sounds like he accidentally ran a guy over and then didn’t stop when cops yelled at him to stop.

Okafor came into his own this season after an injury-marred rookie year in 2013. He also started 2014 banged up after hurting his quadriceps in the preseason, making him a non-factor the first four games. But he rallied to play well the rest of the season.

Really had high hopes for this guy…thought he was coming on as the season progressed…Acho needs to keep him in shouting distance! What was the warrant
    misdemeanor for?

Just great. So our already depleted linebacker corps just got worse. Steve Keim has to be banging his head against the wall.

    RE: Okafor

I am guessing the Cardinals won’t be commenting until it all plays out. And, at least with the little info out there, this does not seem like something that could turn into a major problem. We will see.

    What The Heck!!!
If an argument starts, “Shut up and Walk Away!” It’s hard to do sometimes but you have to learn how to stay out of arguments.
Arguments Will bring the Police, and the Media, then you are no longer an Arizona Cardinal and/or suspended and you and Washington can trade stories on how you let the Team down with your Screw Ups!!!

    I’m Done.

    GO CARDS!!!

I swear, this pisses me off. Even IF this turns out to be no big deal….how long will it be until he does something that IS??? Evading the police following a disturbance….took off on foot as police were trying to question him ( yeah, that ALWAYS works, right? When was the last time someone tried to run from the police on foot and actually got away??? )….and he had a warrant out for a previous misdemeanor violation.

Anyone see anything to worry about here? Because it paints a picture of a problem waiting to happen.

I hate to focus on how this affects me as a fan of a team that these guys are playing for. But ya know what? As fans of these teams and with the investment we make as fans of these teams and how these teams can be affected on the field when these idiots get themselves in legal trouble….yeah, sorry, but it pisses me off.

We just endured a seaon where we lost maybe our best overall defensive player and a RB that we were counting on for a significant contribution because of THEIR legal problems. And these losses loomed VERY LARGE in a season that had legitimate SB potential at one point.

If these guys want to screw up THEIR lives and the lives of those around them, fine. I really could care less. But I don’t appreciate them affecting MY life in ternms of the very real place that being a Cardinals fan holds for me.

    Poll question:

If you could convince A. Peterson to play for AZ for an average of 7 mil per year and give up a 4th round draft pick and safety R. Johnson, would you pull off the deal??? (doubtful AP would play for 7 mil, but if Murray stays in Dallas and AP wants to play for a winner, got to try to temp him)

would be interessting, how much yards he made evading the police?

maybe the TEAM should try him as running back?

    @D, NO!!

stop promoting peterson, i want a team fighting for the playoffs, and not for petersons canton hopes.

I SAY…DWASH../OKAFOR,Should be the Bidwells to go to the 50 yard line @ UOP..Go at it for as long as it takes to knock some sense into their brains..If the Honey Badger could change his mentality..They can too!..I Started as a safety for a state Championship in Arizona in the mid. 80’s..but did not have the physical talents they have to make to the next level.I hope these guys will both change for the good of the team/fans & help us win a championship..because it’s going to happen soon!..GO CARDS!!!

Before we get all in a twist, perhaps it would be a good idea to wait for the details.
From what I read this was a misdemeanor incident, preceeded by another misdemeanor warrant (could be failure to pay a parking ticket) and we all know how the media loves a great headline! Who makes better targets for tabloid news than football players?
Nonetheless, wonder if the organization ever considered having an annual orientation for all players outlining what is expected beyond the field when they signup to put on a Cardinal uniform? Might not be a bad idea to reinforce the idea that this is a Cardinal family and when they mess up, they make their family (players, coaches, owner and fans) look bad too.

Always felt that the main job of the current FO was to bring in a franchise QB. After the arrest of Akafor, the biggest job ahead of this FO is straightening out the LB situation.
Funny thing, I could have written this blog five years ago, or ten years or 15 or 50. Amazing how history repeats itself with the Cardinals. (Maybe except for a couple of years of Lomax when Cards’ fans thought they had the QB.)

Well, according to “sources” , the signing of Weatherspoon is all but done. This is a great signing.

Now reports are the cards are interested in Brooks Reed. Reed is not the edge rusher you want him to be, but is athletic and can set the edge against the run.

He could be ideal to stop Kaepernick and Wilson from getting out of the pocket and allowing our speed at ILB ( Spoon and DWash) to blitz the A gaps and get to them.

Depending on what happens to Okafer and what happens to DWash, I could see the cards going with Reed and Okafer outside and drafting a guy with some speed off the edge. To come in and give the cards a burst, while having the speed inside to run down these guys if they get loose.

Being that the superbowl team from the NFC has come from the West, building a team to win in the West is key.

Next, we need to address the DLine. Funny, with Paea going to the redskins, it looks like Dan Williams top spot is taken. Cards need to wait him out and he may come back at the right price.

If league protocol is consistent he should be looking at an 8 game suspension

  22. By Big Ken on Mar 9, 2015 | Reply

Yeah looks like Weatherspoon signs, (lol) a classic one year deal for SK and the Cardinals. Saints released Curtis Lofton ILB, good player but smaller.

Clssy…. NOPE… Your assumptions are not correct with the parking ticket idea.

The warrant was for a Class C misdemeanor for his arrest. Class C includes minor assault, illegal drugs…etc…NOT speeding, jay walking, littering etc…

I inquired of the details earlier; not available until probable arraignment. As Darren stated, this may not be a huge deal, but cross your fingers.

I just wonder when these guys will absorb some of the wisdom imparted by the staff? With near instant media, why don’t these get a girl, go to dinner and a movie, then go home. No…the posse provides the needy praise some seek.

Not cool at 2AM any more….later

Good thing they resigned Alameda since he is the only NT on the roster. I could see the resigning of T. Kelly to rotate with him and maybe a 3rd or 4th round draft pick at NT to groom. Or if a good DT is there at 24 in first round that could play in the middle..C.Davis?

I like Curtis Lofton. This guy can tackle and is best against the run. He’s healthy and I would choose him over Nate Irving any day.

C’mon man, I was hoping we’d found something in this guy. We’re already short at LB as it is.

    Dr. G.
Obviously you had more information but my point was that the media blows many incidents involving high profile individuals into something more than what it is and until the facts are in, it’s a waste of energy to jump to the conclusion that a suspension is imminent. I am a believer that an organization needs to have a message about how they want to be perceived by the public and that it needs to be constantly reinforced until it becomes an ingrained part of everyone’s professional identity…”This is who we are and this is what we stand for–integrity, commitment, and excellence on and off the field”
Agree with you (and like my daddy use to say) nothing good happens after midnight!

Let’s not ruin our season with off-season miscues!!!! We need Okafor on our team, and was starting to make some big plays. Hope this is just minor.

He was always under contract for 2015.

    William Barry –

Dude, I sure am glad SOMEONE out there appreciates Stanton as much as I do. Thank you!

Drew Stanton saved our asses last year. Period. We weren’t going 11-5 with only 6 games from Palmer. Those other 5 wins had to come from somewhere. And they weren’t coming from Ryan Lindley or Logan Thomas. Those guys had ( drumroll, please ) 0 wins between them. That means Stanton provided the wins that meant the difference between 11-5 and a probable 7-9, maybe 8-8, for this team.
