Arians: Cards looking for RB

Posted by Darren Urban on August 10, 2015 – 1:54 pm

With no morning walkthrough, Bruce Arians didn’t meet with the media until just now, right before practice. While Andre Ellington is practice today, David Johnson remains out and is “very iffy” this week and Arians made clear a couple of times he is not happy with the overall running back play at this point and the team will be looking to potentially add one to the roster.

“I am not pleased with the time (Andre) and David have lost, and I was not fired up about the running backs’ performance on Saturday,” Arians said.

Marion Grice has also been out with a hamstring issue.

Arians said he thought there were a couple of times when running backs should’ve beaten the defenders in one-on-one situations Saturday and could not. He said Johnson’s injury is normally a two-week problem but he’s still unproven and “we’ve got to make plans in case it does (linger).”

    Darren / Kyle:

In your opinion, who do you think is the best FA Running Back, that can fit the Cardinals mold?

Also, do you think a trade could happen? If so, who you you think?

    Thanks guys!

    RE: FA RB

I’d think a speed back makes more sense right now over power. But we’ll see.

As for a trade, I don’t expect one for running back. If they could deal a DL near the end of camp, maybe for a pick, that could happen.

    Chris Johnson?

    The argument for Chris Johnson;

    1. With virtually no QB last year, he averaged 4.3 yards a carry.

    2. He is very good out of the back field

3 he won’t be asked to carry the load

    4. six straight years of 1000+ yards before last year.

    5. If the cards can stretch the field with John Brown and JJ Nelson, Johnson’s speed and experience could be big finding huge running lanes.

    6. Hasn’t turned 30 yet.

    7. could force one safety up to stop the run , leaving Fitz or Floyd one on one.

    Just a suggestion

Another draft class wasted with a first round OLman and a small school wide receiver. Lost opportunity. Looks lime the cards will be 31st again in rushing. Better keep Carson healthy or we are in trouble.

its like the old cards again.

Could Chris Johnson be coming to Arizona???
If they want a speed back, Chris Johnson and Ben Tate should be their top 2 choices.
If they want a power back, Steven Jackson should be their top choice.
If they want a balanced back, Ray Rice & Mikel Leshoure should be their top two targets.

I say we give Chris Johnson a go. He could teach a few things to both Ellington and Johnson

Off topic but Ryan Lindley signed by the Patriots today….wow!! I don’t know how he sticks but I wish him well. Maybe he sticks around until Brady gets to play.He did the best he could for us and actually finished the game in Saint Louis and contributed to our close win there. He was put in a tough situation and took a lot of criticism and never complained or made excuses.

Steven f’n Jackson pleeaase. I was always jealous of the Rams when they had him. One year Sk deal. Give the man his money and a ring.

Hey Darren, what are your thoughts on Steven Jackson?

    RE: Jackson

    I’m thinking he’s pretty old.

I like the thought of giving Jackson the rock late in games to run the clock out. A back with his size running behind Veldheer and Iupati? Sign me up!

    20 carries each game.

I think they have look at pierre thomas or maybe even steven jackson for thos tough yards . Probaby not chirs johnson but i wouldn’t be to mad if they gave him a shot for preseason to see if he can make any plays he did show flashes last year him and Andre & david could be scary.

Anyone pissed about not drafting Adrian Peterson right now.

I’m not so sure about Chris Johnson. After seeing the veteran combine you really get a tangible representation of how much speed these guys lose after the first 3-5 years of their careers. CJ<1k is not going to come in and wow anyone. Could he be a steady vet presence and give us some value? Sure, absolutely.

It's like LT said when he rejuvenated his career with the Jets for a year or two. You're going to lose speed, period. You can't get faster, but you can get stronger. Chris Johnson is not strong, and at this point in his career he probably really isn't even that fast either, otherwise one of the other 31 teams would have jumped on him a long time ago.

This is why you get Adrian Peterson at ANY costs! I think Andre can be a beast, but still it’s A.D. I love Chris Johnson and last year wasn’t bad for him considering he got inconsistent touches from game to game, below average QB play, O-Line descending, etc. I know this because my little brother is a Jets fan. A lot of things went wrong for the New York Jets en route to a poor season. I also like Ray Rice and the 2nd chance story would be great for him and the Cardinals. Look, we ALL MUST forgive eventually and what he did wasn’t great, but yet and still, it is a PERSONAL issue between the Rice’ and it seems like they have solved the issue. He is a very charitable guy in his stomping grounds in New Jersey near Rutgers University and in Baltimore, he shouldn’t be killed because of 1 mistake! He was one of the top backs in the game and I mean ELITE when he was playing, don’t forget that! Both he and CJ2K can run the ball obviously, but also catch the ball out of the backfield, pass protect, whatever you need them to do, they can do! Those are just a couple, I still like Stephen Jackson, but I need to know about his health because he was pretty banged up in Atlanta. It is a need…

lindley signed with the patriots? looks like belichick likes to know about arians offense, does he expect a bowl cards vs. pats?

anyway, i wish lindley the best, and i hope, he can beat garopolo.

Chris Johnson??? The same guy the Titans and Jets cut??? One has to wonder if he can’t cut it with the Titans or the Jets why we would want him over Steven Jackson, Pierre Thomas or even Ray Rice. Jackson may be older but still a power back and with an impressive resume with great character, as is Thomas. Ray Rice was quite the bulldog for the Ravens and would bring no more baggage than Johnson who has been a three ring circus his entire career.
My bet is that he’ll be gone by the time we set the final roster and BA’s paper dolls
are healthy again. Still kills me that Gurley went to the Rams!

  22. By John The Draft Guy on Aug 11, 2015 | Reply

Looks like BA and SK see the same benefit of bringing on Chris Johnson as I do.

According to sources, CJ has been offered a 1 year deal by the Cards.

The fact that not one person has mentioned Pierre Thomas scares me. Not sure he’s affordable (couldn’t reach agreement with Houston), but he’s better than Jackson and Johnson at this point in their respective careers. Good downhill runner, fantastic in the passing game.. I’d get rid of Taylor and Grice and go get Thomas on a one year deal.

I like Ahmad Bradshaw. Although he is coming off injury, he is still relatively young and has break away speed in the run game. He is not the best between the tackles runner, but he can get the job done.

Mikel Leshoure is perfect for the Cardinals.

  26. By Bill on Aug 11, 2015 | Reply

I know it will raise eyebrows because of his off field problem, even though it is over and he has suffered the penalty, I would like to see Ray Rice on our team. He is a RB that can work between the tackles and make it work.

Please sign Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson comes with problems from the Off-Season. Steven is in shape and ready to go.

Hamstring problems galore. I wonder if this has anything to do with BA requiring the team to stretch on their own time before practice. Makes one wonder if guys are slacking off with the non-supervised stretching or just not doing it properly.
