Weatherspoon tweaks hammy, and camp stuff

Posted by Darren Urban on August 2, 2015 – 1:08 pm

Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon hurt his hamstring during the first practice Saturday, but coach Bruce Arians doesn’t think it’s serious and even joked Sunday that Weatherspoon “just wants to be fresh for pads” when the Cards finally put them on Monday. Meanwhile, rookie linebacker Shaq Riddick — who missed all but one practice in OTAs and minicamp with a bad hamstring — re-aggravated that hamstring injury and is undergoing an MRI. Linebacker Daryl Sharpton has a “very minor” hip flexor.

Other lunchtime notes:

— The Cardinals are hoping to take tight end Jermaine Gresham off the PUP list soon, so he can start playing his way into football shape. Arians compared Gresham’s situation to the one John Abraham was in last training camp when he showed up after missing most of the offseason.

— Arians said rookie wide receiver J.J. Nelson (pictured below) had a good first day. “I think he caught the DBs’ attention,” Arians said. Nelson can be a return man, but there should be a difficult fight for a fifth receiver slot with Brittan Golden, among others, and the top four spots going to Fitz, Floyd and the two J. Browns.

— There wasn’t much said about Jonathan Cooper by Arians except that he’s doing really well. There’s a reason. “Don’t want to jinx him,” Arians said.

— If there are any questions about Andre Ellington’s use after his injury-riddled 2014, there shouldn’t be. “I still want Andre to have in the neighborhood of 20 touches a game,” Arians said.

If anyone is ever smart enough to figure out how to “cure” a hamstring injury/pull/strain, they will be a wealthy dude overnight….

I hope BA is right about Spoon’s hammy. Hamstring injuries can be nagging as evidenced by Riddick. We need Spoon’s presence on the field. He’s missed enough playing time in the last two years, which accounts for his one year deal.

We have to get Tony McDaniels!!!!!!! He is excellent as a run stuffer and his 6’7 frame, wow he is a must. One year deal will suffice

Hey Darren, do you have any specifics on the contract the Cardinals agreed to with Jermaine Gresham?

    RE: Contract

I have not seen that yet.

Darren: I know its early but do you expect both Nelson and Rodney Gunter to contribute this season? Perhaps Nelson can get some looks this season at the slot while providing help in the return game and Gunter can be effective in a rotational defensive line?

    Steve —

    RE: Gunter/Nelson

Way too early. Nelson has looked good thus far, but with no pads, impossible to tell how Gunter will do.

One day into camp and guys are already hurt. What’s going to happen when they really start to practice?

Some guys just can’t get or stay healthy. The guy ( Weatherspoon ) has barely been able to play at all for the past 2 years. I know we’re HOPING he can be healthy enough to make a contribution this year, but….should we be EXPECTING that? Doesn’t seem like the Falcons had much hope….

BUT I will hope this is just a hiccup as he tries to re-start his motor and get the football juices flowing again. Really, that wouldn’t be such a surprise. Since it appears we may never hear from Daryl Washington again, we need this guy.

In other news, I’m seeing where some notable Seahawks are trying to get paid NOW ( Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor ) right after they got their deals done with Wilson and Michael Bennett. I guess they HAD to reach a point where this was going to become a problem. For me, it ain’t a big enough problem yet but it sure couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of guys! 🙂

I don’t suppose there could be ANY way this results in Kam Chancellor demanding a trade ( as of this moment, he’s not showing up for camp ) and ending up wearing a Cardinals uniform… there??? Nah, probably not a snowball’s chance in hell. But, MAN would I love to have him here…..of the players I would most love to pluck from that team to be a Cardinal, he is right at the top of the list. William Thomas not far behind!

All the videos have been great from camp. Most talented roster since came to. AZ imo. They know it too, from. Veldheer to ‘spoon to Carson, to Jerrod…they know….

I hate to be a pessimist but looks like the over/under for daily injuries for the Cards during training camp is 2.

Now RB Johnson has a Hamstring problem. What gives? Aren’t these guys warming up properly?

Mychal Kendricks. Chip Kelly claims he’s going no where but I bet we could get him cheap. Still only 24 coming off his best season yet. 5’11 240 he’s big and is a solid run stuffer. Not to mention with Ryans and Alonso he won’t see the field much. Just a thought.

What ever happened to Daryl Washington?

Kendricks is actually known for his pass coverage skills, at 5’11” and 240, that is actually on the small side, he isnt big for an ILB by any stretch of the imagination. All these injuries are par for the course ever since the CBA came out with no off season hitting with pads, or very little, plus the players dont have as many off season practices/workouts, guess they figured making an average of what?! $5million a season average isnt enough money to have off season practices, and definitely no pads!!! God forbid for such a measly salary that they be required to keep themselves in top shape, unfortunately until the CBA is renegotiated and hopefully they put more off season hitting and conditioning, increased injuries are going to be a fact of life, most these guys get paid whether they play or are injured!! The days of the Fitzgerald’s workout warrior type player is long gone!! Seems most pro athletes (moreso football players) are to busy in the off season beating on women, smoking and selling drugs, carrying illegal weapons and a variety of other illicit activity’s!! How can we expect them to stay in shape too!! LOL!

Have to agree with the hamstring injury issues, they are the worst!! My son just graduated high school andhe has been fighting a torn hammy for just over a year now, just when it seems almost healed and the pain and knotting up has all but disappeared, he will overdo it while working or riding his skateboard and BAM! Right back to leg elevated, ice and heat alternating and pretty much 4-6 months of light activity if any at all the first month or so, never seen anything like it, and frustrating as hell for him!!

Was reading that Lasicke (sp) the undrafted RB that played rugby in college is laying down the wood now that pads are on, supposedly he is popping some people, introducing himself!! Hell yeah, I love it, football is upon us fellow Birdgang fanatics!!!!
