Riddick return, OL moves and similar butts

Posted by Darren Urban on August 24, 2015 – 2:24 pm

It was a long presser from Bruce Arians today after no morning walkthrough. Here are some of the highlights before I head down to practice:

— The injury list right now includes cornerback Jerraud Powers, who is now dealing with a hamstring issue of his own and will be “shut down” for a few days. Arians did not sound concerned. Good news, though, running back Chris Johnson is actually better than Arians originally thought with his hamstring and is day to day. Arians said Saturday he thought Johnson would missed a week or two. OL Earl Watford had a shot in his troublesome ankle and gets a rest day (the Cards are off Tuesday too), and will be back Wednesday, as will TE Jermaine Gresham (back) and WR Brittan Golden (sore after taking a big hit Saturday.)

— OLB Shaq Riddick is finally back at practice. So is CB Jonte Green and T Rob Crisp.

— Arians said it was “discouraging” ILB Sean Weatherspoon is still out with his bad hamstring. There is a hope he’ll return to practice this week, but we’ll see.

— The coaches have talked as a staff about playing the starters less Sunday in Oakland in light of all the injuries around the NFL. Arians said each guy will be gauged differently, based on practice and the need for reps.

— When Watford comes back, he’ll work at right tackle and have the chance to battle Bradley Sowell for the starting job. D.J. Humphries will spend the week at left tackle to get some work there; Arians wants him to be able to play both sides as a backup — which he will be to start the season almost assuredly.

— Arians praised Alani Fua and, to a lesser extent, Gabe Martin, at inside linebacker. Arians intrigued by Fua’s length.

— After video watching, Arians still said there is no leader at third QB between Sims and Thomas.

— Although Mike Leach already took the blame on Twitter, Arians reiterated it was Leach snapping the ball too soon to holder Dave Zastudil that caused the botched PAT in the game. “A 25-year-vet, whatever he is, snapping to a 30-year vet, and one wasn’t looking,” Arians said. “You would not anticpate that happening out of thise two guys, but it did happen.”

— Arians liked the game starting left guard Ted Larsen had a lot, but “he blew it with one dumb penalty,” Arians lamented of Larsen’s 15-yarder for jumping on a pile. Still, he said he liked Larsen’s game, and that of Jonathan Cooper’s too.

— The starting center job between A.Q. Shipley and Lyle Sendlein is “heavily contested.” Arians added that Carson Palmer gets no say in the matter. “Their butts are about the same,” Arians quipped.

Don’t you think if Thomas had “it”, he would be battling Stanton rather than an undrafted rookie free agent for a roster spot?

    RE: Thomas

    That’s a fair question.

the offensive line will be the downfall doesn’t matter who is running the ball ,if 3 guys are on you before you get out backfield then that just won’t cut it.i got thumbs down on earlier post about if carson can’t be kept upright ,he won’t make it to game 7.we might have skill players on offensive but it won.t matter with the offensive fan since 1967,i’m just stating what I think is true.can’t always control injuries, but backup o line is not real comforting.

Who said we couldn’t land a shutdown corner after Revis left to play opposite PP?

Read it in the 1st line of the presser, Jarraud Powers is now a shut down corner.

I gotta say, the fact that the job for starting center seems up in the air at this point really doesn’t speak well of Shipley. How could it? The team released Sendlein in the off-season, obviously hoping to up-grade. And Shipley was obviously the guy they thought was going to be that up-grade. And now, as camp nears the end, Sendlein is back and is apparently right there with Shipley.

At this point, I’m pulling for Sendlein. Go for it, Lyle! Seems like you came back with an edge and something to prove. Take it back, bro!

Darren, will Peterson be shadowing No.1 WRs again this year or staying on the left side like last year (when we had Cro)?

    RE: PP

Don’t know that yet. I’d guess he’d shadow.

Discouraging that Weatherspoon is still out?? Ya think? He’s become kinda like Bigfoot around here – he might exist and some people have supposedly seen him, but….no real evidence as yet.

Geez, we lose Iupati and suddenly, it seems like we’re kinda in trouble along the O-line….anyone else feeling that way??? How did that happen?

I am feeling frustrated that our first round pick seems destined to start the season as a back-up. OK, first YEAR O-linemen and not guaranteed to be immediate starters / impact players. But unless they are QB’s, first ROUND players SHOULD be expected to do more than….well, look like they re destined to be back-ups come week one. First rounders SHOULD be expected to contribute as rookies. Am hoping that it kicks in for Humphries at some point ( some point SOON ) and he starts to roll.

Between the FA studs we’ve landed and our first round picks in the last few years, this O-line should be ready to start paying the bills – NOW. But I’m not feeling like that’s where it’s heading right now….

Have you seen anything you like from Glenn Carson? I remember watching him last year against the Chargers I think and he had like 11 tackles in the preseason. Yes it wasn’t a real game and yes it wasn’t against starters but he was all over the field making plays. Reminded me a lot of London Fletcher. But I just wondered if he has progressed enough to start because I saw a lot of good stuff from him last year.

    RE: Carson

I think the Cards like what he does. The problem is that he is so much like Minter and Demens I don’t know if they need them all.

Unfortunately, I am not optimistic about Spoon and Gresham’s chances of making an impact this year. Both have had careers riddled with injury issues. I hope I’m wrong and they get on the field and display their talent. I’m glad that Larsen and Cooper are playing well. Cooper looked great in run blocking schemes. Watford deserves his shot to unseat Sowell. Now is his time to show what he’s got.

The thing I find most amazing in this year’s pre-season (besides the injuries). Two long gone Cardinals QB’s have been awarded their team’s starting QB job for the 2015 NFL season. Both Josh McCown and Bryan Hoyer will be a #1 NFL QB this year.
Kevin Kolb was cited as the #1 guy in a boating regatta.

I give our GM, Steve K. credit for at least addressing our biggest problem in the off season and after the draft I actually thought I could have a year without our offensive line being a major worry for me and now it is back to a major worry. Just hoping our offensive line gets better as the season goes along, and Carson does not get injured.

Linebacker is my other major concern area, and a little worried about our punting situation. How about the rest of you?

    Go Cards

“no leader at third QB” ? BA needs an eye exam, get those specs of his replaced. After Palmer, Sims has been a bright spot in camp. I wonder if Stanton even gets re-signed after this year.

I’d like to see Sims play something else other than the fourth quarter special teamers before I say he has a chance. He had one good drive late in the first game, and a couple in the last game.

BA is definitely grasping for straws if the plan is to move Watford to Right Tackle. It is not a position that can just come to a guy that couldn’t even crack the starting squad as a Guard. In my opinion, this is a waste of valuable reps for Humphries. Humphries has to be the answer here. They picked him to unseat Massie. Give him a chance to do that over the next two weeks by increasing his workload. If he does not prove that he can do it, there will be guys cut from other teams soon that can and will fill the need.

    RE: Humphries
The cynic in me wonders if he was pouting about playing RT (he played LT in college) and just was being passive-aggressive and just not trying to learn RT. Now if all of a sudden he becomes brilliant at LT .

In post draft interviews he expressed his feeling that it would be simple to move to RT. He smiled a lot and was very genial in all interviews and still has a happy-go-lucky attitude in interviews responding to coaches comments…who does that in real life when our boss tells the world we aren’t trying and doing a lousy job?.

Just go out and play like a grown man and stop sleeping on the job!

Trade for Mettenberger after this season. Thomas and a 4th Rd Pick.

? is WTH is going on with DWash did the league kick him out & forgot to let us know…..2 games in & still nothing. Every Cards fan wants to see him play man

    Mr. Robles —

    RE: DWash

Technically, yeah, he was kicked out. Has the chance to come back in.

“In a blow to what was one of the best defenses in the league last season, the NFL has suspended linebacker Daryl Washington for at least a year, it was announced Friday.”

Perhaps it’s time for fans to begin a letter writing campaign to the Commissioner and NFLPA requesting clarity in the DWash case and requesting a decision ?

Washington is like an abusive marriage. It’s time we leave the shelter and move on already!

great article . ton of info here 🙂 . should be interesting to see who #53 is . whoever it is can thank Dwash LMAO . having this front office adds a entire new dimension to final roster cuts . some agonizing decisions coming . not just a # 3 QB . but do we keep 3 . and can we get 1 of them on our PS . i won’t be surprised if they keep Thomas . he’s just a freak. it took years for Warner . this guy would be off the charts . if it ever clicks for him . maybe he becomes an all pro tight end 1 day 😛 )-line was supposed to be our strength this year . and , of course they’ll need to jell . whenever they all get back on the field . but i think they’ll hold the fort for awhile . I’m more concerned with RB’s missing blocks . if AE doesn’t have the blocking schemes figured out after 3 years . CJ , DJ are screwed already . maybe Goodwin will need to simplify . we can’t risk CP ..also tight end was looking like a real plus for us this year . absent in the passing game so far . and Stanton’e disaster .. he’s not been impressive in games i looking at a defense completely committed to the run . totally unable to cover screens , misdirection ? the middle of the field has been wide open . then i’m seeing all out blitzes . corners . giving receivers a 10 yard cushion . we allow hot receivers to run free. only 2 preseason games . don’t want to be hypercritical . but our backups have pretty much stunk it up . I’m sure they’re gifted athletes . should be competitive . maybe Keim, BA need to start shopping for defensive coaches ?? be ready to pounce after the season .. GO CARDS ! ! !
