Niklas must sit again (and #CardsCamp notes)

Troy Niklas is sidelined again, done in by the same hamstring that put him out of practice at the beginning of camp. It’s another blow for the young tight end, who flashes what the Cardinals want to see on the field. He’s just never on the field, thanks to a broken thumb/bad ankle/hamstrings over the past year-plus.

“He’s the player we liked,” coach Bruce Arians said. “We just have to keep him healthy.”

Can that happen? Niklas is frustrated and I’d guess the team is frustrated. Arians said he isn’t sure how long this will sideline Niklas, and with Jermaine Gresham hopefully playing this week — but still not a lock — the Cards must still think about where they are at tight end.

— Arians is hopeful the hamstring trio of RB Chris Johnson, ILB Sean Weatherspoon and CB Jerraud Powers will all be back later this week (which is running out of days), but all are sitting Wednesday. OL Earl Watford (ankle) is sitting again too.

— WR Michael Floyd (hand) said he is sticking with his rehab protocol but he expressed optimism he could be back for the regular-season opener. Floyd isn’t catching yet, but said he thinks it will be mental hurdles and not physical hurdles that will be the key. Arians too is hopeful Floyd will return. “I wouldn’t be shocked if he was ready,” Arians said.

— Another sign undrafted rookie nose tackle Xavier Williams is going to make this roster — Arians’ comment Wednesday. “We’d be very, very happy if he was our third- or fourth-round draft choice right now.”

— Arians said he is “anxious” to see OLB Shaq Riddick on the field after missing, well, basically almost every practice since he was drafted. It’s Riddick’s potential speed off the edge that has the Cardinals wanting more. Might be hard to get him through to the practice squad — which is another thing to keep in mind with the final 53-man roster.

— Both Logan Thomas and Phillip Sims are expected to play Sunday (and the whole game in Denver, likely). That third QB battle will go through the Denver game, Arians added. Sims may come in before Thomas this week, however, because Arians wants Thomas to get a chance at a two-minute drill.

    15 years ago or more the only players you heard about having Hamstring injuries were mostly older veteran guys that were over 30 years old. We have always had big strong fast players in the league. Time to take a poll on what the fans think:

    a) players not taking stretching and preparation on their own serious enough.

    b) making better $ than those players in the 90’s

    c) softer players. (our society in general has been wussified)

    d) bad luck

    I think the veterans just want to avoid practice and preseason games. That’s fine as long as they know the playbook and have kept themselves in shape. I believe a pulled hammy or ankle sprain is easy to fake and hard to disprove. Of course, this is sure to lead to unemployment for many of the guys on the bubble.

    My lord, is anyone so thoroughly sick of this song at this point they can’t stand it any more???

    ANOTHER Cardinals player who can’t get healthy….ANOTHER hamstring….ANOTHER guy we’ve all had high hopes for / one of the guys we were really counting on….. ANOTHER “we just have to hope he gets healthy soon”….and ANOTHER guy who we don’t know how long he’ll be sidelined for.

    This is becoming like a devout repetition of the rosary around here, for cryin’ out loud.

    I’m looking at this team right now as a ship with leaks all over the damn place, yet in a few weeks, we all have to get on board, hoping this thing will somehow get us across the ocean to the other side. Geez….don’t know ’bout you all, but I’m bringing a life jacket!

    With all these muscle injuries (specifically hamstrings), when will this front office realize they need to stretch these guys before practice?! It’s common freaking sense!

    if they were not so short handed at TE you think they would just go ahead and cut Troy and they still might ,if weatherspoon doesn’t show something soon I would cut him. AS for Watford cant beat out someone sitting on the sideline?

    My vote would be players are bigger, faster , stronger than the 90’s. Bodies are pushed to limits of weight training. The players are explosive.

    I just think under those conditions, guys are going to blow out muscles.
    Much in the same way, race cars are pushed and occasionally blow their engine from the constant stress.

    Some players understand their body and are able to fine tune them without breaking them down

    I wish they would list depth next to the name, or if they are starters or not but it’s better than nothing.

    High hamstring injuries are both painful and hard to heal.

    Cards did good on D-linemen draft picks with Williams and Gunter

    Huge question marks with Weatherspoon and C Johnson. Hard to access w/o any quality games or practices.

    I’m concerned about right tackle. Hard for Watford (never played tackle), suddenly comes in and becomes serviceable. This emphasizes on how poorly Humphreys is doing.

    Stanton needs some quality game time. Not sure on how poorly he is playing vs. on how poorly the 2nd string line has been playing.

    Questions still abound about a 4th CB and ILB, and OLB positions.

    Anyone else notice how the news articles about cards position depth leads to a rash or injuries, mostly hammies. This is a nefarious correlation, please don’t do any more pieces on depths ;0

    I was in Vegas over the weekend an put a hundred on the Cards to win SB50, Don’t care about winning 2200, just want the Cards to do it!

    Carson and the O-Line are the key. When Iupati and Massey get back, the Cards will roll.

    Aloha Darren,
    I noticed there have been a lot of hamstring injuries, I know BA told the guys to stretch before practice but you know athletes, a lot of them wont go through the proper stretching if left to do it on their own? Apparently they need to be forced to stretch during practice?
    I have been teaching Martial arts for 30 years, if I told the students to stretch on their own they would never stretch like they would if I had them go through it with the class.
    Granted the pros should know better but it doesn’t mean they will do it? I have never seen so much hammy injuries like this years preseason run?
    Maybe the cards trainers can chime in on this???
    Just my 2 cents! Only hoping for the best so all the players can be on the field and not on the sidelines!

    I really don’t like the feeling I get with this team right now with the injuries and underachievers. These FA’s are really a downer right now.

    Do we have enough depth to win early until these guys get healthy? Especially Upati and Spoon?

    So very unfortunate for Niklas, I hope Gresham can play and then Niklas’s injury is like an afterthought. I want to see Chris’s debut, Spoon’s debut, and Powers back playing in Oakland! Michael Floyd and seems like most of our team, get healthy!! By the way Darren, who threw the ball that dislocated Floyd’s fingers? Aroldis Chapman?? Sheesh..

    He didn’t dislocate the fingers on the catch. He dislocated them when he hit the ground and the ball/ground caught the fingers wrong.

    How is Jerraud Powers (2wks ago who had oblique problems and this week hamstring issues) and Justin Bethel fight for the starting corner position opposite of Patrick Peterson? Jerraud Powers has not played in any preseason games or practices to fight?
    Justin Bethel has been a shut Down corner in all of the preseason games like holding Jeremy Maclin to 1 catch and 12 yards TOTAL. Justin Bethel won the battle because there is no fight….COME ON!

    I’m no doctor, but recall vaguely, a 10+ year old report ID’ing excess alcohol consumption (beer?) as a factor in causing muscle pulls/hamstring tears.

    You forgot to include “all of the above” and “Other” which would include restriction/prescribed practice as outlined by the CBA.
    These days coaches are handcuffed by the restrictions outlined in the CBA regarding when players can be at the facility, length of practices, numbers of padded practices, etc., which, I believe has “wussified” the preseason training process and sent a message to players that they should be treated like movie stars rather than soldiers. It’s time for the league and players alike to revisit the CBA and make some changes, perhaps this time armed with data on the frequency and serious nature of injuries arising since the CBA was ratified. I put this one on the players for the most part (and I am a huge player advocate!), as they are ultimately responsible for the maintenance of their person!
    At the same time, the really elite players understand that their body is the instrument of their success and take care of it twelve months a year, cross training and employing a chef so that they can eat healthy, etc. Perhaps these things need to be highlighted in the rookie orientation/symposium so that youngsters just leaving college can learn the correlation to an improved performance when giving up junk food and McDonalds and preparing properly.

    you are right on, the CBA has all but handcuffed the coaches and their time they can spend with players.
    all contact is now scripted down to the minute, off season, OTA’s, Training Camp and regular season. Time limits across the board…

    the “padded” practice, can only be for a set time, if the team rolls out the trainers and takes 30 minutes of team streching, that is 30 minutes BA and staff can not practice / coach up the players.

    Teachers take classes to stay current, on their own time, Fire and Police keep in shape for their job, on their own time, Doctors are receiving training on new procedures, on their own time…
    Enough said, if you are a professional player, then do your job !

    You are partially correct about professionals being responsible for staying current. “on their own time” however, CEUs in professions such as teaching, medicine, healthcare, insurance, real estate, police and fire, law and others are required for licensure/certification/re-certification and many professional industries offer accredited workshops/symposiums or reimburse coursework, to assist in these requirements, i.e. licensure is directly linked to continuing education. And, some employers even give “Professional Leave” as they feel it is an investment in their industry and is good for everybody!
    Conditioning is an important part of any sports, and it would seem, the lack thereof, is obvious. I agree these are well-paid adult professionals who should be responsible for the maintenance of their person, but it also is a matter of functioning within a structure that all thirty-two teams have, and sometimes it’s a matter of allocating time efficiently and being open to trying alternatives.
    I still believe it’s time for players/owners/and the NFL front office to revisit the CBA and perhaps make some adjustments in the name of “Player Safety”.

    Something is wrong when this many of your players have injuries…cut the trainers not the players !!!

    The main reason is money. There’s so much money in the game now, that everyone is working their tail off constantly. When you’re on the very end of the bell curve, a tiny dropoff in your ability can be the difference between making the team or not making it, or being a 4th receiver making a relative pittance vs. a #1 guy making millions. So with so much at stake, everyone is training harder, pushing their bodies to the limits.

    I think it has very little to do with the CBA limiting practices or guys not doing enough on their own (these guys aren’t stupid; many of them have personal trainers, chefs, etc.), or players being softer (again, with the money at stake, no one wants to be on the sidelines — just means their next contract suffers).

    Injuries are up in all sports. Baseball — which involves almost no contact at all, and running hard for about 90 feet once every 40 minutes or so, and occasionally when a ball is hit to you — has a lot of injuries too… especially hammies.

    Good Lord!

    The Bidwill’s are going to have to go in Partners with a Sports Medicine group, and Build their NFL-level quality facility on the property Next Door to the site (one at the Univ of Phx Stadium and one at the Tempe facility) and have the players arrive three hours early for practice there at the Rehab facility for progressive massages, work-outs, treatments and medications (legal) as needed. Then shuttle them onto the field so they don’t trip or twist their ankle.

    That way they’d be fully warmed and taped and ready for on-field practice.

    The idiotic train of injuries is mind-numbing!!

    The Other Main Problem too many of us are over looking is that OTS’s, Mini-Camps and Training Camp is in the heart of the Desert. The atmosphere during Summer in the Desert is pretty darn radical for the physical Rigors you gotta work through as an NFL player.

    This is a Winter sport, but we’re preparing during the heat of summer in an atmosphere that killed many Pioneers more than a Century ago.
