Broken hand for Jenkins and B.A. update

Posted by Darren Urban on July 30, 2016 – 12:49 pm

The injury bug didn’t take long to find the Cardinals in camp. Veteran cornerback Mike Jenkins, signed in part because Justin Bethel was going to miss time with a linger foot injury and who is on the PUP list, broke a bone in his hand Friday and is out indefinitely for now.

Arians also revealed that the ankle sprain of rookie defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche is of the high variety, meaning Nkemdiche will be out at least a couple of weeks.

— DT Red Bryant (Achilles soreness) and TE Jermaine Gresham (hamstring tightness) also aren’t expected to practice today.

— Arians said cornerback Brandon Williams “had a hell of a day” in his first practice. “He got beat by Smoke (Brown for a TD) but he was there, just turned the wrong way and got off balance. But he broke up some good balls. Nice thing was after the touchdown he came back and competed his ass off. Some guys would go in the tank.”

— Quarterback Matt Barkley has made steady improvement, Arians said, but there are things like seeing hots and sights that aren’t good enough. “As much as he’s grown, he’s still not making the progress I’d like to see him make,” Arians said. (An aside: It wouldn’t be a shock to see the Cards carry two QBs on the active roster either.)

— At one point in the first practice, QB Carson Palmer got partially rolled from behind by offensive tackle Jared Veldheer. Arians admitted he held his breath after that play, and a couple others. “There was a lot of ‘phew’ yesterday,” Arians said.

Interesting comments on Matt Barkley, doesn’t sound good.

Well, this is NOT an I-told-ya-so but I will say I just am not surprised to hear that Barkley is not really impressing. I continue to feel he just has no place on this team – especially if they are only going to carry 2 QB’s on the roster. And regardless, I just don’t think he is good enough to be an NFL QB.

I almost screamed just HEARING that Palmer got rolled up on. Man, could anything be worse than losing your QB the first day of camp because one of your own guys rolled up on him???

Sorry to hear about Jenkins and even more concerned about Nkemdiche having a high ankle sprain. Not a tragedy but you don’t want first year guys starting camp by sitting out a few weeks. This time is so important to them.

Speaking of injuries, did people see the news about Cooper being carried off the field during practice with the Pats? Geez….that poor guy. He just can’t get a break ( no pun intended ). Hate to say it but….better them than us.

We gave up a 7th round pick for barkley and after a year he can’t make the right reads. What a waste.

Barkley was still a trade up from two years ago no matter how you look at it.

We all know that injuries are a part of football, but how does a DT injure himself at QB school? We really need a few of our rookies to step up this year. Boehm our center, Humphries our RT I consider a rookie since he was inactive ever game last year, Williams at CB, and of course Robert N. at DT. I hope Robert is in shape because we really need him to get reps this preseason.

    Go Cards!

Do you give us any chance of resigning Dwight Freeney? I really want him back this season. I was thinking or hoping he just did not want to go thru camp and would sign before week one. Read some articles where Falcons, Cowboys, and Bengals could be interested especially Falcons, but Falcons are much less likely to challenge for Super Bowl than our Cardinals.

    Go Cards!

    RE: Freeney

Any chance? Sure. Right now, without any injuries? Probably not. Chandler Jones took his spot. And this team is trying to find young pass rushers for the future. If Jones is here now, even if he doesn’t re-sign, that’s what they need in 2016. And Freeney doesn’t help down the road. So again, barring injury, not sure it makes sense.

SO good to hear B. Williams is doing well. He may very well be the steal of the draft:)

Brandon is starting to get exciting. I like the new safety too.

    Darren –

It caught my attention a bit to hear you say, in reference to Jones, even if he doesn’t re-sign. Man, do you really think that could happen?? I’ve been thinking all along, they didn’t just trade a 2nd round pick to “rent” a player for one season, they would absolutely be planning on him being here for the future. Maybe not??

    RE: Jones

We’ll see. They always could franchise him, but long term it’s going to come down to money, the cap and how it all fits. The downside to collecting a bunch of talented vets is eventually, you can’t pay them all.
