Byron Leftwich coaching with Cardinals

Posted by Darren Urban on May 6, 2016 – 3:17 pm

Former NFL quarterback Byron Leftwich is the latest ex-player Bruce Arians has brought in as a coaching intern. Leftwich, who played for the Jaguars, Falcons, Buccaneers and Steelers during his nine seasons — including working with Arians in Pittsburgh — was helping quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens with Jake Coker and Stephen Rivers Friday during rookie minicamp. He also has been out working with the regular roster during the week.

(The Cardinals also have former NFL cornerback Willie Williams working with them.)

“I love the game,” Leftwich said. “This is just the next transition from player to coach and (Arians) allowed me to come down and be a part of it. I’ll take advantage of it, and we’ll see.”

Leftwich will be with the team throughout the offseason and through training camp.

“After that, we’ll see,” Arians said. “Hopefully I can keep him all year. I think he’s got a great, bright future in coaching.”

Leftwich said Arians didn’t really reach out to him to coach since the two talk frequently anyway.

“There’s no reaching out — we’re always in touch,” Leftwich said with a chuckle. “Opportunity came about.”

The Buddha BA…he won’t be running sprints with the guys, but he is highly skilled at creating serious loyalty with his crew…as I read it. He gives men an opportunity to prove themselves. He knows what it’s like having been there. Like Boetcher…go out there and prove me wrong… What can create better work ethic? …a fantastic leader..!

Lol, “there’s no reaching out”, classic. Watched the rookie reels, wow. Gotta believe Coker will be around for pre-season…

One questiuon: Rashad was what some call our Center Fielder, last line of defense. Who is that guy now? Rotate? Branch? Rashad had great anticipation, but not fast enuff. Thats been solved at least, these guys have speed to burn…

welcome to the Big Red coaching staff B. Leftwich. Not a bad thing to have another set of eyes on the two young QB’s in camp.

PS: Evan Boehm looks light on his feet, athletic and stout (no gut either)…nice…

Good to have Big Byron aboard the staff—BA said he hopes to keep him long-term if he can.

Wonder what Byron can do with Jake Coker—it’s amazing how under the radar he has been when one considers the following:

    1. 14-0 this season as a starter (Bama lost the one game he did not start).
    2. Was voted team captain.
    3. Has NFL size, arm and skill set, plus deceiving escape ability.
    4. In the SEC Championship Game versus Florida, the best defense in the USA, he passed for 18/26 (69.2%), 204 yards, 2 TDs, 0 ints. in a 29-15 W.
    5. In the Cotton Bowl, National Semifinal Game versusBig Ten Champs Michigan St. he passed for 25/30 (83.2%), 286 yards, 2 TDs, 0 ints in a 38-0 W.
    6. At U of P in the NCAACG vs. #1 Clemson, he passed for 16/25 (64%), 335 yards, 2 TD, 0 ints in a 45-40 W.
    7. Biggest 3 Games of the Year he combined for 59/81 (72.8%), 825 yards, 6 TDs 0 ints. helping to win the SEC Championship and NCAA Championship.

Aside from Carson Wentz, Coker may be the best QB fit in BA’s offense in this past draft and they didn’t even have to draft him. Amazing.

    Early 53 Projection:

    QB (3): Palmer, Stanton, Coker
RB (4): D. Johnson, C. Johnson; Ellington; Williams
TE (4): Fells, Gresham, Momah, G. Christian
OL (8): Veldheer, Iupati, Shipley, Mathis, Humphries, Watford, Boehm, Toner
WR (5): Fitzgerald, Floyd, John Brown, Nelson, Jaron Brown

    NT (2) Peters, Bryant
DE (5): Gunter, Campbell, Nkemdiche, Rucker, Mauro
LB (8): Golden, Minter, Bucannon, Jones, Freeney, Okpalauga, Fua, Riddick,

PS (10): RB-Baker, TE Valles, G McClain, T/G DeBord, T Wetzel, WR Shipley, NT X. Williams, LB Gabe Martin, OLB Wagenmann, CB Brooks.

Note: Cards like to stash backups on the PS at G,T and ILB. Saves roster spots. They could perhaps do that with QB Coker, if they clear him through waivers. But I think he will play well enough that they won’t want to risk waiving him.

    Bubble List:

QB Barkley, RB Taylor, TE Niklas, T Crisp, C Boggs, WR/CB Golden, DE Stinson, OLB K. Martin, OLB Okafor, CB Jackson, CB/S Prater, S Clemons, P Butler, LS Dillon.

What do you make of the Lamar Woodley comments?

    RE: Woodley comments

Meh. Haven’t heard it from anyone else, and they had a pretty good defense all season before that last game. Plus, Woodley is frustrated.

I seem to recall there have been a few pretty good Qb’s outta ‘Bama..
Even tho my blood runs Big Orange..
I gotta give it up to Bart Starr, Broadway Joe Namath and a dude called Snake ,Ken Stabler…

jtdg… interesting that I was just indicating how well Boetcher was doing with the faith BA had in him…. Woodley sounds like sour grapes…even criticizing his Raiders coach. Frustrated…as Darren indicates, and choosing to vent in the media, not a good tact. I wish this stuff would be addressed in the office. A bit naive to think he has better strategy for things. This is a team sport; not everyone will be thrilled all the time…
