No more PUP but still no Smoke, Nkemdiche

Posted by Darren Urban on August 16, 2016 – 12:30 pm

The Cardinals are prepping for their night practice against the Chargers tonight and Bruce Arians delivered a bunch of injury updates, not the least of which the fact there are no more players on the physically unable to perform list. S Tyrann Mathieu, DT Frostee Rucker and CB Justin Bethel have all been put on the active roster, and while they will not practice yet — Arians said, as he did before, that they will only take part in walkthroughs and get mental reps — it’s a start.

Arians wouldn’t even say if all or some will be available Week 1 against the Patriots, although he did say Mathieu was “close.” They have to get to individual work before they even graduate to team practice.

— WR John “Smokey” Brown still has yet to be cleared after his concussion. At this point, Arians acknowledges it is a concern. The Cardinals will be smart about it, and Arians said Brown will likely sit out a couple extra days after he’s cleared just to be safe. Besides, Arians said, Brown will have to work his way back into shape anyway since he has been out so long.

— The hope is that rookie DT Robert Nkemdiche (ankle) will return to practice next week, Arians said.

Nkemdiche needs the reps, will set him back for the first Qrt of the season.

Darren, if you get to downtown, I recommend The Crack Shack, good chicken.

Mostly great news! I think we will be fine with Brown ( and, no, there is NO need to rush him back ) if we have Nkemdiche back next week, that will be OK as well. We have depth on the D-line and he can work his way in. Hey, our first round pick played sporadically for half the season last year, then when we REALLY needed him, he was more than ready to step up to a bigger role. This is not a tragedy.

Would love to see the Honey Badger in the line-up for week one. That building is gonna be electric that night, even more so if he is on the field.

With staying healthy as a primary goal, this team is in very good shape right now.

Scott…..Humphries was our first round pick last year, #24 overall, and I think he was inactive all of last year. Maybe you were thinking of Jonathan Cooper, another first round pick I think in 2013 who played a bit last year but never seemed to recover from his broken leg in his first training camp.

Scott H- fyi, Our first round pick last year was DJ Humphries, and he wasn’t active for a single game. Were you perhaps referring to Markus Golden (Rd 2), or David Johnson (Rd 3)?

    Johnny / Mikey –

My bad. That was just careless on my part. The person I was referring to was DJ who was obviously NOT drafted in the first round last year ( and I know that ).

Good to know you all are paying attention! 🙂

    SCOTT H-

You need not worry about All-Pro FS/CB Tyrann Mathieu , he is on pace to most definitely play come week 1 !!! Arians has said they will definitely get him on the field by the 3rd pre-season game to knock the rust off and get some live reps in the 3rd n 4th pre-season games!!!! Mathieu is going to be an absolute monster this season , last year Pro Football Focus ranked him #1 at his position and I think he is both the best slot CB & best Free Safety in the NFL Today , his versatility is unmatched & when you pair Mathieu up with 6″1/210pd FS Tyvon Branch (also can play CB, SCB, and SS) in Arizona’s Nickel & Dime defense ( which we are in roughly 70% of the time if not more) w/ Branch’s Elite Speed running a 4.25 40 time & his Excellent coverage skills paired up with Mathieu will give AZ unmatched speed & pass coverage ability from both Safety positions & then with AZ having the best #1 cover CB in the NFL in 5X Pro-Bowler/3X All-Pro Patrick Peterson w/ much improved 3X Pro Bowler 6″1/205pd CB Justin Bethel w/ his elite 4.39 speed & much improved coverage ability ( Bethel’s 49.1% allowed completion percentage on passes throw his way was 4th best/lowest of all 118 CBs ranked & he ranked 32nd in pass coverage via Pro Football Focus of 118 ranked CBs n had 2INTs/10 passes defensed in just 7 starts in his very 1st season starting at CB, He will be much better in year 2 starting) & we also have 6″1/203pd CB Brandon Williams with his length 33in long arms n elite 4.32 40 speed who I don’t think will start this season ( by next year he will definitely be the starting #2CB) But I do think BA will rotate him in behind Bethel to break him in slowly, I think Williams is going to develop into an Elite CB as our #2 Corner, his potential is sky high…… AZ is LOADED at the CB Position & at Safety as we also have two excellent Strong Safety’s in 6ft/220pd SS Tony Jefferson who will start in our 3-4 base defense who excels vs the run & is a good pass coverage safety & rotational 5″11/225pd extremely hard hitting SS DJ Swearinger!!!

With Arizona’s Elite Front-7 sporting a vastly improved Elite pass rush Arizona is going to have the best pass defense in the NFL I believe but definitely will rank in the top 3 pass defenses & both Patrick Peterson n Tyrann Mathieu are going to be even better now that they don’t have to cover all day long thanks to the upgraded pass rush which is a extremely scary thought being how are both arguably the best players at their positions in the NFL!!!!!

I can NOT wait to see DT/DE Robert Nkimdiche play in game 3. Arizona got an absolute STEAL in Nkimdiche , Personally I thought pre-draft he was the best DE/DT in the entire draft but definitely would of been a top 5 or top 10 pick if not for the incident at the Hotel!!!!

At 6″4/300pds with 34in long arms, elite athleticism n quick twitch movement able to move like a 4-3 DE/3-4 OLB with elite speed for a DT running like a 4-3DE with 4.79-4.81 speed, elite strength/power, excellent lateral quickness and an arsenal of pass rush moves improving greatly as a pass rusher his JR season (even though Ole Miss mis-used him a TON as a run stopper to take on multiple blockers n plug holes, in AZ esp as a rookie he is going to mostly just pass rush) doubling his QB pressures from the 2014 season putting up 36 QB pressures which insane for a DT n 3.5 sacks…. As a rookie playing as a 5 tech 3-4 DE as well as able to lineup over the Center n play the 0 tech n in our 4-3 looks playing a 3 tech 4-3 DT with as much as AZ Blitz’s I think he is going to be a freaking monster!!!!! As a rookie I think Nkimdiche will put up 5.5-8.0 sacks n 30-35 QB pressures as a rookie especially with the players he has around him,,,,,,,,

Across from Nkimdiche is one of the top 3 best 3-4 DEs in premier Pro-Bowl DE/DT 6″8 Calais Campbell Is in for A MONSTER YEAR this season. Teams ALWAYS Double-Team Calais 95% of the time but with the addition of Elite 3-4 OLB/DE in 6″5/260pd (35.5in long arms) Pro-Bowler Chandler Jones who is one of the best rushers n the NFL so Campbell will get a ton of 1 on 1 from now 95% of the time & he will n can destroy any OG in the NFL , Last time he had an Elite pass rusher behind him in Pro-Bowler John Abraham, Campbell had 9.0 sacks in 2013 with Pro Bowler Chandler Jones now behind coming off the edge Campbell will have NO PROBLEM putting up 9-10+ sacks this season!!!!!

AZ will have a few other excellent pass rushing D-Linemen starting with having excellent Nose-Tackle/DT in 6″3/305pd Corey Peters who excels rushing the passer & getting pressure, collapsing and pushing the pocket. Peters elite strength & quickness give Centers a ton of problems!!!! With Peter’s back that means 2nd year 3-4 DE/DT 6″5/305pd Rodney Gunter ( who filled in at NT for Peters n 2015 & was one of the best in the NFL as a rookie ranking 17th of 82 ranked NT/DT’s via Pro Football Focus) can go back to his natural position as a Pass-Rushing 3-4DE where he can be outright dominant with his Excellent Athleticism & Elite 4.81 speed w/ a very fast 1st step, elite strength/power.I expect Gunter to have 6-8 sacks at DE !!!! AZ will also have a 100% healthy rotational 3-4 DE 6″3/295pd Frostee Rucker who healthy is an excellent pass rusher, he played hurt all last year but was healthy n 2014 n in ONLY 505 Snaps had 5.5 sacks n 35 QB pressures…. Now Healthy again he will only play probably 550-700 snaps n healthy he should easily have 5.5-7.5 sacks!!!!! AZ also has Excellent pure run stopping Defensive Linemen in 6″5 DE Ed Stinson, 6″6 excellent very versatile DE Josh Mauro, DE/DT/NT 6″4/310PD Red Bryant and 6″3/315pd NT/DT Xavier Williams who is excellent versus the run though he might rotate in behind Corey Peters this year though as Williams is a excellent pass rusher n can push the pocket/collapse the pocket n get to the QB, Tenacious pass rusher who fights hard to get to quarterback n goes 200MPH playing thru the whistle!!!!!

Aside from having an Elite D-Line, AZ also has a massively upgraded Elite outside pass rush off the edge starting w/ 6″5/265PD Chandler Jones who has elite speed/length/power off the edge & is a 11-12++ sack per season pass rusher & is one of the top 5 best edge rushers in the NFL!!!! Behind Nkimdiche coming off the edge is 6″3/265pd EXCELLENT pass rushing OLB/DE Markus Golden who plays extremely hard with an Elite Motor with Elite power/strength n excellent speed, also sets a hard edge & excels stopping the run. As a rookie Golden was the highest ranked rookie OLB ranking 17th of 49 OLBs ranked via Pro Football Focus who credited him with 7.0 Sacks n 45 QB Pressures which was the most among all rookie pass rushers n had 19 QB Hits!!! Golden is a monster all motor player, reminds me a ton of a young OLB Trent Cole, Golden will never be an elite #1 OLB but I think he can develop into the best elite #2 caliber OLB in the NFL good for 8-11 sacks per season. Golden is going to be a monster this season now that he fully understands his role in the defense n is broken in after a excellent rookie season, I think he will have 9-10 sacks this year. 6″5/260pd excellent OLB Alex Okafor is a beast when healthy and is now 100% healthy after playing with a torn calf muscle from week 2 on which is why he only had 3.5 sacks/35 QB pressures last season despite having 2 sacks in week 1 when he was still healthy.. Now healthy again he can be a monster, in 2014 he put up 8.5 sacks in just 12 games, as a rotational OLB I think he will have 7-8 sacks due to reps but if he were to start he can be a 10 sack guy healthy. AZ has excellent young backup/rotational OLBs who can fly off the edge in 6″6 Kareem Martin (35.5in long arms) w/ his 4.67 speed and he has gotten much, much better since making the switch to OLB & 6″6/255pd Shaq Riddick w/ his elite athleticism n elite 4.58 speed can fly off the edge, after being inactive all last year he will get to actually play… He needs to develop but eventually I think Riddick can be very very good!!!!! AZ is absolutely loaded and is going to have an Elite pass rush this season.

DJ was a first round pick last year. David Johnson was a third round pick. Just to clarify. I assume you are referring to David Johnson. 🙂

I know this cannot be true, but as I continue to read and hear about Nkemdiche, something flashed JCooper’s face in front of me and all the misfortune for him…No way can this happen to this rookie….Glad we have Jones and a couple others in there to shake things up and create havoc for D-team…later
