Jenkins is Keim’s CB camp signing

So, with training camp starting in a little more than a week, the Cardinals have signed a veteran cornerback. (With Steve Keim, did you expect anything else?) Mike Jenkins, with whom the Cardinals flirted before as a free agent back in 2014, is the one now in the defensive back mix.

You knew they would get a vet. Early in offseason there were talks with Bengals vet Leon Hall (who is still unsigned) and Jerraud Powers (who eventually signed with Baltimore). Jenkins has spent the last two years in Tampa, where he signed after nothing materialized with the Cards two years ago. At the time, the Cardinals instead signed Antonio Cromartie (who made the Pro Bowl.)

Jenkins joins a crowded secondary. There is no set starter across from Patrick Peterson. Justin Bethel has a slight edge, and Jenkins — who has started just five games the past two years in his 15 appearances — has a chance to get in the lineup. But he isn’t a lock to win a spot necessarily, either. Third-round pick Brandon Williams will join Peterson and Bethel on the roster. Draft pick Harlan Miller has a chance. Former undrafted corner Cariel Brooks has a chance. There are also a couple of guys who have been around — Asa Jackson and Shaun Prater — who have had an offseason to show themselves.

(Adam Schefter is reporting the Cardinals are scheduled to bring in vet CB Chris Culliver for a visit too. Keim confirmed the visit.)

However it plays out, Keim has made sure there is that veteran security blanket heading into camp. Maybe the Cardinals already in place will show it was unnecessary. But usually, that vet who signs now not only ends up necessary but an integral part of the upcoming season.

Darren, is Elie Bouka still in the mix? I am interested as he is from the University of Calgary, my alma mater. Thanks!

    RE: Bouka

Everyone is in the mix, but again, he is an undrafted player coming off a serious injury.

Good point. These signings, late in career, often coming off injury, often someone we wanted earlier, have been $$.. Any word on his health currently? I guess local radio will get interviews set up, huh.

Its coming fast now, lot o mo off that Amazon marathon. So serendipitous that it ended with a bitter loss…

    #SB51 or nothing at all

In ‘Keim’ we Trust, that he will give BA the Players he needs and will Cut those who Do Not follow the Simplest of Rules.

(You do see that sign, of things to come, in front of that parking spot?)

Jenkins is a free agent reach, but you know how SK churns that roster.

Can’t hurt. If we needed help anywhere, it was at CB.

And Dwight Freeney is still available…..still out there…..unless there is something we don’t know ( which seems unlikely ), I really am surprised the Bengals didn’t sign him. Every day he remains un-signed, my wonder grows as to whether he might just be waiting on the Cardinals to come calling.

The cards just went through camp. They had two fields going , so everyone had a chance to show their skills.

Probably no one has a better chance to show skills with no pads as do the receivers and defensive backs.

After watching what we had, Keim signs Jenkins and is now (reportedly) looking at Culliver.

    Says a lot to me.

Good pickup potentially! I live in Dallas and the brotha was on his way to something potentially special until injuries kicked in every now and then. I hope he can stay healthy because if he can, the #2 spot is his! Good size, pretty good ball skills, tackling wasn’t great in Dallas, but everything you want in a corner minus the injuries and maybe the inconsistent tackling.

2009 was a LONG time ago in NFL years! I’m thinking Keim is looking more for someone to challenge the talent we have more than a legit roster spot.
One of our biggest assets last season was our strong veteran core and it was these old soldiers who lifted us up and carried us to victory while the youngsters watched on having spent themselves early. We need Dwight Freeney back so he can continue to feed our young talent in training camp! If this is to be our year,we need to borrow a page from John Elway and pull out all the stops. Perhaps if we play smart we can preserve our health so we will still be fit enough to go the distance.
